TOPIC: What about storage?

What about storage? 3 Years, 10 Months ago
This question is aimed at all of you big DF collectors out there. What have you found to be the best way to store your DF sets and why?

If you use containers, a few pics would be great, and also I would appreciate if you told me where you purchased the containers.

I am starting to generate some sizeable wife threat and am concerned that I will end up pulling aggro soon if I do not find a better way to store my many DF sets that conserves more space. I thought I would reach out to you guys for ideas.

Thanks in advance.

The never ending question. I have not found a good answer to it. I used to store my sets in 3 pretty big cupboards, all stacked and ready to be used. I still do this for some sets, but the volume of 40+ sets made it impossible at some time to do this with every set. When theres nothing else stored in the cupboards of the living room than Dwarven Forge certain people begin to look at you funny. And when, for example, the question comes up where the 25 big scented Candles are and you answer with "they had to go, the new Den of Evil Sets have arrived" the person you are talking to might not be as understanding as one might wish.

I used different form of packets during the years, right now I use a mixture of big, stackable plastic storage boxes like these: www.office365.co.uk/im/pim/287080.jpg and the original boxes for things I don't need every time (like the RotA Sets) and use half the space in the cupboards for the "every gaming session pieces".

Of course, if you are like me and you use the new free space for the storage of over 1000 painted and sorted miniatures, there will still be some amount of aggro from certain persons...

(Who the hell really needs scented candles everyday? But to open any cabinet door and just see needly assorted miniatures or dwarven forge pieces, that really puts a smile on a gamers face.)

(On second thought I think I might be a little bit addicted. Is there something like Dwarven Forge Anonymous?) ;)

I have mine in 6-drawer plastic storage cases, like this:

www.officedepot.com/a/products/551048/Office-Depot-Medium-Plastic-Storage-Cart/

I lined the bottom of each drawer with foam. I labeled the kind of pieces that are in each drawer, e.g. "Short Passages" and printed out a photo of the pieces that are in each drawer. The photo sits on top of the pieces so I can remember how I put them in the drawer.

The nice thing is each drawer is just the right height to hold the foam plus the Dwarven Forge piece. The down side is they aren't super-portable if I need to take my pieces somewhere.

I use something very similar to Brettking that was recommended by BIG time collectors. Its a Sterlite 7 drawer craft cart that I got from Target:

www.amazon.com/Sterilite-7-Drawer-Craft-Cart-White/dp/B000MQ62IG

Drawers have lids and fit the pieces very well. Its also MUCH easier to get at the pieces to build stuff.

Here is what I have, custom made by my uncle. Optimized to fit a huge number of DF sets in there.
