We used DF for the first time... 2 Years, 6 Months ago
Just having picked up a few of the dungeon sets, I used DF for the first time in my C&C campaign just recently.

I have seen some absolutely amazing displays here on the forums, but that was never my intention. Our whole group liked the idea of quickly setting up the current room we were in to give us a good 3d representation of the battlefield. I set up a small square room (6 tiles x 6 tiles or so) with some stairs up to the next level and barrels, crates, etc. as the room was used for storage.

This simple little setup added so much to the game. It really helped to visualize the situation the characters were in. Heck, I even lowered my head down to table level to check if a character had line of sight to a bad guy through the 1 open doorway. We all loved it, and can't wait to use it again this coming weekend.

21 sets and counting. Seems like I never have enough!

Awesome! I never get tired of hearing stories about people's first DF encounters! Be careful, though, as soon you'll be wondering if maybe you need one more set...or "Ooo, that accessory pack looks nice." Before you know it you are having to come up with creative storage solutions because it has taken up the vast majority of your free space! Anyway, don't mind me. :P

Too true! Like Eric, my intent was just to have a better visualization of the terrain, elevation, etc. Seventeen sets in less than a year and yeah, totally had to find storage space I hadn't planned for! But I love it.........can't wait for the restock.

C and C is a less tactical game than 3.5 or Pathfinder though. You may just be able to resist the addiction....maybe.

I plan on spending some money when the restock comes - I don't mind getting a few more sets. But I simply do not have the time to make these elaborate setups I see here. I work ALOT - but that does give me the money to buy this stuff!

All the wicked editions and fantasy floor sets would probably be best bang for your time then perhaps? As long as you have enough corners....and don't forget Cavern (my personal favorite)!

Indeed - welcome to the boards and the addiction!

There are lots of ways to use DF, from a few pieces on a battlemat to a complex set-up that covers a 4x8 table with multiple levels. Some people set up beforehand, some set up during play. It's all good.

If you are just setting up one or two rooms at a time, then one or two of each basic set and one of each expansion should be more than enough for you.

However you DF, have fun and welcome to it!
