Before Or After? A DM Question... 4 Years, 10 Months ago
This question goes out to all the DM's out there that use Dwarven Forge in their RPG games:

Do you set up the room (encounter) first and then describe the scene (text box)? or
Do you describe the room (text box) and then set up the DF pieces?

Just got my first couple of sets and planning on using it this weekend. Do not have enough pieces to build the whole dungeon, only enough to build one room, or one encounter at a time.

Thanks!!!

If you can only build one encounter at a time, I'd build the area with DF, then use the read alot text to highlight any areas of intrests, like those 25 orcs in the room that are trying to kill them.

I dont do either, really. For years I've used a "script" that look a lot like a movie script (you can find something similar in Extreme Dungeon Master, I think that's the right title; also in Dungeon Master for Dummies, the second one). If a party opens a door, for example, I read that portion of the room script they can actually see, then reel forward as they move in.

HOWEVER....I'm buying a nanny-camera and Ii plan to give players the television view. I won't let them actually see the dungeon at all...except through the tiny camera, which is about 1" high (with a cable, of course). 15mm or 25mm figures are about that height, so as they say they move forward, so does their camera. I've experiemented with it with a more expensive cam, and it works very well.

Build (or slap down if I've pre-built on a slab of plywood) first then describe.

I usually lay out, then describe. But my collection's grown a lot this year.

If I could only do a room at a time, I think I'd describe first, and only lay down the room when combat begins. That way, I wouldn't give away which rooms have combat vs. rooms that are less threatening. Keep 'em guessing. :)

As a DM I usually set up key encounters or rooms with the DF pieces, prior. Then i'll cover them, or at least I do not stock the set-up with any creatures yet. When the adventuring party gets there, I reveal the encounter to the party, as I read the description and then add any monsters.

Hope that helps...

Good tips so far!

It looks like most of you build, then describe. Will try this method and see how that works out.

Thanks!

To be clear - I build as players can see the new area, usually describving as I go do save time. When the camera comes on line, i'll build then use cam to show the new area.

I had a GM who described the ancient, ruined temple to us, let us go inside, then surprised us with a rhinocerous beetle the size of a Sherman tank. He then let us build the temple with the DF available in two boxes.
