PTOLUS CAMPAIGN TIPS 1 Year, 9 Months ago
I was lucky to pickup a copy of Ptolus, Monte Cook's City by the Spire and was wondering how many people have GM or played in this campaign. I've just started reading and can hardly put it down!

Any advice, tips, from players or GM's of the campaign? Has anyone tried using DF sets for some of the encounters?

I just finished running a Ptolus campaign that lasted 5.5 years! Six players finished, and at one point (for about 2 years) we had seven players. Probably the most fun and most work I have had running a campaign, ever. The layout of the book and the city itself are simply marvelous and provide for almost limitless options (which my players made good use of!) if you are willing to put in the time & effort to make it work. I melded the Phon Quartermaine & other adventures from chapter 33 with the Night of Dissolution AND the Banewarrens AND the Spire into the most epic adventure to ever happen within a 3 mile radius!!! I used DF sets for MANY of the encounters and used pieces from the sci-fi sets during certain adventures where chaositech is present - worked perfectly!

I have about 2GB of my own and other fan created materials that I can share with you if you like. Everything from small detailed parts of Ghul's labyrinth to expanded rules for purchasing and furnishing property/buildings to dozens of issues of the Courrier broadsheet bursting full of plot hooks and misinformation!

Really, I simply can't say enough good things about Ptolus. By then end of the campaign two clerics of Pelor had founded an orphanage, two others (on their second characters) re-founded an order of Knights while another became the leader of the Litorians in the Mane before eventually inadvertently causing their extermination at the hands of the Church of Lothian during the Times of Chaos that enveloped the city. No less than 4 unique prestige classes were created to fit with the characters actions and directions....the bard wrote a book titled "How to Be a Delver (and really did write a 30 pages of it, filled with stories of their own adventures & misadventures). He helped resurrect a noble house (House Abbercombe) and became the scion of the house. They had numerous dealings with the Malkeen Balacazar, who often used them for his own schemes. They ensconced Shilukar at Castle Shard and were subsequently robbed by him of a load of mithril & black adamantine they found. At one point (during year 2 I think) Vastur Caine & Co (the name of their Delving group) bought the Greyson house after they cleared it of Goblins and discovered it had its own private dungeon (part of Ghul's labyrinth). So much fun when they went exploring down there and discovered another Delving group had stumbled upon *their* dungeon!

Oh my, I could go on and on and on! Truly, the most fun I have had gaming, ever!

Contact me off board if you want to chat more about it or want to bounce ideas off me or want some of the *stuff* I have for Ptolus.

Cheers!

Harneloot,
Thanks so much for the passages filled with exciting adventures your party had in Ptolus...it makes me anxious to run the campaign even before I'm ready! :-)

I will certainly take you up on your offer of whatever material you created to make running a game of Proud more exciting and/or easier. I'll you an email shortly...it will be from dndgamer at live.com

Thanks again.

If you can find it, there is a sweet large vinyl map of the city. Its about 2 1/2 by 3 feet. I saw one going for about $100 on ebay a few weeks ago. Just staring at it gave me good ideas, plus it looks awesome to to roll across the table while everyone gathers around it.
Be sure to get the player handbooks to your group and also get the Secrets of the Delvers Guild pdf for yourself. Good stuff in there.
All else I refer you to Harneloot, the Ptolus lord.

I actually have the 4 x 6' map. I only mentioned the smaller one as I thought it may be more readily available. I think there is/was also a map by section available in pdf that you can piece together to make the large 4 x 6 map. If you printed it on some kind of heavy paper you could paste it to foamcore or heavy poster board. May be a cheaper alternative.

One last thing, I didn't enjoy the comic that much.

Ummmmmm, no. It would be too difficult to replace. But good luck in your search.
