TOPIC: Casting from the Spellbook

Casting from the Spellbook 3 Years, 8 Months ago
Dungeons & Dragons question about the Wizard class...

Can a wizard cast spells from a spellbook, and how does that work?

Does he have to take 15 minutes to two hours preparing, or can he cast it immediately?
Does it use a spell slot, or is it a freebie?
Does the spell remain in the book, or does it disappear like a scroll?

I'm mainly interested in the 3.5/Pathfinder answer, but I'm a little curious about the 4.0 answer too.
Homebrew rulings also welcome.

In 3.5 you cannot cast directly from a spellbook.

However, in my campaign I allow it. It works like a scroll, and so takes 1 standard action and takes up no spell slots. However, when finished, the spell disappears from the book leaving the page(s) blank!

Hmm...

I think my wizard needs a "field spellbook" full of scrolls, maybe two or three copies of every spell in the "master spellbook".

A bit pricey, but probably worth every copper bit.

Very pricey, considering a 3rd level spell costs 300gp to scribe and a 3rd level spell and 24 hours time. In my Ptolus game, things happen so quickly, the wizards never have all the time they would like to scribe spells and craft items.

Alternately, you could say it entirely consumes the page, so that they'd have to go through the trouble and expense of buying another book etc.

The character concept is specifically that the wizard is a spell researcher and tinkerer with item creation feats (scrolls and wondrous items at the very least, potions and constructs if the GM is amenable), so would only be used in a game that was going to be paced such that there would be chances to use those feats.

As for the book, I seem to recall that spells on scrolls don't take up the same amount of space that spells in a spellbook do -- a single scroll can hold multiple low-level spells, which implies that the spell disappears but the paper (and other spells) remain. Even if spells do take one page per spell level the book is a hundred or so pages long, so using up a page or three at a time won't ruin the entire book. And it might be interesting to research a way to enchant a spellbook so that using up the spell on the page doesn't destroy the page, allowing the page to be en-scrolled again.

As for the expense -- if the character starts out at a higher level, there might be enough "starting" money to finance such a book. Or there might be sufficient treasure to finance it. But if it doesn't work out then it doesn't work out.

--------------

Another question.

If a wizard character wanted to be able to create constructs (homunculi) but didn't want to craft magic weapons and armor, would you (as a GM) waive the CMWA prerequisite for the Craft Construct feat?

Yes, I would, though I might also limit the contructs to Homunculi and not allow combat constructs like Golems.

Exactly what I want my wizard to make! All I need is a GM as reasonable as you...
