As a GM, how long do you plan for your campaigns to last in real time?

Do you run lots of one or two night adventures that eventually become a campaign?
Do you plot a campaign that will last months or years?
Do you just leave it open-ended and keep going for as long as it lasts?

I look forward to hearing from y'all.

For me, i choose a bunch of commercial adventures that i have in my collection and align them one after the other into a campaign arch. I create the overall campaign story and modify the modules to fit my story.

that's how i always do my campaigns.

I always run campaign that have one large overarching story arch, with many smaller ones and others that get *created* out of the players actions as the story progresses. It usually a mix of published stuff I've borrowed from and woven together an dmy own stuff.I've never been one much for one shots or disconnected stuff. My campaigns run for years. The current Ptolus campaign has been going on for just over two years of steady every other week gaming and the party of 7 has just hit level 12.

Ptolus by Monte Cook is really quite an incredible setting btw. I highly recommend it.

I ran a campaign that lasted from 1996-2004, once a month for 5-6 hours, players went from level 1 to 20 in the 8 years.

I just leave mine open ended until most of the party dies all at once. If just one or two pcs die I let those players make a new character at the same level their pc was when they died.

I started playing again about a year ago after taking about 15 years off of gaming. I was just a kid back then so our "campaigns" were all over the place. Currently, I'm DMing a campaign that's been made up of WotC pre-printed adventures, interspersed with my own touches. I'll be making my own storylines soon, using the pre-published stuff I used as a jumping-off point. At our current rate of one session per month (sometimes less when schedules get really full), we'll be done in 2-3 years. Good lord, I hope I can keep their interest that long...

Make something idiot-proof and someone will just turn around and make a better idiot.

If it is an established group that I know well and what they each like in a game, along with what they dislike and I have played with them quite a bit I do a grand advneture and have a few open ends that will close in 2 or 3 sessions if they like so they can feel like they are doing something while they work to the bigger prize. That way they get excited about teh small quests and not discouraged to think they will not see teh meet and potatoes until 2-4 years from now. (We play 2x a month for 5-6 hours).

If it is a new group i do a couple one off adventures 1, 2 sessions at most and watch the dynamic of the group and the players and what they like and dislike. I then leave some open ends or tie back to an earlier expirience so the players begin to learn of hte bigger adventurer.

Lastly if we are in a long campaign I often will play a silly one off compaign for a single night so the players can use different characters then what they have been playing for 2 years or whatever.

We play every Sunday (almost!), alternating between two campaigns run by two different Dungeon Masters, myself and Blair.

The campaigns have gone on for 4 years or until the DM decides they want to have fun with something else. Our players are great in that they're willing to just go with it. A TPK is an excellent reason to start something new. I am sort of sad I don't get to play Ree Kee the Viole(n)t anymore though...
