TOPIC: Outdoor Terrain to match the Woodland Set

Outdoor Terrain to match the Woodland Set 3 Years, 1 Month ago
I've seen a lot of player's pictures and I read through some historical threads here (which I figured would be respectable not to bump.)

None of the outdoor stuff has really blown me away. I had planned on just using some railroad set terrain & trees, but I think they will look wrong next to the woodland set.

The best idea I have come up with so far is using a zuzzy mat painted to match the woodland set.

For trees, I'm not sure? I don't think anything will look right unless it came from Dwarven Forge.

I am going to test out high quality railroad trees & possibly some silk bonsai trees in an upcoming game. I will upload pictures. In the meantime I am going to keep thinking. While I've been painting miniatures since the early 1990s as a child, I have been doing the terrain stuff for only a few months.

Have you looked at Terranscapes? At least from the pics I've seen I think it's looks to be excellent quality. Terranscapes is coming out will several new items and the new pics that should be up in September, and ordering will open October 1.

Personally, I'd go with Eslo Terrain. Just amazing quality, free shipping (with a reasonably sized order), and an incredible variety of outdoor terrain. Maybe best of all, you wouldn't have to wait for Terranscapes to open back up (which I heard Nov. 1st but I could be wrong) and you don't have to sit on their page until it opens up and hurry to place an order before the owner closes it again. Plus, Terranscapes is currently set at 15 weeks from the date you do get your order in before you have it in your hands. It just isn't worth it unless you want something he offers that just no one else has, and apart from his Gladiator Arena, he simply doesn't.

We have made our own terrain boards. Yeah this stuff looks nice but what outdoor terrain has square features like this? Not very realistic IMHO.

I will start by saying that personal I would have like to see two other peices in this set.. curved wall or curved Corner.. That said Im excited about this set. I have alot of ideas where even with its squared nature it will work and do the job well,And in some cases VERY well.. Let me see if i can change your mind a bit. Just think about usefullness of the peices in this set to recreate enviroments like these.

One of the reasons I want this set is to play around with Woods and Ruins ..

And then you have Hedgemazes and the thought of using the Rivers and lake set as a natural barrir for the woodlend set .. JUST think how how good back side of thoes peices would look flush against water tiles... SO how did I do ?

You nailed it! Hedge mazes was one if the first thoughts I had when I saw the previews of this set. Also, the combo with the lake pieces should look great. I think this set will also work well with other mini terrain like trees and flocked hills etc to give a truly deep visual experience when in a forested setting. Combine this with Ruins and some Room pieces to make a Cormanthyr type setting. I cannot wait to get my hands on this one.

A little more research and it appears that the zuzzy mats take a month or two to arrive, so I'm not feeling so good about that one either.

The Eslo stuff looks good but not astounding. It doesn't particularly seem like it would match the woodland sets.

I talked to Mike, the owner of Terranscapes. I should of mentioned this in my last post, so that's my fault. He is putting up many new pics on his site. He has also has been improving the quality of his items. The wait time will be less and I think he is also hiring help. His new employee will allow for less wait after you place an order. The ordering will start October 1 and he doesn't plan to shut down the ordering like last time. If you read his blog you will see he has changed a lot of things due to talking with a business consulting firm.
Whai I can't tell you from a first hand perspective is about the quality of his work. I'm in the market for my first order of terrain. I'm still trying to figure out who has the most flexible terrain and the best quality.

I currently own 2 Zuzzy mats, Cobblestone & The Ruined Land (which I painted to be more verdant)and I’m very happy with them. The Ruined Land mat is 4 years old and has been used dozens of times and is beginning to be in need of a repaint. The painting of this mat takes about an hour and involves nothing more than applying a couple of washes and some dry brushing. The waits for the product can be long but they are very useful additions to your gaming. I also own several of his other terrain pieces and they are excellent as well.

Do you have any photos of it in use with Dwarven Forge sets?

Nice looking pics, but that is called landscaping IMHO. Had the wife look at them and she wasn't enthused either and she usually plays elves. Me, I am a dwarf and like my caverns.
