I've never been to an rpg con and I'm thinking I might go to either Origins or GenCon this summer. Anyone have any suggestions as to which is better to attend?

Origins is about 3 hours away and GenCon would be about 5 or 6 I think. The drive really isnt the issue. I was curious as to which one would be more fun to attend! Anyone been to both?

Went to GenCon this year after a 20 year hiatus - wow! and WOW! - had a real blast. If you go, make SURE you don't miss NASCRAG!!!

I've been going to both for the past few years - they are both a lot of fun, but slightly different. If non-RPG's are more your thing (ie. you more enjoy boardgames, mini's, etc), then Origins tends to have a wider variety of that whereas Gencon is more RPG focused. That's not to say that these things are not present however!

Gencon is also quite a bit bigger - both in exhibition space, and sheer number of people, whereas Origins has a more "local con" feeling ... Also, different companies tend to have a bigger showing at one or the other - such as Origins is the big Hackmaster gathering for Kenzer Co, whereas only Gencon has True Dungeon 8-).

Some other non-game related things to consider also; the website, forum, and online event registration for Origins is horrible - they haven't been able to get their act together with that for the past several years. Gencon however, has a nice website and very active forum, BUT since the event registration is so publicized, and people expect it very much in advance, things sell out quickly - ESPECIALLY very popular events (True Dungeon routinely sells out in a matter of hours). Origins however, you can often get games you want to play in much easier.

I have fun at both and enjoy the different things about both.

I have been going to Gen Con since back in the UW-Parkside days (1982) and I must say it is my favorite among the two cons -- but Origins is cool, too. Dwarven Forge has a booth at both -- so either way you win!

Gen Con also has this cool event called "True Dungeon" which is a 2-hour full-sized dungeon walk-thru team event that I hear is pretty cool. I have always wanted to play, but I never get the chance.

The best part about going to either of the Cons is the chance to meet a lot of new friends -- and to see so many cool gamers in one place. I am from a rural area, so it is sweet to see more gamers gathered together than could be taken out with one hand grenade.

So when does the registration for GenCon start? Do you have to preregister for every game that is played there or can you just walk up and start playing d&d at a table if there is room? Needless to say, I've never been to a con before!

I've never had a chance to play either. Somehow I think if you played you would always make it past the final room.

Registration for Gencon hasn't started yet - they said more information would be released in December, but I haven't heard anything yet. Usually, registration starts in Feburary for the con itself, but then one has to register for the events seperately at a later time.

For something like D&D, you really don't need to register as there are (literally) hundreds of tables running throughout the con, and there they make a big effort to seat everyone who wants to play; the same for the other big publishers and the games.

For the popular independent games, they can sell out pretty quickly.
