Colorful custom-made Gelatinous Cubes 2 Years, 4 Months ago
I posted 2-3 months ago a thread describing a project where I custom-made 22 green gelatinous cubes. I sold 18 of them on eBay at an average selling price of $18 per cube. Given the demand, I decided to cast a few more! Since then though, I have improved my technique. I now only use the 2 parts EasyCast Epoxy resin which minimizes the artefactual bubbles I sometimes got alongside the edge of the cubes during the curing process. Furthermore, I have acquired a few different colored inks that now allows me to cast colorful gelatinous cubes!

I am selling those cubes to other DF forum members for $17 a piece (plus combined shipping: $7 US, $7 Canada, $10 for other countries). Just contact me: thi23erryber98to53meu at gmail dot com (remove numbers from the address). Any profit I make will be going one way or another to DF as I'm a big client of their products. I am planning to sell those cubes as well on eBay again and I'll be sure to include a link to the DF forum in the auctions' description. Last time I did that, the thread I wrote got over a thousand "views", probably due to the visit of many new first-time readers. It is my hope that this will increase again the visibility of DF products to potential new customers!

The available colors for now are: clear, green, yellow, blue, red, dark green & black. The cubes are slightly darker in reality then what they show in the following picture:

Once again, these cubes are perfect for DF corridors!

As a very geeky joke to hardcore D&D fans, I could not resist taking one more picture of my cubes. I present you: the Prismatic column of Gelatinous Cubes!!!

I know they're not the exact colors but tell me who would buy an orange, violet or indigo cube and where could I find the respective inks for those colors anyway!?!

Biowizard,

Wonderful cubes. I would be interested in seeing the orange and violet cubes and I plan to buy some of your green and white cubes in the future if you can still produce some in a month or two when my budget will allow purchasing them. Can you make any cubes with a hollow center so you could place it over the top of a figure? This would be an interesting way to show someone being digested, or a skeleton in the center. The colorless technique would make for an interesting person incased in force, or frozen in ice.

I bet you could make some fun slimes with these methods as well!

Keep up the awesome work. I was just reading your post on the "breathing" crystals you designed. Wonderful work there too :).

I may also be interested in a month or so in getting 1 or 2 of those cubes. They look amazing!

Thanks for the kind words! I'm glad you like my cubes.

I think I have used the 3 molds I made up to a point where any other resin cast I would do with them would start to show defects. The silicone has changed color from a bright pink to a dull white on the lips and the material has started to become brittle. Although all the cubes I already made are the best I have ever done, I will probably need to do new molds if I am to ever do more cubes.

When I first sculpted my original cube, it was important for me that it would fit into a 2"-wide DF corridor. If I were ever to make them hollow, for instance to fit inside someone being slowly digested, I think the available space created within my cubes would be quite small and I think that's why the Gelatinous cube from the official D&D mini line was made so big! If I am to make more molds, I might try some hollow cubes. I might even offer custom-made cubes with a figure stuck in them to people interested... we'll see.

I would be interested in a 4" "parent" green cube to use as a central monster in an sewer setting if you ever make one. I'm going to have a trap door drop players into a pit with it and have stairs guarded by 2" "baby" cubes that the players have to try and get past before the big cube gets them. This would give lots of room to have skeletons in the big cube to represent adventures who failed ;).

Oh, I had to share some of my favorite gelatinous cube pictures.

A 4"-wide cube would be very unpractical to make using my method; it would cost 8 times more to produce, resin-wise. Perhaps you could find a translucent plastic box the right size?

On another topic, I was not quite satisfied with how much shiny my cubes turned out to be after 2 coats of Krylon triple-thick crystal clear glaze, the spray can varnish reported to have the most glossy finish available at my local art store (Blick). I bought and tried a few more brush-on varnishes and, after a few failures, I must say that I am now very satisfied with a varnish I tried: Liquitex high gloss varnish (Before this varnish on the right, after on the left).

I think this makes my cubes the "slimiest" available around, as if they would break in your hands if you were to touch them or (even better) as if your hand would actually melt by touching them! Those of you who contacted me already, please give me a few days to give 2 more coats to all my cubes and let them completely dry and I'll ship you right up a new and improved version!

Your first picture reminded me of this scene from Doctor Who.

When you think about it... Gelatinous Cubes really are the Daleks of the medieval fantasy genre.

Fantastic work, Biowizard. I am seriously contemplating getting one or two.

I loved your Liquitex high gloss varnished cubes. Beautiful shine to those babies! That might make me want to buy a variety of colors ;). Now you should try to make us some fun slimes for the dungeons ;)

Would you be willing to post a picture with some of the other colors with the high gloss varnish? I would especially like to see before and afters of the green, blue, and red slimes. Thank you in advance.

jgardner44,

I unfortunately don't think I will do slimes as I'm not sure the demand is there, I don't have any more uncured Mold Max 30 rubber, it takes a lot of investments (time, money, interest) to start doing such a project and I'm a molecular biologist after all, not a professional resin caster. You are of course most welcome to do it yourself and show us the results by following my very detailed instructions!

Finally, I cannot post a picture of the cubes before and after the very glossy varnish as I have already varnished them all! Here's what they look like right now:

The light source and camera angles I use really influence how the cubes turn out to look on a computer screen. This is as close I can get my cubes to look as seen with the naked eye as my poor photographic skills allows it to be...
