TOPIC: My new Table Top

My new Table Top 2 Years ago
I have not been around lately due to playing Sci-Fi games that don't involve terrain. But, I did upgrade my table top in the meantime.

I was tired of 2 folding tables put together. There was a seam down the middle, and the tables shifted quite easily. So I got myself a 60" x 72" piece of plexiglass, made a grid on my computer and had Kinko's print it, and bolted it onto my 2 folding tables to make 1 solid table.

I now have a 5 foot by 6 foot table covered entirely with a 1" grid. In addition the top is plexiglass so we can use wet or dry erase markers on it all day long. And as an added bonus the entire table top glows under a black light for our Cyberpunk games :)

Very nice table, I like the idea of using the grid and the plexiglass. I bet that cost alot less than some of those custom gaming tables that run upward of 10K to purchase :).

ALOT less. The Plexiglass was $90 delivered, and the grid cost $230 to print. And, I prefer this to the Gamer Chic tables - I just want a nice big, flat gaming surface. In addition, if I spent $10K on a table, I don't think I would let anyone near it - this plexglass makes for a durable play area that is inexpensive to replace/repair down the road if something does happen to it. I look at all the things hanging off of Gamer Chic tables and all that comes to mind is someone breaking it!

Where did you order your plexiglass sheet from? That's a pretty decent price for one that big. What thickness was your plexiglass sheet?

I got it from a local small business. I got 1/8" thickness. That is light enough it won't stress the inexpensive tables beneath it, and thin enough not to diffuse the black light so our Cyberpunk games are still cool with lots of UV.

If you wanted something similar, type in "plexiglass sheets" in yellowpages.com and see what is near you.

If someone else is planning to do a similar assembly, I would suggest to use Lexan (1/8 inch in thickness) instead of Plexiglass. It is a material that has similar properties then plexiglass, except that it is slightly more resistant to scratches and even more transparent!

I have used a similar setup with a smaller piece of plexiglass that just sat on the tables when needed. It saw much use and never ended up with any visible scratches. Also, while it does produce some glare, it was not enough that anyone really noticed or complained about it, and trust me, we used to have the world's biggest complainer in our group!

Very cool!

Have any of you guys seen this:
www.kickstarter.com/projects/1327678769/the-future-of-table-top-role-playing-games?ref=live

A portable gridded gaming "briefcase" with drawers and stuff. Unfortunately this didn't reach its funding goal in time, but they plan on carrying on as Cosmic Compass Creations. Maybe they will find a way to get this product made anyway.

That looks kinda cool granpappy, but not a large enough playing surface methinks...
