Favorite DnD class through the ages 3 Years, 2 Months ago
The recent thread re Monte Cook and a possible launch of 5th edition DnD got me thinking of the past editions and the classes I enjoyed playing. Then I wondered what everyone else enjoyed in those older versions of the game. Since we seem to be mostly old enough to have played several editions ( and some of us all the way back into the 70s and early 80s) I will toss that question out there.
So, what were your favorite classes to play from the various editions?

I will start with mine.

Dungeons and Dragons (0e): Elf
Advanced DnD: Druid and/or Magic User
Second Edition: Thief
3.0/3.5 : this one is tough due to the multiclassing and prestige classes mixing it all up. But I will stay with Wizard.
Pathfinder: technically not DnD but close enough for me; Witch
4th edition: never have played it

So, obviously I am partial to spellcasters.

Fighters and Thieves always for me - (Rogues depending on the edition for me)

In original AD&D I remember I also liked playing Monks but rarely rolled up the requisite stats to be able to make one (or to make one that would survive!)

Never liked Clerics and only interested in playing magic using classes if we were doing high level, otherwise there was a tendency to become the "torch holder" class once you had blown your useful spells for the day.

I, for one, am looking forward to 5th as a potential re boot of interest for my group in D&D. We've played lots of 4th and it's o.k. but everyone's bored of it now. The system is too combat orientated compared to previous editions in our opinions. (roll playing insteasd of roleplaying)

5th will be D&D's last chance for us - if it isn't good we will be going with Pathfinder.

Fighters, wizards or fighter/wizards but I loved the warlord from 4e.

To no one's surprise my favorite class is well...monks. I've played at least a dozen different types, blind-female, Thri-Kreen monk, Psychic Warrior, Ranger/Monk, human, and my last monk was my favorite of them all..human with Vow of Poverty and Forsaker prestige class. My monk couldn't own anything and couldn't have magic cast on him..even healing spells. Fun fun fun!

I hadrly ever get to play as I am usually the defacto DM....but when I do, here are my preferences:

Dungeons and Dragons (0e): Elf (fighter & Magic user? Whats not to like!)
Advanced DnD: Illusionist!
Second Edition: We stuck with 1e throughout the 80's & 90's, so never played this, though we did incormporate the non-weapon proficiencies into our games.
3.0/3.5 : Barbarian
Pathfinder: Haven't played this yet, but its next on our list once we finish our 5 year Ptolus campaign...
4th edition: never have played it (and never will :)

I favor classes (or systems) with lots of skill points, because it lets my characters do more stuff out of combat.

So I tend towards rogues, usually the gentleman thief type. I've also played a satyr cleric that was a lot of fun. I keep a short list of character concepts for various classes just in case, especially a magic-user I created for a one-shot play test who I'd like to play in an extended campaign.

My favorite class varies but I sure remember my first character. He was a Dwarven fighter named Gideon “De Hung” Donahue. He was a chaotic neutral little Dwarf with bad breath and strength of 18 (56), (remember having to role the percentage for strength?). When Gideon and I went our separate ways he was 9th level and had 82hp. Man he was rugged. He didn’t die (well there was that one time) he just retired some twenty plus years ago when girls, job and adult life intervened. Who knows, Dwarves are long lived, maybe he will return some day?

I mostly played fighters as a kid (back in the AD&D days) and only picked the game back up since 4E launched. And during that time, I've mostly been the group's DM. I just started taking a break from the head of the table, and in that time I have played a bard in Dark Sun (TPK on our second session) and am now a Warlord in Dark Sun (only played one session so far, so I'm crossing my fingers...HARD).

In all editions I enjoyed playing the cleric the most. Unless it was an evil campaign, then I have to go Thief and multiclass into fighter or wizard.

AD&D 1st: Thief (Assassin)
AD&D 2nd: Thief, Mage
D&D 3/3.5: Monk, Wizard
Pathfinder: Monk, Wizard, Summoner, Oracle (Battle)
4E: I don't know they all feel the same.
