Max height of DF 2 Years, 7 Months ago
I have about 25 sets of DF now, but just got these sets. There are several sets I don't own like the Cavernous sets. I'm in the middle of designing a unique game table with two 4' X 7' playing services inside the table. Each playing surface will be stacked on top of the other surface, so I need to know what is a safe height between the playing surfaces? The max height I came up with was the large pillars at 2 1/2."
Is there any DF piece that is taller than 2 1/2"?

The idea is Level one of the dungeon can be the tables top. Level two of the dungeon can be the next table top inside the table. Level three can be the bottom of the inside of the table. I'm thinking right now a depth of about 5 3/4, which included the thickness of the middle board dividing the two playing surfaces.

That new Hellscape gate or whatever it is looks kind of tall. Also, what about other terrain like some of the Grendel or Thomarillion stuff? You should consider that you may want to accessorize with taller pieces. Also, going vertical with DF totally rocks! Especially with Caverns. You need room to have DF setups that can be two or three high.
That being said, how will this table work? How will the players access the deeper levels? Won't the top level(s) be in the way? Sorry if I am missing something in your explanation. I am one of those guys who really needs a picture, it is hard for me to visualize just from explanation.

It sound to me like he's envisioning a home brewed version of the sultian table or someething of the sort where he can have his dungeon set up with up to three levels and a table topper stacked over for the next level. Where ideally he could even lay. Table "cap" top leaving unfinished games covered and stored. A couple of possible hitches to this plan. Where will you be moving the layers to when your party moves " lower" dwarves forge is not light and 4'x7" talble topper of it will not move smoothly without a lot of room when you lift it out to get at the next level. This also holds true when returning the tiers if the party backtracks. Secondly in recent years it has become very common to see that the best set ups are not numerous single levels but stacked elevations mixed in that single layer of the core set up. That's what gives real life to DF personally. With this set up I think it might limit you somewhat if your not careful. Don't get me wrong I kinda like the idea but I think it needs some refining before ya can get it spot on. Hence why I'm helping lol

OK, I get it now. This may be crazy talk but how about this for a solution? What if each level was actually split in two with some sort of way to lower each half independently? If you could figure a way to swap out or slide each half below the raised level, you could raise the lower levels to the height of play. I have no idea how mechanically feasible this is, just an idea.

I still may be a step ahead of you geniuses. The very top of the table is removable in sections that are length wise. So the table top and the middle layer (2nd layer) are removable in say 8 inch X 7 feet sections. It's important to have these sections to maintain the structure of these boards. So, you can remove sections and keep other parts of the next layer down hidden.

By having three layers I can put MBA on top of the table and also inside the Gaming Dungeon (inside of the table) on the bottom layer (the bottom most part) of the inside and still close the top of the table. With this configuration I would be unable to slide in the middle boards on the inside of the table. This means I have about 5" 1/5 inches of height with the middle level removed! I can still remove the top 8" planks and only reveal certain areas of the town or say dungeon thats sitting on the bottom or even middle levels..

So can anyone measure there tallest pieces of DF?

I thought these posts are somewhat relevant to the discussion. It's
not exactly what you are doing but they might give you some ideas.

jls,
This brings out a interesting idea. I may want the middle board to be Lucite or some other clear material instead of wood? The visibility can be a plus at time. Thank you for finding these old posts.

If you were building a gaming table what would you want in the design?

You want the heights of:

Cavernous Chasm Set
Small Cavernous Platform (don't have, don't know)
Stalagmite Cluster (ditto)

Individual Pieces
Swinging Spiked Log Trap (don't have, don't know)

Wicked Additions 3
Giant Double Door (just under 3" tall)

And the easiest of all, the 6" Passageway set on end, which I happen to know is 6" tall.

Oh man, do I love those old IO posts! Total genius!! I have several of these pics saved to my iPad so I can drool over them whenever I like. Dare I say, it's gamer porn!

Monkplayer, IO is in Florida somewhere.....you should try looking him up to learn from a verified Dwarven Forge master. Kind of like Luke and Obi Wan.
