Biowizard,

If you don't mind, I actually do plan on trying to reproduce your technique for painting the mushrooms. The steps are quite logical and I've painted with similar techniques in the past. I plan on ordering a batch or two of the mushrooms and the matching paints you used before the Christmas holiday and paint using these steps. I really love the shades of these mushrooms for the caverns.

Thank you so much for posting the guide. I really appreciate the time you took to write up all of your steps.

Of course if DF produced some beautiful mushrooms like these for us, I'd buy them in a blink of the eye to save the time with all the painting. ;). Variety with the mushroom designs in our caverns would be welcome as well!

I'll cross my fingers that we have mushroom and crystal cavern accessories from DF in the future since they are on my wishlist.

awesome tutorial Dwarf! Thanks so much for posting it for everyone here, it's great! How about a picture of the shrooms inside a cavern?

yes, there may be some shrooms in an upcoming Cavern type environment late next year....

Stefan,

That sounds promising! I look forward to seeing shrooms in a future cavern setting :). The cavern sets are some of my favorites from DF so I'm glad to hear more are coming.

Biowizard,

How big are these mushrooms compared to the cavern sets and a 28mm mini?

Very beautiful mushrooms. I just wanted to say one more time that I love the colors you picked out and the matching cavern floor color scheme on the bottom was very impressive.

Arcarius2001,

I'm glad you like 'em! I will indeed soon go back to Canada and join my gaming buddies with a LOT of cool stuff. Regarding which paint between Vallejo Model Color & Reaper Master Series is best, there is no definite answer. They are different products! Basically, you need to shake Vallejo bottles like crazy to resuspend all the pigments present in them. This is painful but the less paint there is left in a bottle, the easier the mixing process becomes. Reaper master series paint is much easier to shake and resuspend as there are much less pigments per units of volume. Once you start painting though, Vallejo's paint covers very well! 1 or 2 coats and you don't see the color underneath anymore. On the other hand, Reaper's paint lets colors underneath show through. This is useful for doing lots of highlights! For my painting style (black-liner, dry-brusher, rarely highlighting...), Reaper's paint is painful.

You can listen to some pro-Reaper comments here:

You can listen to some pro-Vallejo comments here:

The cheapest retailer of Vallejo paints I found in the US is www.miniaturemarket.com/accessories/model-paints/vallejo-model-color-paint.html

You can hardly beat $2.45 per bottle!

The Game Color line of Vallejo paint is something different altogether. They were trying to imitate Citadel/GW's old line of paints, both in colors and properties. I Don't like it...

Stefan,

I (hum hum Biowizard... ;-) ) am glad you like my tutorial and it is my pleasure to contribute in any way I can to such a lively community. You exposed me, I'm a big DF fan! I will gladly make pictures of the mushrooms within cavern sets (and plenty of other dioramas hopefully) when I am soon reunited with my big DF collection, waiting for me patiently in storage in Montreal.

jgardner44,

I got it, you like my painting scheme. You can say it a few more times, I don't mind. ;-) Regarding scale, they are perfect for 28mm, as all of Grendel's casts. There is an expression in french: "an image is worth a thousand words". Here it is:

Here are the other unpainted Grendel mushrooms I have (2 sets each).

Thanks BW. Those photos really help me visualize the sizes of the mushrooms in this set. I see you've bought the other mushrooms that I'm keeping my eye on as well. I hope you will show us the colors you paint on these as well when they are finished :).

Dwarf,

I'll be doing the very classic & very touristic German tour: Berlin & Bavaria. I heard from other Germans that this is not the "real" Germany but I am assuming myself completely as a tourist here. Furthermore, it will be a romantic getaway with my wife, as I lived separated from her for more then 2 years, so I will have to pass on your generous meeting offer. Regarding changing an Avatar, here's another tutorial (feel free to do it or not):

Step 1
Right-click "save image as" from the following picture until it is on your desktop:

Step 2
Click "My profile" at the top of this page.

Step 3
Click "My Avatar" in the top left section.

Step 4
Browse toward your saved picture and click "upload".

Voila!

Shadox, I assume you mean the mushroom tutorial and not the Dwarf avatatr tutorial! ;)
Although it could be funny if we all took Dwarf's pic as our avatar.

Bio, thanks for the advice on Reaper vs Vallejo and the videos. I think that maybe I will go with Vallejo after all as my painting style sounds a lot like yours.
