TOPIC: A Warm Fire Pit

Re:A Warm Fire Pit 1 Year, 5 Months ago
I'm at home sitting outside in the heat. Our power is out so I'm typing this on my phone.
You'll get some Reaper paints with the learn to paint sets, should you decide to get one or more of them.
For the majority of painting I'd recommend 3 shades. Background/base tone, mid tone and at least one highlight.
This gives the depth of 3D and is the difference in having the mini come to life and really "pop" and looking more 2D and lifeless.
I'm an amateur by definition though so what I share with others should be taken with a 'grain of salt' (apply what you think best).
I bought at least 3 learn to paint sets and have found them extremely educational.
I got a few duplicate colors (like ruddy brown, antique gold, sealer, primer, etc.) but nothing that isn't commonly or won't get used. They start with basic techniques and advanced sets have advanced techniques (like non-metallic metallics - using non-metallic paints to simulate a metallic finish.
If you are interested I have staged pictures of each miniature I've painted on my Facebook page (see my signature). Each photo album with the name of a miniature is filled with pictures showing how I painted each one. I specifically made the page for others to see how easy it really is to paint miniatures. Click on photos then slbums for a listing. i also have a few other albums for group pics, completed minis, showcase pics, Dave's vintage box set, the Bones I've ordered, etc.
Please enjoy

I would suggest a vist toyou local art supply shoppe. They will have some bottles of acrylics there that are every bit the equal of the hobby shop paint at a very good price. I use a combination of vallejo, gw and golden paints. The art supply shop can also provide you with interference paints. A counter-metalic that appears when the model receives direct light.

I also have some of the toll paints that i use for certain of my armies but you have to be a bit cautious as the pigments in those bottles as not as finely ground and may clump up on you.

Just try a variety of paints and you will find your favourites.

Thanks Tex, I think I will invest in a couple of the learn to paint kits and I will look into your page. Sorry to hear about your power.

galahad, you're the second person who has mentioned how fine granular pigments are affecting a paint's use for minis. I had heard that some paints actually use liquid pigments, but I had not researched it yet. None of the packaging I have looked at really says anything about pigment type or quality, so I am thinking it is something I either find out the hard way or consult with someone who has used it to see if they can provide insight.

Time to let this thread head back in the right direction! Awesome use of LEDs for cool mini special effects!

My players rue the day I bought "Dragon Mountain". Ever since they give every creature a bit more respect. You never know when the GM will decide that this group is crafty...

As promised, a longer, better video link of John's Warm Fire Pit!
(I used a few MP3's from Plate Mail Games to replace the obnoxious fan noise)
Enjoy!

And if you like the background MP3's in the video link (above) I got them from the Kickstarter from Plate Mail Games.
Each MP3 is 10 minutes long and you can loop it while running a group through an area.
If you missed the KS or just want a couple he's selling the ones he's already given up to backers to download (for very reasonable price avg $1.50/MP3)

PS. I used excerpts from Daytime Graveyard, Nighttime Graveyard & Dwarven City (respectively)

Sorry Daniel can't reply to posts right now. He is camped out by the mail box mumbling something about new toys, crypts, and fire pits.

PS: They look wonderful, I can't wait. :-)

(Yes I realize I am double posting, but I just have to)

******OMG******

My wife just handed me a box. Seems they came yesterday while I was out and she forgot to tell me. <dafrca dances a happy dance>

The fire pits are wonderful and the crypts, the crypts are 100 times better than the picture shows. They look oh so much better in person.

If you are thinking of buying some of keeblerorc's creatures, crypts, or a fire pit or more but are unsure, let me push you the rest of the way. They are great and will fit into my DF collection very well. Do it. You will not be sorry.
