Does anyone run Hackmaster? I have been looking over the free Hackmaster Basic edition and so far I am impressed. The combat system seems really interesting at first glance. I am thinking about running a one shot for my gaming group at some point. For those of you who have played it, what are your opinions on the game?

If I wasn't already running DCCRPG, that would be the game I would want to try. It looks like a blast. Let us know how it goes if you run it.

I have very limited experience with it, but based on that (and reading some reviews) I think:

1 - they try too hard to be funny, which isn't what I buy rules for, and

2 - they intentionally wrote the player and DM books so that the understanding of the rules is slightly different, creating an adversarial environment and setting people up to argue about the rules rather than play the game. I believe that this is supposed to be part of the "humor", or a contrived effort to introduce bickering and rules-lawyering as part of the "real RPG experience".

I think only up to 4E is a parody game. The latest edition (5E or Advanced) has had the humor stripped away leaving a seemingly well designed RPG. here is the basic version which takes you up to level 5 and leaves out a few of the more advanced rules. The advanced Hackmaster player's handbook is only available for purchase. As of right now, there are only two books for the core edition, the player's handbook and the monser manual. They haven't released the DM's guide yet.

I found the latest rules very interesting...I have played the game briefly at Gary Con...it is worth taking a look at...sort of old school...
