I agree with Crazyscotsman that some company (Reaper being a strong possibility) will pick up the mantle and greatly expand their line of pre-painted plastics. And on another positive note, WotC said they will continue to create minis for other lines (I'm guessing Heroscape and their board games like Ravenloft) as well as their limited edition line. Better than nothing at all I guess. Here's to the hope of them finishing their chromatic dragons line someday soon.

Sadly, my impression (based on what they've done for Heroscape and Ravenloft so far) is that they won't be "creating" minis at all, whatever they've said or hinted at. They have a large stockpile of molds of minis, and I can't imagine they'd want to spend money for new ones when they can keep pumping out those. A lot of customers won't have them already, anyway, so it's not the worst idea in the world. But for crazy completist (or near-completist) collectors like me, it means that there won't be anything interesting.

Shadbelly,
You make an interesting point when you say "...maybe Stefan can buy the rights..." especially since that may lead to Dwarven Forge having to go public. How many would invest in such an undertaking?

My guess it that Hasbro will let the D&D brand die (sooner or later) and then simply squat on the rights and we will have no actual D&D game in production for the first time since its creation.

I just made that exact prediction to a friend. We won't get any official, explicit "D&D is canceled" notice -- it won't officially die. New product will simply be on "hiatus," with perhaps a threadbare website being maintained for a few years. And then either one day there will be a new release, or there won't be.

Seems the most realistic thing to expect -- no reason to alienate potential customers by broadcasting the death of the game, essentially encouraging them to leave the hobby or get dedicated to something new like Warhammer or WoW. Just put things on hiatus, make it seem like there will be new product "as soon as possible," and wait. In theory, until it seems like there's a way to make it profitable again -- but no resources will be expended trying to figure out a way to do that.

sigh.

I have the impression, that you guys seem to be surprised by this development. I live in germany and to me this was predictable. WotC didn't really do anything to encourage young people starting with roleplaying as a hobby in the last years. Plus the new 4E really is a copy of WoW as pen and paper which really pissed off a lot of the 'older' guys here. So, the situation is like this:
Old guys change to Pathfinder because they are angry and since those were the ones to introduce new players to the hobby this leads to less sales. In addition, why play a game that is a copy of a game on the computer? It's way easier to just click some icons than to have to read tons of stuff (teenagers generally don't like to read much around here) and then have to 'click' some imaginary icons.
I am sorry if this sounds a bit negative, but I was really annoyed by the new 4E and currently DM a very successful Pathfinder campaign (people drive 1.5 hours to my house to be part in it). I also own tons of D&D Miniatures and still am missing a lot, but I have by now given up hope, ever getting my hands on all I still need.
Luckily, I have the best 3D Dungeon there is to use those Minis and my HUGE GW collection helps a lot too.

I think the biggest disappointment for me was that the chromatic dragon set is not complete. We will never get a gargantuan green dragon.....

They will not be doing sets, but they stated they will continue to do their limited line, so that green dragon is still a distinct possiblity...as is the long-ago announced but never released dracolich.
