Buying DF products and shipping them to the UK/Europe? 5 Years ago
I wonder if anyone can tell me the most cost effective way to purchase DF products and get them shipped to the UK

I looked on the forum and found people who despaired at the cost ... but I wondered if there were optimal content sizes etc ..

Such as 4 boxes is better than 2 ... do people share costs and do joint orders .... any particular courier .... can it be repackaged smaller and does that help .. etc etc.

Thanks

depends mainly on the weight of the ordered products.

Basic rule is: one package filled up to the max is the cheapest way of shipping.
If you order too much then the package will besplit and p&p will increase.

You can see that by playing araound with the shopping cart by adding and removing products (the system is really good for that).

Basically one packet fits 2-3 large sets (Room and passage i.e.) and some small stuff or
4-6 smaller sets, you will have to try out when you order.

The cheapest way is - get it shipped to the US and pick it up while on business travel. Didn't work for me lately as I haven't been in the US for >2 years - before that I was there at least once.

In regard to shipping:
The cost goes up steep for the first 2 boxes and then plateaus off.

For the UK you have one pecularity - you pay a flat fee of £13.50 for each parcel - handling fee from Parcelforce. Also max. parcel sizes seem to differ between countries.

As Green Knight says - up to three single boxes fit in one packaging box. But nothing else ! fits in there. If you buy 3 boxes and some small extras - it probably will arrive in two parcels. I had this issue with some 'free' bits earlier this year as a standard offer was - buy three sets - get one unique piece extra.

So what to expect as cost?

You have the DF cost of the items
Add shipping - you can play with that in your cart without making a commitment. Fill the cart - just don't proceed to check out different shipping scenarios.
On top of that is £13.50 handling fee per parcel you receive - NOT per order. as stated above - a parcel fits 2 sets sure - three likely - but not a bit more.
Also you have to add VAT - until end of the year this is 15% for the cost of the items AND for shipping cost. Yes - you heard right - VAY is also paid on shipping cost.

All in all - over the thump - it's approx. the cost in pound what you see them on sale in dollar. I can check for exact values. Yes - it hurts.

I do currently have one of each of the RotA sets you saw at Dragonmeet and one of the Hell of Evil sets at home in the loft - unopened. I bought them as part of offers to get three boxes for $10 each less and to get some extra bits (painted hall, medaillon). As I got them with the $10 off and also got some free bits I might sell them on for a little bit less as I actually paid. But saving would depend on the dollar/pound exchange. When I calculated the cost last time I didn't bother to put them up for sale to anyone.

PS: I did once try to ship to a fellow board member, get it shipped cheaply using surface mail. It took six weeks, you had no tracking information while waiting for a box worth a few hundred dollar - and the US post office seems to have stopped surface mail. I did save a few pounds that way - but I realized how valuable tracking information is if you wait for a box with $500 merchandise. So I never tried again.
PPS: I also once (twice?) tried a shared shipment with Otherworld. You save a lot for two boxes (if everyone takes one) - beyond that savings are getting less. You also have the issue of delivery inside the UK. If you ship using Royal Mail it will eat up a good part of the saving. And with some promotional bits there is the issue - how do you split them up. If you have two collectors nearby it might work - but I haven't activly looked around to do this again lately. To a degree you could regard the offer above as an example of shared shipping. Just all the risk is mine until I sell it on. I once did sell a few sets to AfterBusiness in Germany - avoiding extra shipping as I could leave the stuff at my parents place for pick-up.
