I stumbled on this site today. Pretty cool looking custom sci-fi set up. He gives a bit of tuturial as well. I thought some of you sci-fi buffs may appreciate it.

Enjoy. :)

Very cool. Thanks for sharing. I like the layout and the muted earth tones of the facility.

My sets: 20x Sci-fi starters, 7x Alpha's, 3x Gamma's, 4x Beta's, 6x Passage; 3x ROTA, 3x ROTA II; and more Dungeon and Caverns sets than I feel like counting (or want my wife counting).

I think I remember seeing that over at the Hirst Arts page, my biggest problem with this style of layout is that it is so freaking non functional as a real place.
I always have had problems with layouts like this in D&D for adventures (if they aren't caves) becuase for all of that space, there are only 8 rooms (with 9 squares in each room for a 72 sq of room space, and more than 150 in corridor. There is more than double the space in corridors than rooms. It's like the old probelm with so many Sci-fi TV shows and movies (All of the Star Trek, Andromeda, Stargate, Dr. Who, Red Dwarf, BSG, Blake's 7, B5, Aliens, Galaxy Quest, Saturn 3, , Star Wars, Black Hole, Silent Running etc) where they just have ships full of corridors as people walk around the ship having conversations moving from set to set. This is an excellent example of that where it's all corridors with almost no rooms. Why would anyone in real life make a building that is more connecting passages than anything else?

It doens't look real, it doesn't look functional, I don't like things like that.

If they did in in Star ** (**Wars / Trek) it must be good. The Orthodoxy Police have been alerted. You will be terminated, Genghis Ska!

I tend to agree, although lots of corridors mean lots of opportunity for players to get lost....

I suppose everyone needs to draw their own line between "fun" and "realistic." For some, fun and realism are the same thing. For others, they may as well be opposites. Personally, if it means my players might get lost, all the better...

Oh, and it looks AMAZING. Nice job!

I think this may be one of the most beautiful Hirst Arts builds I've come across. The build is interesting and the painting is superb! As for the too many corridors "problem", call me old fashioned but I leave realism at the door when Space Hulk is involved. And don't forget that in any good sci-fi show/movie, all the unrealistic stuff is explained away with one or two lines of dialogue!

Genghis, you'll have to agree the modelling is great. For a tournament layout, I think this works very well. I probably wouldn't do it for a dungeon crawl/SF RPG at ome either, for reasons Genghis outlines, but what a great piece of work!

Thanks for showing us, dndgamer.

It's a Space Hulk layout, and as such it's perfect for Space Hulk as the game is designed that way, realism or no realism. The builder, VitruvianZeke at the HA forum, is active there, as am I, happily building more Space Hulk boards than ever, toghether with some other addicts!

Although right now I'm busy with a board for HorrorClix/HeroClix - with a stronger emphasis on rooms and wider corridors, as I'm done with my own complete Space Hulk board.

Heehhe I posted that right before I went off on a work trip, and had spotty access to the internet afterward so never saw the response.

Yeah it is a very nicely designed model set and may work out great for Space Hulk, but maybe that's one of the reasons I never jumped on Space Hulk as the "ships" never made any sense, they were litterly an excuss to have a location to have a fight in. In almost all of my setups for waht ever (even the contests) I try to have a sense of realism and function in them. To me they just look better if they make "sense" on some level. This makes sense only on the "it's a game" level. It just detracts something from it for me.

Add in that i really wasn't happy when i posted that due to the work obligations and I probably came off a bit pissy.

eh never post while in a bad moode ;)

I admit it is a very cool looking build for walls etc, nicely detailed, and having most of the same HA sets, know the work that went into it. But knowing all of those things and seeing the dungeons built with HA with the fieldstone, I just have to say it looks completly artifical to me, and knowing what can be done makes it as a setup something I don't like that much. I'm not a Space Hulk fan so it leaves me wanting as the idea of a "random series of corridors" just doesn't seem that functional... Eh it's just me.
