I don't typically use music in my games, though I have downloaded and plan to experiment with the DMDJ ipad app.

As a suggestion for you, check out Glenn Danzig's "Black Aria" solo/concept album- there's some cool, creepy stuff and I believe it is all instrumental.

Some pieces are short enough (for example, a lot of the Doctor Who selections) that you can cue them up to use at key moments. You can select themes for name villains, locations, monsters, or situations (like combat, victory, plot twists, etc.), then play just that track at the appropriate moment.

It can also be fun to create a soundtrack for your campaign. Each player can pick a theme for his character, and the DM picks one for the game and/or the main villain(s).

Or have I revealed whole new realms of nerdiness?

I side with Harneloot. I too find it a distraction during the game. However, prepping for a game is another matter. I usually find myself listening to Blue Oyster Cult, especially "Black Blade" and the rest of the Cultosaurus Erectus LP. You cannot miss when Michael Moorcock is your lyricist! Other favs are The Broadsword and the Beast album by Jethro Tull and British Steel by Judas Priest.

But Mars, the Bringer of War is a great pick!!

Blue Oyster Cult does have some pretty awesome rpg music. I have to agree with that. I love the veteran of the psychic wars song.

Can you imagine playing DnD with Ozzy?! It would have to be Original or Holmes rules. He doesn't strike me as a tactical rules kind of guy so 3.5 is out. If you ever get to play with BOC, make sure that if one of them breaks character you stand up and scream "I need more cowbell!"

But seriously, what a good way to pass time while on the tour bus back in the day. I would bet BOC at least tried it, given the fantastic and sci fi elements in their songs. Do you know how badly I wanted that sword in White Plume Mountain after hearing Black Blade?! And jgardner's on the spot with Veteran of a Thousand Psychic Wars. Who but a gamer could write a song like that?

Music is an elemental part of my gaming and one of my most important tools as a GM. I always use it to enhance the atmosphere. It's very difficult for me to even imagine to play without it. That would be like watching a movie without music.
Every Campaign has it's own theme and sometimes even characters have their own theme song. I also create an intro for every campaign which means I mix music and record a spoken intro which will be processed and edited via a sound editing software. This is then played at the beginning of every game session to set the mood.

Sorry that I cannot list the soundtracks and songs I use, I have converted everything to mp3 and sorted it in genre specific folders and I sometimes don't even know from which soundtracks some songs come. I have the luxury to have very talented musicians and music enthusiasts as friends and I have a big collection of songs. Two soundtracks I know I heavily use in my D&D games are the classic Conan soundtracks. Perfect for battle. ;)

As for my D&D campaign I don't use modern music. I always try to have specific music for a RPG genre. That's why I don't use most of the music I use for my fantasy campaings in settings like SciFi or Horror.

I find it very interesting how different the approach on music in RPGs is. After reading that some of you don't use music at all I'm very intrigued to try it just to feel the difference again. Thank you for that, this will be interesting! :)

@Kronos- your choice of words, "Music is an elemental part of my gaming" kinda made my brain connect the words "music" and "elemental." I need to get on the DnD monster builder and see if I can make a decent "Musical Elemental!"

That is an awesome idea! Way better than the "singing dragon monster" I remember from the Forgotten Realms Monste rmanual (or some other book). A music elemental. I really like that. :D

This is an excellent topic and with such a fantastic response. Some GREAT music and ideas here. :)

I can only add a few more to this list of such good quality:

Sally Oldfield - "water bearer" (Great for fairy forest glades / Nymph / Tolkien style sections)
Medwyn Goodall - "druid" (Good haunting forest music as you approach the dungeon)

& I noticed that "Going deeper underground" was already listed. In a similar style:
Beatles - Help! (Good for when the party are running from something....)

I just discovered the most awesome music ever for fantasy RPG inspiration...Two Steps From Hell.

They are 2 guys who write music for movies and movie trailers. It is the stuff you hear when the heroes are riding out to start a quest, or during an epic battle sequence.

Totally awesome.

Here is a you tube of one of their songs...

I have been listening to them alot lately as I am gearing up to start running Dungeons and Dragons again!

I have experimented with music during game play some. In my head it always seems brilliant but in practice it is usually just distracting. What I did was come up with different background music for different scenarios: Exploring a dungeon, Combat, creepy music for undead themes, village music (Lord of the rings hobbit stuff does well for this)...my favorites were:

1. The classic Conan soundtracks
2. Lord of the Rings
3. Game of thrones soundtrack
4. Midnight Syndicate
5. Beowulf Soundtrack
6. Troy Soundtrack
7. Gladiator Soundtrack

I even incorporated music into one of my games. My players were in an old abandoned manor that was haunted and they came to a room that had a tree growing through it. They could hear someone singing this song faintly:

Oh Willy Waly from the Innocents

What they didn't know was that the singer was an Attic Whisperer

My group was thoroughly creeped out.
