Hook Horror coloring 2 Years, 8 Months ago
I picked up a Reaper Hook Horror (I believe they call it a "hooked terror") and I'm trying to give it an accurate 1e paintjob, but my 1e books are all in storage. I'm curious -- a Google image search makes it pretty clear that the "traditional" color scheme on this guy is black or dark grey with yellow for the claws and beak. But it also shows that this is the way the hook horror appeared in the old D&D toy line. So I'm thinking -- maybe they showed up on the cartoon this way, which would make sense given the use of primary colors and the somewhat simple color scheme.

So -- was it described that way in the first edition Monster Manual? Obviously the art would have been b&w then, but the descriptions usually included colors. Plus, maybe it showed up on the cover of a module or a Dragon mag?

In any case, were Hook Horrors always black and yellow?

I thought the hook horror showed up in some 1E adventures but didn't make it to the monster manual. I could be wrong, but I thought the first monster manual it made it to was the AD&D 2E monster manual.

The Fiend Folio entry for the Hook Horror gives no coloring description. From the 2nd Ed Monstrous Manual, "It has a tough, mottled grey exoskeleton, like that of an insect."

Also, "It is thought that the hook horror is distantly related to the cockroach or cave cricket," so I suppose you could look at real life pics of those two "relatives" to get some coloring ideas.

I love that mini. I think I will place an order with them before too long. I guess I will have to convert the hook horror to pathfinder as it doesn't appear to be listed in the bestiaries. Must be WoTC intellectual property?
