There is hope for the next generation of gamers!

My son is 11 and is in middle school (6th grade). They have a lunch club program where the kids sign up for all kinds of different clubs. He wanted to have a D&D club but there wasn't one; so on his own initiative he found a teacher adviser and put together a proposal and very nice brochure for club day.

Get this: on club day he got 47 kids to sign up for the D&D club!

Can you believe it? 47 kids! And his generation is supposed to be too attached to video and computer games to be interested in real RPGs.

First day of the club is tomorrow -- he's been up this evening making and printing out pre-made characters and strategizing about how to divide the kids into groups with different DMs.

I'll have to pick a day and set up some Dwarven Forge as a special treat for his club. Now there's some parent volunteering I can get excited about!

Woo hoo!

That is pretty awesome. I don't have any kids of my own, and the oldest of me nieces and nephews is coming up on 3, so I have awhile before real recruitment can begin. ;)

Hope you have a great time with that!

Purple--that's awesome. I am so happy to hear that a kid could take initiative like that and do something positive. So many stories about kids these days aren't so uplifting.

I ran a youth outreach program at a local library for almost two years for underprivileged kids who needed something to do after school. I set it up as a game club with a selection of games that had a strong academic focus. The games were teaching kids without them really realizing! Unfortunately we never got to the point where I could start up a D&D group but that was the plan.

You should be very proud of your son for what he did. It's a very heartening story to read (especially since it had such a tremendously positive response with the other kids!).

Regards,

My 4 year old daughter has started "wargaming" with me - I get an old, beat up 1980's lead dragon and she gets 4 or 5 old knight figures (painted pink and purple and red because those are her favourite colours of course). I "stomp" around with the dragon and when the dragon bumps into a knight we both roll a large D6. Whoever rolls the highest wins. Of course she always ends up winning as she effectively has 4 or 5 lives and I only have one.

Classic stuff!

That should be a mandatory game in all pre-schools & Kindergarden classrooms, then we'd really see our hobby explode!

Can't wait to play that with my daughter!

Stefan, that's awfully kind of you. My sons eyes opened as big as Emma Pillsbury's on Glee when he read that. He'll bring his camera to the next D&D lunch club and we'll post some pix.
