Here is a report of my experience regarding the boats available at Shifting Lands (www.shiftinglands.com/). First off, I don't think Shifting Lands is a company per se. It is more like a blog maintained by an enthusiast miniaturist (Gerard Boom; gerard dot boom at kpnmail dot nl) who happened to have sculpted a few beautiful ships and who is kind enough to offer them for sale, for quite cheap frankly. Go check out the other cool projects he has been working on!

I contacted Gerard in July 2011 (twice) and once in August. 6 weeks later, he finally answered. Then, I asked for the price of a few ships and he answered 1 week later. Then, I ordered a few of them and he then sent me an invoice only 2-3 weeks later. I guess the downside of dealing with someone who works for fun more then for money is slow service... but let me tell you, it is pretty much worth the wait!!!

Shipping of up to 6 medium size ships to the US costs 25$. To make this shipping worth it, I ordered 2 merchant vessels (25 Euros each), 2 medium-sized boats (10 Euros each) and 2 Row boats (5 Euros each). Gerard being quite generous threw in a few submarines of his design in the lot that I find very gnomish as well as a few resin casts of freight. I am in the process of painting everything and I'll show it when I'm done.

Regarding his biggest ship (The Buccaneer), I did not order it because Gerard told me he does not like to cast it anymore (I guess because the casting is quite demanding/costly and his mold might be fast deteriorating). I must say that I pretty much regret not acquiring this huge ship given the beauty of the sculpts of the ships I acquired. Gerard is supposed to contact me if ever he casts it again.

Any update on this?

I contacted him awhile back but I haven't heard from him.

Last time I contacted him, it was at: gerard.boom@kpnmail.nl

Unfortunately, I think Gerard is just a resin decor enthusiast and he is not really running a serious business. He's offering his boats as a courtesy for all of us but does not do it with any profit in mind. That's why he sells them so cheap and answers his emails slowly. Just keep asking him patiently and kindly each 2 weeks or so and I'm pretty sure he'll get back to you, as he did with me.

Best of Luck & Patience!

I had to bump this thread, because these are the best ships I've seen offered out there for 28 mm. I wish there was a company offering these lovely ships/boats. Perhaps a company out there should see about paying him for the rights to his lovely molded ships. wink wink nudge nudge ;)

jgardner44, Contact him by email and be patient if you want some Shifting Land boats. I did just that 1 year ago and I love them: www.dwarvenforge.com/forum?func=view&catid=10&id=44396

jericho, any news about your experience with him?

By the way, there's no way a modular system of boats can give results as seamless and beautiful as those boats!

Yes! I forgot to mention this. I received several ships from him and they were all beautiful. I painted two and I will post pictures this week sometime.

Thanks Biowizard. I will try getting some for him as soon as my budget allows. I'm currently saving up for DF catacombs and hellscape #2 pre-orders ;).

I'm very excited that I have some shifting land boats being shipped to me. Can any one recommend a good painting method for this ships.

Has anyone else found some good ships out there? I know that I'd like to find the disney pirate ship to convert, but I haven't found much luck hunting it down. I think they might be out of production.

I just found another supplier of boats for fantasy RPGs: stores.lrterrain.com/-strse-Accessories-cln-Boats/Categories.bok

They are cheap, they seem to come already painted (not sure about that...) and they have a clear 1 inch grid sculpted in them. The only downside is that the sculpt quality seems quite inferior in terms of craftsmanship to the ones made by Shifting Lands... but you get what you pay for! This is probably the best solution for gamers afraid to learn how to do proper dry brushing.

Thanks for this post everyone, actually found what im looking for!

I am actually in the process of making a purchase of boats from shifting lands and he does offer the boats painted on request for commission!

Also his turnaround time from order - casting - painting - sending the items is around a week for me! Thats actually seemingly fast!

bought several submarines and row boats, one pimped medium, and one merchant boat!
