Reflections on recent activity in the forums.... 3 Years, 9 Months ago
Recently, someone showed up and posted a few things in a way that reminded some of us old-timers of someone who's been gone awhile. Some of us are kinda curious as to whether the guy actually WAS the old-timer. I don't think he was -- if it had been, it would mean that the guy was actually legitimately insane, instead of just merely socially awkward.

But one thing that came up was "Do you guys honestly never have problems with each other except for this ONE GUY?"

And it's funny -- yeah, we haven't. It's pretty much just been that one guy. And then, like six years later (how long HAS it been, anyway?) this other guy who may or may not have been the same guy.

I'm sure most people here are familiar with what a cesspool the traditional internet forum can be, and I think it's really awesome that our community is so respectful, engaged, and constructive. It really is nearly unique in the online world. And it's all the more impressive given that this is a place for gamers, themselves a crowd with a tendency towards Asperger's like social dysfunction. ;)

I think it has something to do with Dwarven Forge, that fans of the product are generally so great to talk to.

So -- just giving us all a round of applause, and Stefan and Jeff and everyone else who makes this a great community.

Woot!

Whether it was or wasn't, I'm going to gently suggest that we old-timers stop invoking the name(s) of This One Guy when he pops up again. Whether we think it is actually him or just a kindred spirit.

For one thing, it has always been a hot-button. The last couple of times, he/they seem to have legitimately tried to be polite and respectful at first, but lost it when compared to the previous log-in name(s).

For another, anyone who has read my posts knows that I am neither perfect nor blameless. But I hope that all of you, my fellow forum-goers, will judge me by my most recent post, and not on particular post(s) posted in the past.

Invoking the name could be taken as provocation, no matter who it really is. If we are going to hold someone accountable for their (past?) online behavior, we shouldn't stack the deck against them by baiting them. Let them succeed or fail on their own.

Finally, I think the individual(s) in question is (are) in a great deal of pain. Let's not add to it, not even slightly, not even by accident.

None of this is to say that we need to share that pain, or suffer insults or condescension or anything else from anyone on any forum. If you see a post that you feel crosses a line, I recommend that you ignore it in the thread, and I encourage you to report it to the moderator.

Let's let sleeping dogs lie, and retire This One Guy's previous username(s) once and for all.

Sorry if this was too After-School-Special, or Anythingier-Than-Thou.
And, yes, I am aware of the irony of a post like this coming from me.

The irony JackAttack is that I did report this thread for the very provocation that it is after Law started it.
The powers that be here evidently felt this thread was just fine so I will enter the fray as the forum newby I am.

While reading Jack's posting, I had an epiphany.
You guys need this person you throw around at people.
He is your "Boogyman".
Does not matter if what he said was true, false or indifferent, the old-timers here have turned him into their threat against any possible future "bad" behavior by whomever.
This poster was allegedly so horrible, so disruptive, so not cool, so not part of the REAL clique of these forums that he has become this forum's "Frankenstein's Monster", a "Boogyman" - a caricature used to scare the kiddies into being good while in this playground.

I have to ask, "Does this forum really need that?"
What is so wrong that a "Boogyman" is needed?

This thread is far beneath the craftsmanship I see in the product.
Kill the thread.
Remove it before it does any damage to the product.

Words could always cut deeper than a battle axe of troll bane, at least in my home game. I don't pretend to know the entire history of these exchanges but it's obvious at some point it got personal.

I arrived here in 2006 and I don't know what you are talking about but it doesn't sound good. It's like the old story with the mapping program I believe.
Now you woke up my curiosity ...

Yeah, I agree. No reason to bring it up. Didn't mean to cause a fire.

The point of my post wasn't to insult User - it was just that his remark that it seemed implausible that we'd never had a problem with anyone but this one poster made me realize, "Wow, but it's true!"

I don't think we need a boogeyman for the board. That's the point of my post. We don't have problems here. And we've had tons of new folks come round and always feel welcome. I was only trying to post a cheerleader message about how great this place is, that conflicts like that are so rare. I mean, it's remarkable that it's been SO LONG since we've had that trouble.

Just meant to be a happy thought, not a witch-burning. But I can see how it might have been taken that way. Sorry for that.

All you have to do is go back and read a few years of old postings like I did HQF.

Law, that person was just whom the conflict circled around.
Mighty Zug was certainly an overly willful participant and so were some of the minotaurs still present; they were certainly having "fun" at his expense.
The extremely kind & courteous "bait and pound" forum tactic was used considerably on this guy from what I saw in my reading of the old postings.
The guy would miss that the posting was just a bait, respond in what appears to be with honest indignation and certain posters here would just go to town on him.
And allegedly HE was the problem!?!
I can see that right away. :^(

Sorry, I just hate social bullies since I was the target of them myself growing up.
A core of 12 or so decided I would be the perfect target of their "self-worth building" activities.
Experiences I will never forget and am definitely sensitive to Law.

Well, any way you slice it, we've had years and years of enjoyable forum posting and mutual respect here. I hope that continues and there continues to be no need for snarky, condescending nor defensive posts. We all love gaming, and love and appreciate the hard work, craftsmanship and excellence that Stefan & Jeff put into Dwarven Forge. We love sharing out set-ups, gaming experiences, questions, imaginings and inventions - otherwise, we wouldn't be here, right?

I hope you guys know how important this Forum is to Stefan and Dwarven Forge. He is first, and foremost, an artist who needs feedback from his patrons. He spends a lot of effort worrying about his collectors, and many decisions come down to "what would the collectors want?". This Forum gives Stefan the great benefit of helping to understand how he can make his collectors happy.

So...thank you for giving us your feedback and for giving Stefan a sense of community for his wonderful work.
