Goblin, my 9 year old son (a Dragon Born) has been playing for two years now and my 7 year old daughter starts next week. She is a mouse ranger (Reaper)who rides a rabbit. Hey, it is what she wanted.

Big Teacher, I love it! Are you running DnD or Mouse Guard?

I play a 3.5/Pathfinder hybrid. I'm not familiar with Mouse Guard.

I'm using DF currently for Pathfinder Society play. I'm just back from PaizoCon UK where I had several set-ups.

Using it for existing scenarios can be a challenge. Some layouts are not easily build up. Also - for convention play I learned the hard way that setting up - and more importantly storing sets afterwards eats into your valuable break time as GM.

I'm solving this issue by using some wooden boards and build up before. I use some nailed down strips of wood to outline the dungeon and to ensure it stays in place. This way I just take a whole lay-out from my car and place it on the table. This actually speeds up play.

Some of my layouts for the Blakros Museum are in the Photo area. I have some more from the weekend but I admit - taking photos and being GM doesn't mix.

And sometimes you have to be flexible. I did one big layout for a cathedral - trying to build it exactly as it was in the scenario. But I 're-used' it for two other scenarios on the weekend that had church elements in it and that didn't actually matter that much how the church looked like as it was a single encounter with enough space.

Brilliant! I too use boards to layout individual rooms/encounters on, but never thought about the strips to keep it all from sliding around. Consider this idea stolen!!!

Currently us it for Star Wars: Saga Edition

Have used it for 3.5, and 3rd, Star Wars RCR. While I have played and run some 4th haven't used it for that as I am running D&DEncounters at our store, and it is just to much of a pain to lug it all there... However I may use it for the final encounter...

Primarily for 3.5/Pathfinder and 4e but I could see using it for Earthdawn
at some point.

I sometimes use my sci-fi stuff for terrain when playing AT-43.

I started with DF one year ago with D&D 3.5, and now I'm playing with Pathfinder.
to be honest I'm still searching a better way to use DF stuff..

the problem, is that I and my group, we don't like to much "hack and slash" game, and we like instead roleplaying game (we started 20 years ago with AD&D)..that means that we can play with fun for one full night without any combat..
we like combats, but spending 2-3 nights just to move through few rooms it's not so funny for us...this is due to the fact that combats in new editions of D&D are really really slow..that means that I don't like to put too many fights consecutevely...so I like small setup..and I use big setup very unfrequently..
another reason I found big setup problematic, is that both dungeon master and players risk to be less free in their choices.
the players risk to be affected by what they can see..even if an area is covered, they can understand something about the adventure and about the DM plans, and the DM that spent a lot of time to build the setup will be inclined to force that the players go in certain direction...and that's not good if you are a lover of roleplaying game.
there are a lot of trick to reduce these kind of problems and I always use them, but some problems still remains.

Have you considered using the DF for location tracking in a complex roleplaying situation?

For example, if you have a mystery going on in a large house, where keeping track of who is where, when, then a DF set-up is a good way to do that. You might use a timetable or flowchart to move the NPCs, but only have them on the table when a PC is in the same room. No combat, but plenty of use for the DF layout.

Endar,

You and I are on the same wavelength. My worry is that, even covered, my players will still "see" the flow of the adventure. I think I too will steal Thod's idea of the boards. And I agree about the roleplaying. My players spent most of a recent session roleplaying at the tailor shop vs. adventuring. Of course we also all started back with AD&D so it's in the blood.

I have used the cavern stuff as terrain when playing Warlord from Reaper Miniatures. Works and looks great!
