TOPIC: Felt Battle Mat?

Felt Battle Mat? 3 Years, 1 Month ago
I would appreciate it if anyone can point me to a battlemat made of felt that has one inch grids. My DF stuff slides a bit too much for my liking on my current mat.
Thanks!

I think GW and Citadel make flocked felt mats, and one of the two makes felt mats with painted backgrounds (space and sky), but I think they favor hexagonal over square grid. Opinions vary concerning quality and durability.

You might find an unmarked substitute at your local craft store, but a trip to an actual fabric store might also be worthwhile (you are looking for crushed felt in a solid color, no pattern). If you have a cardboard tube from a roll of gift wrap, consider rolling it instead of folding it.

I kept trying to find something similar for outdoor scenes. I ended up making my own (think I got the idea from someone on these forums). Anyway, I bought one of the large flocked mats from Woodland Scenics and then, using a yard stick and dental tool, hand-scraped the lines on it to make a grid. It looks pretty amazing, but it's tedious work.

not sure to understand..the mat on my blog it's not from hotzmat, but it's made with a green felt pen on a Railway Modelling mat.
you say "AND", because you want 2 different mat? I'm confused :-)

What I don't like about the Mat from Hotzmats (earth green: the one most likely to be used for outdoors fantasy settings) is that it is quite uniform. The same applies for the ones from Woodland Scenics (uniform tone of green). I've been considering lately to buy a Mat from terrainmat.com/, most specifically the Green Steppe Mat. There are several shades of green/brown which in my opinion is more realistically mimicking outdoors. Also, you can have your Mat printed with a 1 inch grid!

Yep, Hotzmats are good, and actually terrainmat.com is very cool as well. They are a little pricey, but they are textured really well, no two mats are the same. They do look great, I've used mine in a few of my pictures. Also, please look at mondayknight.com for Monday Knight Productions terrain mats. They come in a couple different sizes and colors, and of course allow you to choose if you want a hex grid or a standard square grid and what size. I have a 6'x4' with a 1" square grid that I use for dnd and miniature games that require something like that, and a 3'x3' without a grid that I use for standard Mage Knight games. They are both wonderful.

Thanks LegoRick! I have noticed that mat in some of your pics, always wondered who made it.
