Need a Pirate Ship. Any suggestions? 4 Years, 4 Months ago
Hello all,

I'm planning some future adventures with my party that will involve traveling by sea and dealing with pirates. I have several grid layouts (both black and white, and color) but I thought about using a toy ship and "griding it off" for D&D 4e combat encounters. I searched through Amazon to look for something suitable but haven't found anything great yet. I'm not much of a craftman so building my own really isn't any option.

Any ideas??

Great question -- I wish I had a better answer. I really look forward to seeing replies from other people -- I've seen great ships in some people's layouts, and I'd love to find out where to get one myself.

If you want something adequate but imperfect, there's at least a few Zizzle ships. One is much smaller than the other --

(detailed review and more pics here: www.mwctoys.com/REVIEW_052906c.htm)

It is about four inches long, not really suitable for any gaming on the ship itself, but adequate as set dressing or to track where a ship is.

The second is much larger, about ten or 11 inches long, with more available space on the inside:

Sadly, I can't find any good pics online to demonstrate the room you get with this one. I'll keep hunting.

These are decent ships, but I can tell they aren't really what you're looking for. Good luck!

A cheap but time consuming option is to build one from cardboard using a product such as this WWG one.

It's very cool once built, but will take some time. Pics:

I was going to come in and suggest the Maiden from WWG but Thraug beat me to it.

It is easy to put together, and sturdy. Mine lasted for years before a cat peeped on it.

After some surfing I was able to find these ships, but I can't tell if any of them are the same product or what their dimensions are. The pics are links to the product.

Claims to be 33" long!! I can't find this for sale anywhere. The Black Pearl.

Might this be the same one? It doesn't look like it. Pirates Of The Carribean 3: Black Pearl with Shipwreck Cove Playset by Zizzle:

Pirates Of The Carribean 3: Pirate Armada Empress with Singapore Playset:

Pirates of the Carribean: Pirate Fleet Empress with Sao Feng, Pirate King Elizabeth Swann, and Tai Huang:

I can't find the dimensions for any of these last 3. I THINK those figures are 3" tall. Maybe that help figure out the size of the ships?

I thought about getting that world works ship but it looks harder than hell to put together. There are tons of model ships on ebay but it looks as though you are gonna have to drop a few hundred dollars for a decent one that's big enough.

That cardboard ship is the most suitable surface I've seen for gaming, but it looks quite difficult to construct. You have to print out the pieces and then glue them together? I think I would find multiple ways to screw that up!

I was looking at the Pirates of the Caribbean toys and some of them looked like they might work. I also found this model, but the deck is quite small:

20" long is far too small. Just got one that's 22" long off ebay and when I got it in it was so small that standard size minis look like giants on the deck. I think for a "pirate" type ship you would need at least a 30" ship. A viking style longship of 20" or so does work though. I have one that is about 22" and another that's about 18" that work pretty well. Here is a link to one:

Is there a place to find the dimensions of another ship on the site you mentioned? Do they come with sails?

The ship I bought did not come with a sail. It did come with a mast and I bought some material to make a sail but I haven't got around to finishing it. I don't know about the dimensions of the other ships but, if you get a viking ship the rowers are somewhere between the scale of most minis and ral partha making them too small for my purposes. When I order my next ship I'll skip the rowers and save the $15.

The Maiden (the WWG ship) is actually very easy to put together. I did it in two nights when i first started doing card stock. And if you are worried about it, you can do the "easy way"...

Just make the decks, I was running the Savage Tide for D&D sometime back, and did the Maiden in full for the PC's ship, but the ones they fought against in a number of cases like pirates etc were just the upper decks so people could move about between and on the ships. That can be done very easy.

The other benefit of the Maiden is you can make a lot of different sizes and types of ships from one set. The above is a cut down version i made to give a different look as a bad guy ship.

How exactly does the cardstock work? Do you need to print it out on special paper? I've never used it before.

Thank you!
