A little while ago when 4th edition came out i started playing it with a little gaming group. Now I just found out about the pathfinder rpg and what it does with the 3.5 ruleset. I haven't played 3.5, but played baldurs gate 1+2 a lot and liked that ruleset. Has anybody played both and cares to share some expiriences with the game systems? I just invested in the 4th edition but am in doubt to get the pathfinder corebook also.

Crimlock,

I was a 1st ed player (Not so much but that was my intro to DND)
I played AD&D 2nd ed quite a bit. For well over 10 years and got tired of teh min maxers so quit playing.

I jumped head over heels into 3.0 Liked it a lot but it had problems.

3.5 solved almost all problems. (Yes it could have been better but a few house rules and you are done arguing)

I was a big fan of 4.0 before it came out. I liked teh concepts. What turned me off was the implementation. I am not a 4th ed basher, I do not believe they dumbed down dnd or made it for the vid game gen I just think it is a new game. WOTC/Hasbro is exploring where they can take the game. I have played it but to date have not really enjoyed it as much as 3.5.

As for Pathfinder. I am looking forward to it very much. I have played 1 game and enjoyed it very much. I have loved their monthly modules and have play tested the beta game. Really cool stuff. I think that if WOTC woudl have took the concepts they wanted in 4 and added them to 3.5, used some pathfinder commen sense it probably would have been a system I played for the next 10 - 20 years.

Good Stuff.

I picked up Pathfinder at Gencon yesterday - the core rules book has incredible production values, and is quite hefty! (Basically, the 3.5 PH and DMG rolled into one).

It stays fairly true to the roots of 3.5, and so I suspect a lot of people who like 3.5 will like it; and those who don't like 3.5 prob also won't like it. My group's been doing 3.x since it came out and we have a good time.

May I also suggest looking into Hackmaster? They just released a new edition at Origins, and I like a lot of what they did. Many of the mechanics are what I've also house ruled into my games, and it feels like a more streamlined 1st and 2nd edition. They were also able to shed a lot of the parody/silliness that was required when they were working with WoTC.

Edit:
Link to an example of combat with the Knights of the Dinner Table: www.kenzerco.com/free_files/HMb/HMb_combat_example.pdf

A "walk-through": www.kenzerco.com/free_files/HMb/HMb_walkthrough_kodt_152.pdf

And quick start rules are available as well, but I can't seem to find them right now...

I played in two Pathfinder games at GenCon and REALLY grooved on the system. I have avodied 4e but from all I've heard & read the two systems are really quite different. You'll need to play both and see which you like best. I must echo Fu-Man-Chu's sentimnent that the Pathfinder book has really incredible productin value - a top notch beautful book!

I can't comment first hand on 4e, but I can say Pathfinder is lots of fun an VERY well tested ;-)

I have played 4th and do not like it.

I also purchased a copy at Gencon and think it has great potential. Soooo at our little convention up here in March I might host an event. One of Pazio's Modules to get them interested in it up here.

Thanks for the feedback.

I have ordered a copy 2 month ago via Amazon - but as I went the cheap route (free delivery and I'm in the UK) it hasn't arrived yet. I just went on holiday when the PDF came out - so the first day back (Monday) I downloaded the pdf to have a read in the train to London.
On my way back I went to the Orcs Nest - and to my suprise they had 4 copies left - well displayed with the whole cover viewable next to the 4ed books with only spines viewable. They told me - it was selling well and what I saw was all that was left.

On impulse I just bought one to support the FLGS - reckoning that I could either cancel Amazon or will find someone to give the book as a gift or sell it on to someone in my gaming group.

I'm approx. on page 50 (out of 576) and here are my impressions.

So far I really like it a lot. They have added some small twists here and there to 3.5 which I like a lot. An example is the wizard who either have a bonded object or his familiar via which he casts the spells. So it adds a free Masterwork item to him at the start. It allows him to cast one spell without preparation from his book - but if I'm not mistaken this is taken away from the daily spell allowance. You need to handle the object while casting - or incur disadvantages.

Here are the reasons I like these twists a lot:
They add to the role play flair (the wizards points his staff in the direction of the target / outstreched hand with his ring ... substitute the bonded object of choice). It adds a small bit of flexibility without doing too big a change to the 3.5 version. At the same time it adds a disadvantage (you can lose the item / might not be able to handle it in a certain situation - just think about being imprisoned and the item been taken away). And they try to keep balance.

Other small changes I like - the dwarf who has a base speed of 20 (unchanged) but keeps this speed even when encumbered or heavily loaded (no changes here to the other races).

Did they remove all the power munging ?

No - you will never achieve this - but as far as I saw reactions on the boards they tried (spiked chain) but players seem to be to inventive and will find loop holes no matter what.

Are characters more powerful as in 3.5. I think yes - a little bit. But so far I would say they tried to cut down excesses - and added in minor improvements here and there to add flair while making it more playable.

Yes there will be players who will try to optimize and get the best build possible. Just yesterday I read a thread how to build a Fighter level 20 with equipment worth < 1 million gold who would be able to take on a black dragon level 20 on his own.

Yes - the dragon would lose - but in my mind what the contributors missed is - as a GM what would stop me to allow the dragon to use 100K worth equipment in his hoard to counter / buff up the dragon - or allow the dragon 1 or two alternative feats / give him a level or two in a class which would make him stronger.

My monsters tend not to be the default from the book. Once a player complained - skeletons don't use bow according to the Monster Manual. I just pointed him to the DF minature I had used. Do you see the bow in his hand. Well - if he has a bow - he is able to use it - and even the rules back this up - there is nothing to stop you to apply rules like feats / skills / equipment to monsters as well.

The Monster Manual gives you a default - and I use it if I don't have time to alter it. But if I have a miniature with equipment - they rather use what the miniature has - not the default. Therefore a skeleton in chain mail and with a shield will have a different AC as one without.

But I deviated from the original thread. So yes - I can fully recomment Pathfinder if you like D&D 3.x It might be difficult (or expensive) to get the rulebook right now as it's sold out at most places. So why not spend $9.99 for the PDF to check it out yourself. If you don't like it - not too much money wasted - if you like it - well - I feel an electronic version is a great plus in addition to the book and with that price I'm willing to buy both.

I don't think you can have this question answered for you. It is a bit like asking people to advise you on which is better - chess or draughts? The only way is to play a game of both and see. I broadly agree with most of what most respondents have said here - If you liked 3.0/3.5 then go Pathfinder but I would still give 4ed a go. I have played every incarnation of D&D going and I like them all including 4.0. They're all just...... different.

The other option is for your group to diversify and one person buy and DM one system and someone else do the other. You can lend each other books?

Personally, I'm finding the 4E character generator to be very helpful, and that program itself is a big persuader that's keeping me in 4E. It makes creating and leveling up characters so easy. You still need to have some idea what you're looking for, so it doesn't take the place of rule books. But with the updates, you effectively have all of the class, ability, feat, and power information in ONE place. And that's very helpful.

My biggest complaint with 3/3.5 had nothing to do with mechanics, it was the sheer volume of product available. My players were constantly looking for new spells, feats, prestige classes, etc. and it was a pain to keep looking all that over.

Don't go over to the Dark Side just form the allure of the easy character generator software!

Try this for pathfinder:

And this for 3.5:

PCGen has the beta PF rules in already, only a matter of time until the final PF SRD makes it in there.

Having said that, I'll agree that the tools coming out on D&D Insider are extremely helpful, especially when generating the 100+ page adventure packs for KublaCon. Getting stat blocks out was one of the painful tasks. It is painful no longer.

When 4th ed came out last year, my group tryed it. But it just did not feel like the same DnD we all loved. We pretty much stuck with 3.5. I am liking what I see in Pathfinder alot.
