If I didn't already have a huge collection of metal miniatures and I was just starting out, this is how I'd build my "plastic" gaming collection.

I would purchase Reapers "bones" unpainted miniatures. Check out miniature giant, they are the cheapest on the web for reaper miniatures!

I would also youtube search for DM's Craft (GM Scotty). He can show you lots of ways to take super cheap party toys and make them into playable miniatures for your games.

I might also buy so prepainted D&D minis off of ebay but they can be much more expensive than these two sources.

As for preparing and painting the miniatures. I would probobly base each miniature using a washers from the hardware store, this would give each a standard round base with a fair amount of weight.
As for painting I would give each a base coat and then "dip them" (check youtube for tutorials to do this cheaply). Dipping can save a tremendous amount of time and cover up painting mistakes.

I want to add this dude posted a blog on how he got mini's for under a $1 each, it might be worth while to look at. cheapfantasyminis.blogspot.com/

Also mega miniatures will be closing its store in 20 days! They have cheap metal dungeon dressings and miniatures ~$2 each

Did you pledge for the MYTH KS? $100 for 150+ fantasy miniatures.

Maybe network on the Reaper and MYTH forums, or find a local painting group. Miniature painters often have more mini's than they can paint, and maybe you can get a good offer for some "no longer loved" miniatures. I've already posted about the Mage Knight mini's I can part with (as part of a boardgame trade, or $150 - $250 for a Warhammer Fantasy 5th edition, or a boxful of Crucible metal mini's, preferably SF Bay Area).

If you like Warcraft, also hunt for the OOP Warcraft Boardgame and expansion. Tons of plastic mini's. White Wolf made a D&D 3E book that had stats for them! Partial sets of HeroQuest and Battle Masters are good too, as are the WizKids Artifact and Traps sets.

If you don't want to paint, GOBLIN Miniatures KS has a painting service as part of their KS. Amazon has Dungeon Command, and eBay the D&D Miniatures lots.

Hello Swcorwyn,

Well Hello to Everybody else in the room as well.

I think you might want to define what type of minis you want to get started with so as to starts building up your dungeon inhabiting hoards. A lot of miniature gamers I have talked to over the years have had the same need to build up a stockpile and never really focused on what they needed first.
As an example...
An Orc based dungeon typically has subservient Goblins as workers, maybe some Trolls, Bugbears or Ogres as support troops and the whole bunch might need to keep the local Dragon feed to keep from being eaten my the Giant Wyrm.
10-20 Goblins
10-20 Orcs
2-5 Trolls
4-8 Bugbears
2-5 Ogres
1 Dragon
throw in some wandering monsters...Etc...

Ebay is an awesome place to find cheap minis.... do some search's that you limit the amount you want to spend.

If your doing a Drow dungeon series then do a bit of research as to what fits with Drow...and the collecting never ends.

The Basic point is figure out your overall theme, make a list and stick to it and you'll be amazed how fast you can stock a dungeon.

Hope this helps as it took me years to figure it out myself.

I have a set of the Ral Partha Forgotten Realms Heroes pewter figs. Missing one figure I think its Robyn or Alias. Also I attempted to paint Drizzt and Wulfgar. Not sure what these might sell for nowadays.

Noble Knight is also a possible source for OOP miniatures.

I picked up the old Thunderbolt Mountain swan ship -- now I just have to acquire enough skill to paint it!

Instant mini collection, just add large amounts of cash:

www.ebay.com/itm/D-D-miniatures-dungeons-and-dragons-lot-of-1491-/181137992571?pt=Games_US&hash=item2a2caa6b7b

i suspect this will be well over $1,000 before all is said and done, still big lots are the way to go in terms of keeping cost down

And keep in mind that at $1400 this would still be less than $1 each mini. Not bad if you could afford to do it.

There is a new KS going on that could be a great way to get some minis.
www.kickstarter.com/projects/monstertome/goblin-miniatures
At 10k Goblins and 4 others are available including Tavern Folk.
At 15k they get painted for free and an extra tube.
Thats $1.64 per painted mini at the $84 pledge.

The torches and pitchforks are coming out on the latest shipping delay update for Reaper's KS. So, if it gets to the point of backers demanding refunds, see if you can contact Reaper (through the KS Contact Me link) now to see if you can "buy out" a backer's pledge!

@Stephan: Have you seen the reaction? Hope it doesn't happen with the DF KS, but mebbe plan an explanation of how shipment works and what delays production in China can have.

I don't understand why people get so upset over the shipping delays. Reaper has done a good job of keeping people informed. While the information might not always be what people wanted to hear, they've been as forthcoming as I think they can be. Over the years they've had a great customer service reputation, and I feel they are doing the best they can. So many gaming KS have had delays, I feel many are starting to learn and are being more realistic in their published dates, this is still "new" to many of these (both established companies and startups). Normally we'd never even see their plans at the early stages that most KS are launched.
