Biowizard,

Thank you for posting those photos. I really do like the look of your varnished cubes. Very nice work and thank you for sharing all of the cool projects you work on. By the way, I like your mushrooms in the background of the second picture. Nice colors on those.

I hope you didn't mind me throwing out the slimes idea. I've always hoped to see someone make a few someday that I actually liked.

When my budget allows, I might try making some myself and I'll show my pictures. Be kind though as I'm sure it may take a few attempts to really master it.

The mushrooms are 2 Sets of Grendel's Shaman's Fungi (link) in the process of being painted to a good-enough standard. These are part of my ongoing effort to paint all my Grendel and Thomarillion's stuff... and no, these are not for sale. I will make sure to post my painted figures when I have enough of them. But then, when will I have enough of them? ;-)

I love the purple color scheme you picked. Very nice.

Are the stand alone mushrooms in the Grendel set as well? The link looked like just the two larger patches of mushrooms.

jgardner44,

There are 4 mushrooms per sets (2 stand-alone, 2 clusters). Grendel critically fail in my opinion at properly advertizing their great products...

Arcarius,

I hope you will like your cube when you receive it. The blue cubes turned out to be slightly darker then what I had hoped for (darker in reality then what they show in the picture). But then, this is probably my perfectionist side talking. Also, I'd like to recall DF forum users to contact me by email to have their cubes slightly cheaper then on eBay!

Biowizard,

Would you be willing to post the final pictures of your grendel mushrooms and some painting tips to get that great look you have going on there? I really liked your color scheme and I'm hoping to reproduce it if you don't mind so the base coat, wash, highlights, and glazes scheme would be great help in reproducing those awesome shrooms ;)!

Thank you in advance big BW!

Received it in yesterday's mail (packed in some sort of lab supply box that I am sure to find good use for in transporting minis or some other crucial storage task). The Blue Gelatinous Cube is beautiful!! The shape and form is perfect and the color is awesome, a very nice shade of blue, not too dark at all. Absolutely gorgeous in the light but nice and dark ( and stealthy) in shadow. Excellent job Biowizard!!

jgardner44, I'll post some pictures when I'm done painting them. This could take some time.

Arcarius, I'm glad you like it... and the box I put it in! lol

Hi Lordannilhus,

I hope your 4 cubes will reach you soon and you will like them. Maybe I'll be revealing trade secrets here (it took me a lot of time and money to develop these cubes). But, I'll share with you anyway because I believe that unless you start investing a lot of time and money and start casting dozens and dozens of cubes and sell them, trying to undertake such a project will end up costing you much more then just buying a few cubes directly from me!!! ;-) Coloring resin needs a special method as water-based products (such as the typical acrylics most people use to paint minis) won't dissolve in it. I guess one person could use pigments directly but I haven't tested that option myself. What I did is use all my old GW Citadel inks and see what the results were.

Dark green ink: 33 ul/cube gives me my green cubes. Adding 10 ul/cube of black ink gives me my dark green cubes.
Red ink: I didn't like the end result. I'm not using it.
Brown ink: I didn't like the end result. I'm not using it.
Black ink: 20 ul/cube gives me my black cubes.
Blue ink: 30 ul/cube gives me my blue cubes.
Flesh wash (also an ink): I didn't like the end result. I'm not using it.

I then went to buy at my local art craft store (Blick) some more colored inks.

Winsor & Newton Calligraphy ink Winsor yellow: 133 ul/cube gives me my yellow cubes.
Winsor & Newton Calligraphy ink Crimson & Winsor & Newton Calligraphy Indian Red ink: respectively 73 & 30 ul/cube gives me my red cubes.

A ul (pronounced a micro-liter) is a volume measure that corresponds to a thousandth of a ml (milli-liter). As a molecular biologist (let me tell you, a molecule is quite small...), I have acces to second-hand micro-pipets that allow me to measure precisely those volumes. For a layman, a drop of ink (depending of the consistency of the solvent) is about 20 to 40 ul.

If I am to continue casting more cubes once those I have are sold, I might perhaps try more different colors and make this mysterious magician Roy G. Biv happy!

Next weekend, I'll be moving to Canada. My shipping fees will become the following:

Canada: $4
USA: $6
Rest of the world: $10

Also, remember that you can get them cheaper ($17 each) by contacting me directly by email than by buying them on eBay and that I keep updating my stocks (a post in the beginning of this thread; very little number of clear cubes left).
