Which McFarland dragons do I buy? 2 Years, 8 Months ago
Hi folks! I'm trying to make my dollars stretch a little further! The WOTC dragons are expensive and I noticed some of you buy the Mcfarland dragons. There are a lot of different dragons and I was wondering which of the huge McFarland dragons work best? The bigger the dragon the better.

This is my favorite. I believe it is the biggest and most expensive of the line. It really looks evil and dangerous!

Oooohh.... so hard to pick just one! Or even two!

Mostly, this is a matter of personal preference -- the full line can be seen here:
www.spawn.com/toys/categorytype.aspx?categoryid=6

Go through series by series, see what you like. They're pretty much all somewhat large, about 6-8 inches on average. So it's mostly just the pose and style you prefer. The ones from series 5 all come with small figures on the base (or on the dragon) which are out of scale with D&D minis (they're about a third the size of regular 28mm figs) and a few others have figures on them, too.

Actually, one of my favorites has a figure, but he can be easily removed (with an exacto knife, at least). It comes on a fantastic rocky spire base, and it looks AWESOME. Sorcerer Clan dragon from series 3:

Another awesome dragon, or more accurately a dracoliche -- the Fossil Clan from series 6:

I'm a huge fan of the Komodo Clan dragon from series 4, a two-headed dragon that is pretty fierce:

All of them are huge by D&D mini standards, but the boxed set ones like the Fossil and the Hydra tend to be really massive. The largest boxed set dragons in the line are the Fossil, the Hydra, the Berserker boxed set from series 1, and the Eternal from series 2. The Fire Clan from series 5 is the "largest," in that (a) he's just a head and one claw, but he's still the biggest piece of plastic the line produced, and (b) in scale, he'd be ridiculously huger than anything else in the line. The Komodo from series 4 is actually kinda small, and the Sorcerer from series 3, which I pictured above, is moderately large, his size as a toy is mostly his huge base. He's still a big dragon, but not as big as the series 1 berserker or the Fossil or Hydra ones.

@ Law and Blowizard thanks for your comments. Law, I was looking for a website listing them to view each one. Thank you for the website address and I was looking at the Hydra Blowizard.

I thought I had made a great sale with a factory sealed WOTC Colossal Red Dragon and Gargantuan Black Dragon but it seems the lady ran off with my money. I've decided to see if I can get a couple extra dragons as soon as Paypal refunds my money from the McFarland line.

You might have more luck searching through ebay with the rightful spelling (McFarlane); with an "e". Law's advice regarding the fact that humans coming attached to dragons are not 25-28 mm classical scale is quite relevant.

The people attached to the dragons or bases are a major reason I didn't buy more of these, although the knight on the base of the dragon emerging from lava (Fire 5, I think) is easily removable.

Note that some have also complained about pieces falling off. These were designed to be display pieces, not gaming accessories.
