TOPIC: Outdoor Terrain to match the Woodland Set

As a specialist on this topic (GW trees), let me answer your questions. The base of the trees themselves sticks out beneath them for about 3mm. You could either file it away to get a more even base or leave it like that because they are still stable enough. You'd have this 3mm sticking out at the bottom though which might not be something you want.
Also the roots sometimes stick out of the tree so much that they might end up going into nowhere without a proper base. This said, you can of course put them on a different base more suited to your needs. Since they are in plastic any plastic glue or even super glue will fix them properly. On mine I didn't do the leaves though since my players tend to break them off the trees.

Here is some hands on reporting. My miniatures vacation is coming to an end, and I snapped a few pics here as I pack everything away for a while. I don't have a Woodland Set to take pictures with obviously, so may be you can imagine it from these photos using the Classic and Medieval Building sets.

First, I ordered some Woodland Scenics Premium Trees™, as seen here: woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/category/PremiumTrees. These require bases. I made bases out of balsa wood, green paint, and more Woodland Scenics flock. It was a lot of work for just a couple of trees.

The trees look soft & organic. They look pretty nice. At up to $20 for a single tree, I do not feel they are a good value. They also are not very big. I doubt they would blend in well with the Woodland Set.

Second, I have trees from Custom Kingdoms -- www.customkingdoms.com/products/tree-cluster-01 These were mentioned by Rick earlier in the thread. After looking closely at the photos I ordered some.

There are downsides. First they cost $25 a pop, or 3 for $65 (the trees are "clustered as 3, but really just 1 tree as you can see in the pictures.) The assembly is a little questionable, they appear to have consisted of the top glued to the trunks glued to the base. Its obvious where they were joined. One of my 3, 1 is not fully glued together and the top is a little squeeky.

Otherwise its a good product and I think blends in very well. I would like to see a lot more of these. However, I think the market for this is probably microscopic since its pretty easy to make cheap trees that look pretty good -- not so easy to make cheap dungeon sets that look pretty good.

I'm going to mess around with this when I have more time and try to sculpt some solid tree/foliage pieces. My test sculpts this week turned out very nicely and I should have some very gory pictures to post when Halloween rolls around :D

Holy cow those Custom Kingdoms trees look even better than I thought. It looks like I cannot escape them being included in a future purchase. Thanks a ton for that pic.
