Stefan, the news that Dwarven Forge will eventually make a modular castle kit is awesome. I think I'll have to stay on the sidelines on this one, though I do wish them the best of luck.

When Dwarven forge produces castles, I'll be sure to purchase those. Can we see a few concept shots of the work DF has been doing on their castles? I'd love to see what is coming down the pipe-line in the next year or two.

The complexity put me off too.
I'll wait to see what the Forge creates!

It also seemed comparatively more expensive than DF?

Exciting news about a DF castle set!  I'm just starting my addiction, but with the arrival of my Ruins set (my first) I know these bits of magical resin are going to be an interest of mine for a long time.
All that said, I'm still backing the Castle! kickstarter. It seems like this product is going to be sufficiently different from a DF castle that there will be room for both on the table. DF seems like an artist's take on awesome terrain (being as Stefan is, y'know, an artist), while Castle! is an engineer's take on awesome terrain. It's certainly true as Stefan pointed out that the Castle! walls will lack character and artistry in their stonework, at least compared to DF. The upside is that the pieces securely lock both horizontally and vertically, sufficient to build a six foot tall tower(!). Each level of a castle can also be easily removed for gameplay (they've posted a new video showing this). They already have a working portcullis in one of the stretch goal sets, and they're working on a functioning drawbridge. Basically, the Castle! set seems like ultra deluxe Lego pieces for building huge castles and then playing in them. I'm sure the eventual DF castle will be awesome too, and I will most likely add it to the (long) list of DF I plan to acquire. Hey, I like apples and I like oranges too - sometimes in the same meal, even.

By the way, anyone who wants to support the Castle! kickstarter without pledging can "like" it on Facebook, tweet about it, or just pass along word of mouth. Thanks!

Kickstarters during Christmas are bad for me. I have too many DF stuff on my to buy list (more MBS, MBS expansion set, Hellscape, more caverns, more everything!).

Of course DF announces that there is a castle set in the future just after I finish working on the first pieces to my fortress wall set.

In the end it will be big enough to surround a large DF set-up. I ordered the largest hotzmat and I am getting a new big table.

Re:Modular Castle kickstarter 1 Year, 10 Months ago
I was looking in their comments section and it looks like they have read this thread. They left a response.

First, we’ve always admired and even own Dwarven Forge dungeon, which we’ve mentioned in this comment thread. Stefan’s got some valid points though, but I think they are addressed by our product as follows:

Texture: Any photo with miniatures in it is an actual picture of product we have in hand, and I think the texture on the prototype pieces speak for themselves. I’ve left pieces with my local gaming store, so if you’re in the Kansas City area you can come and put them in your hand.

Build time: Amber stacked up the pieces in the sample photo to 30 inches in less than 5 minutes. Of course the more complex building you want on your table the more time it will take to assemble, but you can have functional tabletop gaming size buildings on the table in minutes.

Smooth Pegs: You can pre-peg pieces for quick building or even put whole assemblies together for quicker use when you’re gaming. We’ve also developed smooth pegs, which will allow you to move things on the fly during games and further reduce construction time. We’ve played with both products and it takes no more time to set up than a DF dungeon.

Storage: As a terrain and model builder I know space is at a premium. This is among the easiest terrain products I’ve ever had to store. The fact that walls can be separated from the floor nallows you to store like pieces together very densely and efficiently.

Experience: There will be bumps along the way, but we’ve learned a lot over the years both about business and the modular construction system. Between the four people working on this project at the moment we’ve started 5 successful previous businesses and have over 25 years of manufacturing and logistics experience. We’re going to get this business started and the product out this time too.

Thanks for letting me address these concerns.

J.L

Maybe they are still reading this. If so, it would be nice to see a video actually putting a structure together by hand so we can see how it is done. Also, I see the animation of removing floors to access different levels but could we see this done with an actual model?

The video does allay my concern about on-the-fly deconstruction, but not completely. I note that the model is taken apart by entire levels -- can it be taken apart by portions of a level, or portions of multiple levels?

Sections can be set up for easy deconstruction using particular joins, but doesn't that require pre-knowledge of where the castle will be taken apart? My games are rarely that predictable.

That said, it is a very interesting execution of the modular castle concept, and there are a few reasons that we should not balk at joining this endeavor.

1. Taken solely on its own merits, it is a hell of a good idea.

2. We've seen enough DFers unload their DF collections on the boards and on eBay to realize that the financial risk is not as great as it seems. If you don't like it as much as you'd hoped, or if something better comes along later, you can probably recover at least a decent portion of your investment.

3. As much as I like and respect Stefan, one line about castles being something he would eventually get around to is hardly something we should bank on. There are a lot of product projects he would like to do, some of them for years now. Please don't think that this is any kind of criticism. There is only one Stefan, and he deserves to have a life beyond DF. And DF is a small company with limited resources and a philosophy that prevents them from putting out products they are not proud of (thankfully!). Don't forego the opportunity to buy something that appeals to you because a DF version might be "just around the corner".

4. The experience thing may not be that big a deal. They've been working on this for over a decade. They have, no doubt, learned many lessons from other modular terrain/building companies, from Ainsty to Zeitierdes with stops at Mage Knight and Dwarven Forge and Miniature Building Authority along the way. They appear to have got the design just the way they want it, and despite my quibbles it is a good one for what they want it to be.

5. Competition is good. It stimulates creativity and encourages efficiency. We are better off in a market that has multiple viable players.

If I were in the market for a modular castle, I'd probably be all over this. Maybe when I've seen more pictures of actual set-ups in actual use I'll pry open my wallet.

Re:Modular Castle kickstarter 1 Year, 10 Months ago
Jeremy and William reached out to me and made me reflect upon and regret criticizing their kickstarter project...sometimes I fail to realize that my words may impact the efforts of other well intentioned gamers of which I should feel a camaraderie with...

...they reminded me that I actually met them back in 2000 at Origins...and may have even lifted a beer with them!!

So, I am pretty embarrassed about that for lifting a beer with someone is not to be taken lightly...

At the time, I criticized them (I had no idea who they were) for what I viewed as blatant advertising of their project on my very own forum...for a project which I also intended to create.....that was not the greatest feeling for me...and so I spoke hastily and without respect...they assured me that they did not do so, and would not have done so out of respect.

I apologize to Jeremy and William.

And i also reflect, that even if they are making a modular castle there should be room in this world and in one's collection for more than one castle...their efforts may indeed be worthwhile and may in fact be more fitting to one's want's than any incarnation that I might myself design...

So, Once again, I apologize. And yes, it is true that It might be a year or two before my sculptures are done. I take back my hasty comments, i have not actually seen any of these pieces first hand, and like they said, they are still in the works and might, in fact turn out quite well.

Sincere apologies and regrets,

Stefan

Well said indeed, Stefan!

I'm still barely starting out with Dwarven Forge, but everything I've seen indicates that you guys AND your product are top-of-the-line. As I've said elsewhere, I'm excited about backing the Castle! project AND I'm excited about filling my closet with Dwarven Forge. I just ordered Hellscape x2 (thanks again, Jeff!) and can't wait for Hellscape II in 2013.

Incidentally it looks like the Castle! project may stop for now and reboot in early 2013 with a revamped Kickstarter.
