Now that the KS is over, I need Minis. 1 Year, 4 Months ago
So now that I am going to have an awesome dungeon, I need minis to put in them. Anyone have a source to inexpensive minis? Mostly looking for basic goons (skeletons, goblins, orcs) But hero minis would be good too.

Still kicking myself for missing the Bones KS. Especially since my friend ordered and is waiting for his stuff.

Thanks!

well, from what ive seen prepainted minis tend to cost 3 or 4 dollars each. reaper legendary encounters has a good mix of orcs and skeletons, with groups of archers, spears, or swords, and mixed groups of goblins or kobolds.

pathfinder has a goblins set due out in june, which despite being random boosters, looks like it will have a great mix of goblins. and the pathfinder goblins look awesome.

aside from that, the out of production 'heroes and monsters' set for pathfinders battles has a lot of good stuff in it, but getting a good deal on those random boosters means paying more for a larger quantity. most of the good cannon-fodder singles are simply out of stock as well.

I didn't miss the Bones KS, I ignored it thinking 'WTF will I ever do with 300 minis'? Now I'm kicking myself... :)

I don't have many minis, but I think I have a solid base to use with my DF. I acquired them through buying the D&D games like Castle Ravenloft, Wrath of Ashardalon, and all 5 Dungeon Command sets. Descent is probably a good one to pick up too (though I don't have it yet). All the minis in the games above save Dungeon Command come unpainted.

Well, I am gonna be assuming you don't mind assembling and painting your minis -- it's already been pointed out, other than eBaying old pre-painted DDM figures or getting the Reaper Legendary Encounters figs, there isn't much in the way of pre-painted stuff that you'll be able to get. Of course, there are high-quality DF skeletons and orcs out there, too. ;) But that's all I know for pre-painted. (did those Pathfinder pre-painted minis ever get off the ground?)

GW isn't known for bargains, but this is one of the better deals around: $25 for 10 skeleton warriors, that's $2.50 a mini, and you can create a ton of variety in how you put them togtether. The "assembly required" feature here is really a bonus, IMO, because not only is it easy to Zap-a-Gap these guys together (the plastic is so light they take to glue almost immediately, unlike with some metals that require bracing and support and pinning etc.) but you can assemble them in different poses, with different weapons, different armor... it is really pretty cool. Drop $50, get 20 skeletons, and you can have it so no two are identical. That's awesome.

www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?prodId=prod1050046

For the record, the GW orcs are a similar deal, 10 for $30, but I happen to think their orcs are too cartoonish. Here they are if you want 'em:
www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?prodId=prod900162a

Creeping up the cost scale, Reaper's basic unpainted orcs average out to $3.50 a mini in their $14 four-packs. They're good, basic figures, and they're metal and pre-assembled so that's a bonus if you hate the idea of gluing plastic together.

www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/orcs

These are probably all obvious suggestions, but it's what I got. ;)

I really do think the GW skeletons are hidden gems though. Most people write off GW as overpriced, and much of the time that's accurate, but some of their basic troops like that are the best bargains around.

Regarding the skeletons Law just posted about, you may save a few $$ if you buy through Amazon:

It depends on how much GW charges for shipping though, I guess.

I have been out of the loop too long, so I was in a similar boat. Check your local hobby stores, sometimes they can put you in touch with people looking to sell their stuff or trade a bit. Mine also has a clearance section with some startlingly cheap pewter.

While I advocate patronizing a brick and mortar shop as much as your budget allows, Amazon also has a nice selection of minis through various 3rd parties you can buy from through Amazon. This will let you use Amazon credit that you can get from trading Amazon things you don't need. There are a mess of other ways to get Amazon credit too. I racked up about eighty bucks for Amazon with a handful of books I had no use for (and that local used book shops were only offering about 10 bucks for).

If you have Magic, Yu-gi-oh, or other things that resell a bit some shops will take them for credit. If you don't have a local one that will I know Troll and Toad does it online. My evil plan is to get as many minis as I can without spending cash so I can reserve my money for more DF and for "special" nicer minis.

Also, Pathfinder does have a mess of prepainted stuff out there. Oh, and one last: you can easily and cheaply rebase cheap minis from other things like Dreamblade and Mageknight. You can get an eight pack of washers from Home Depot for 98 cents and paint them black to use as bases, I glue with E-6000, it's cheap and holds really well.

My players rue the day I bought "Dragon Mountain". Ever since they give every creature a bit more respect. You never know when the GM will decide that this group is crafty...

I am culling the herd of my DnD pre-painted figs again - this time about 650 or so Including a Garguantuan Black Dragon - plenty of goblins, orcs, undead, a beholder, character type figs - was going to throw them up on e-bay because such a lot would likely pay for my kickstarter pledge but I'd be willing to cut my fellow Dwarven Forge brethren a deal before I go to E-bay. I'd perfer to sell these as a lot rather then a fig here and there.

If Interested send me an e-mail at alexm1119 yahoo.com and I'll e-mail you a list of what I have.

i too feel the pain of missing out on the Reaper bones KS BUT if you like kickstarters theres this one that just went up while not very generic or cannon fodder they are some awesome minis and i like center stage miniatures for their old school approach to the monsters im hoping they get a decent amount for some nice stretch goals

Regarding Pathfdiner pre-painted, they are available AND gorgeous. The first set (Heroes & Monsters) was good, but the other 2 sets are even better. The painting is really top notch for pre-painted. THe minis are a bit more fragile than the DDM line, but overall, i like PF better.

You can go check them out here (picture don't do them justice, but it's better than nothing):

I was in your same situation just two years ago. I decided to start collecting DF and now needed minis. My goal was to collect a very large number of pre-painted minis, so I could use just about any monster or NPC I needed. I learned quickly though that painted metal was to expensive and Pathfinder minis are some of the best but also expensive. Wizards of the Coast Dungeon & Dragons miniatures was the route I chose. I bought a large number of the minis mostly on Craigslist and usually in lots of 300+. i never paid more than 50-75cents each. I only used Paypal when buying off of Craigslist, because of wanting some insurance. I hope this helps.

P.S. I rarely buy off of EBay because the price is too high.

I have a crapton of prepainted MageKnight mini's I'm happy to part with locally, or as part of a larger trade or sale. Last time I sold them at ten cents per mini plus shipping, although this was part of a larger trade. I also have a Battle Masters sealed set I'm thinking of selling for $50. I also have a Warhammer Fantasy 5th edition Starter Set for $150 - $250. I live in the SF Bay Area, so can avoid shipping costs if you live nearby.

Here's my trade list from BGG:
boardgamegeek.com/collection/user/Sam%20and%20Max?trade=1&ff=1&subtype=boardgame

You can also find MageKnight in bulk on eBay. Incomplete sets of HeroQuest and Battle Masters are good buys.

But I'd say wait on KS until you get another Reaper Bones or MYTH KS. Heck, if you ask the MYTH KS folks, you still might make the $100 Captain for 150+ mini's level.

Does anyone know (first or second hand) if the Confrontation Age of Ragnarok prepainted miniatures work with Dwarevn Forge? I attempted to research, but I get answer that put their size between small for 28mm, and approximately 32mm in size. They look pretty nice (for prepainted), but a straight answer on size has been hard to find.
