"Tomb of Horrors"

This scenario showed how a story doesn't have to revolve around combat. There was very little combat in this. However, there were tons of clever traps. Which challenged the intelligence and creativity of not only the characters. But also the players.

Also, it was full of great artwork. Giving the players a good sense of what each part of the tomb looked like. (Important for many of the traps)

My only gripe with it is: The Demi-Lich was too tough. I think I DM'd this scenario on about 3 different occasions and the players never succeeded.

We came up against 2 orcs in a cave (first encounter) which took us 5 minutes of arguing to determine what an orc was. I took one swing, missed, and then I died. That first encounter was the best. I was hooked for life.

This sounds so much like my 1st D&D experience. My grade 4 teacher brought in her son to DM a session for the kids who liked reading and writing. I played a cleric and rolled a 1 on my first attack on a wyvern in a cave. My mace shattered against the wall and soon enough my character got killed. That was all it took. I was hooked.

I got into an argument with a drunk at the local tavern before we even got out of town and he drew a two handed sword and stabbed me through the chest...I died....but i was hooked too.....obviously, next time all I wanted was to get enough gold to buy a two handed sword:)

It still grinds my gear that some halfhead thought that using a houserule that ensures that 5% of all attacks will ruin your weapon was a good idea. Never mind using said houserule for a bunch of 4th graders first D&D experience. It's amazing that you still wanted to play after that.

Palace of the Silver Princess was my first ever game and I will always remember it fondly.
I do remember running Dwellers of the Forbidden City and telling the party that they were being attacked by giant humanoid frogs wearing leather jackets (bullywugs wearing leather armour/harness).
There was a pregnant pause and then one of the players said "cool man" - doing a Fonze 'Happy Days' impression. We nearly wet ourselves (I guess you had to be there).

I'd actually started with Tunnels & Trolls in '76, the "poor man's D&D," which was $3.00 for one booklet, while D&D was $10 for three booklets in a white box. My original Game Master in D&D back in '77 was Skip Sanders, who'd mastered the GM's evil chuckle.

I had a mage with a Strength of 16 who encountered a lone Orc with a sword. Dorrur of Aku-Dur, feeling mighty and bold, told the party to stay back, he'd handle this one, and leaped in with his dagger. The Orc dropped him like a bad habit, reminding me why wizards should stay in the back of the party!

Kradlo,

If I had half the memory you have I would be a genius. That is amazing that you remember so much detail. My older brother had a copy of Tunnels and Trolls that we bought at a garage sale in 1981. I only remember that because that same year for my birthday I got a used 1st ed book and we argued which was better.
