What size minis goes best with the DF products? 20mm? 25mm?

What size bases work best, not GW style, obviously. :P

Suggested manufactures for minis that go well with DF?

Kenneth,

If You Have followed any of the other Posts you may have Gathered that there is some Debate on this Very Issue... Therefore this is only MY opinion...

For Fantasy I Say Go With Your 25mm Figs if you already have 'em... If you were Going to Buy Minis Just for DF I Suggest Going for 15mm Only Because they are the Most Common "Small" Mini around...

If you are Doing Sci-Fi you have A lot more Options because You Can use any 1/72nd Scale, 15mm, Micro-machines Etc... As well as the more common 25mm...

So I Guess it really Comes down to What you already Have or Plan on Buying... Main thing to Remember is that if You Decide to Use the "Grid" on the DF Floors, they are 1" Square (Foot Print for a Wall Section is 2"x2") And there is Approximatley 1.5" by 2" Available Surface area to those Floors, since the Walls sit on top of the Floors... In any Event these Pieces are Useful to almost anyone but the Fact is the Smaller the Miniature the More to Scale it Looks, While Larger Minis will really "Fill" the Space Pretty Quickly...

Again, Just my Less than Humble Opinion, What do you Currently Have? (In terms of Scale Minis)...

Hi Kenneth,

This sort of question/topic has been brought up a couple of times in a couple of different ways here on the forums... you'll find greatly varying opinions on which minis go best with the DF pieces.

Have a look at this thread:
jefcon.com/dwarvenforums/viewtopic.php?t=243

It talks a lot about the scale of the DF pieces in relation to using them for modules and using them with minis. In my honest opinion, I think anything up to 30mm works just fine. Even if you have some large creatures such as my minotaur in this pic: www.purgatorio.com/gameroom/gamingtable/photos/table021.html
I think you'll find that you can use just about any size mini comfortably.

Take a close look at the adventuring party in that pic--it's comprised of several different manufacturers: GW, Reaper, Iron Mammoth, and Grenadier. One thing to keep in mind is that the DF pieces add flavor to the game as well as one Hell of a cool layout and background. Just 'cause a figure may be slightly taller than the top of a wall doesn't mean you shouldn't use it in your DF pieces. The pieces are but accessories to help give a better visual to your game.

Dante,

I Hope that I did not Come across as Anti-DF or Something...<Chuckle>... Cause I Love this Stuff...

Kenneth,

Dante Is absolutely Correct about this stuff being a Great Backdrop for Gameing regardless of the Miniatures you Use... My Only Point was that The Smaller they are the Less Cramped they "Look", but this does not necessarily effect Game Play... Unless you plan on Using the 1" Grid on the Floors AND Have Medium or Smaller Creatures with Larger than 1" Bases...

I have plenty of GW minis, but I'm thinking I will sell them off and go with another manufacturer, and a smaller scale.

I used to by Ral Partha and RAFM way back before GW even started using slottabases. I thought the GW minis were grotesque.

After being away from the mini hobby for a decade I got back into it when 5th Ed. WHFB came out, but dumped it just after 6th Ed.

Still have half a dozen armies kicking around.

I'm interested in skirmish style mini gaming rather than either FRGP or Battles. Since I'm going 15mm for my WWII gaming minis (though I do collect 28mm on the side) I'm not adverse to the smaller scales and have been nosing around the 15mm fantasy sites. Which manu produces 15mm fantasy that doesn't look erm shabby compared to the very fine DF products, though, I wonder?

Ha! MLV--look at the time of the posts... we were within minutes of each other so when I was clicking "Reply"--yours hadn't shown up yet! Too funny.

No, I don't think your post sounded anti-DF at all. You have some very good points about each scale mini and DF. I could scenarios using 15mm minis looking like "epic" scale adventures. You could certainly do a decent "Mines of Moria" type setup with 15s.

re. using any size mini comfortably...

I have some pieces of the cavern set, and the nooks and crannies, steps, etc. are much too tight to fit a slottabase, and these are some of the features that I want to take advantage of when gaming, hence this thread. :)

Kenneth,

If You want the Most "Bang" out of the Smaller Details of the DF Stuff 15mm is probably a good choice... as to Manufacturers, Geesh it has been a long time... Do a Google on 15mm Miniatures maybe?

Or you could have a look at www.theminiaturespage.com

It's an excellent "member driven" site with LOADS of info on everything you want/need to know about minis, sculpting minis, gaming, and more.

You'll certainly find tons of info on 15s there.

Kenneth,

Hey I'll Bet you Could do some Great German Castle Scenarios with DF and WWII... Or Maybe Airplane Hangers... Oh hey Guns of Naverone? (SP?)... And I guess if you were not worried about exact Scale or Looks, Just a few Corner Pieces Say Three, could be a Ruined House etc... Hey if You Do Any of this Post Some Pictures so we can see WWII 15mm with DF for Comparison?
