Populating my dungeon. 5 Years, 9 Months ago
So now that I've jumped in, and my dungeon itself is incredibly awesome looking with DF tiles (although I must admit, I keep typing or thinking Dwarf Fortress instead of Dwarven Forge) I feel really bad about having to lay down 2 bright orange craw worms, 2 spiders, a wolf, and a frog and saying to my gamers "These are all rats."

My friendly local game store doesn't sell loose minis, and while the gambler in me has bought quite a few sets of DDMs, the results are less than satisfactory, and have caused confusion in games.

Searching google for minis turns up hundreds of sites- most selling single minis for over the top prices (when I need 12 zombies, I'm hesitant to pay $ 4.00 for one).

So I ask you online semi anonymous new friends- what secrets does the gaming community have? I'm looking to buy like, 10-12 zombies, 10-12 skeletons, 10-12 hobgoblin or goblin like things, etc etc. I also don't have any of the required materials to paint, and I don't think I can make that leap at this time. I know DF sells several of these, and it would be cheap and will probably be what I do for the orcs and skeletons, but they don't have zombies, hordes of rats.. etc.

Thank you

PS: DF rocks.

Here is your site:

store02.prostores.com/servlet/auggiesgames/StoreFront

Auggie's has been my first stop for single WOTC pre-painted DDM single minis for years now. He has one of the only reasonable shipping policies (they DO NOT charge a per mini shipping charge!!!) and excellent customer service.

Hmmm - I just checked and it doesn't seem like he may have the quantities you are after. Your other option is e-bay, especially the e-bay stores.

Here are a few:

stores.shop.ebay.com/Miniature-Market_D-D-Minis_W0QQ_fsubZ6379117QQ_sidZ5392861QQ_trksidZp4634Q2ec0Q2em14QQ_sopZ2QQ_scZ1

stores.ebay.com/spikegifs-Miniature-Horde-House

stores.shop.ebay.com/Troll-And-Toad_D-D-Minis-Singles_W0QQ_fsubZ3537092QQ_sidZ68701628QQ_trksidZp4634Q2ec0Q2em322

stores.ebay.com/StrikeZoneOnline_Dungeons-and-Dragons-Miniatures_W0QQcolZ2QQdirZ1QQfsubZ195444619QQftidZ2QQtZkm

stores.shop.ebay.com/Only-D-D-Miniatures__W0QQ_armrsZ1

stores.ebay.com/Avengers-Rule-Super-Store_Dungeons-Dragons-Minis_W0QQcolZ4QQdirZ1QQfsubZ7QQftidZ2QQtZkm

Just be careful as per/mini shipping charges can add up.

My advice, if you are not sure of exactly the mini you are looking for is to sort each stores' inventory by "lowest price" and then browse and find one that has the mini AND the stock you want.

Good luck!

Ebay is where I get 95% of my gaming supplies. Alot of the time if you buy a bunch from the same seller you can get reasonable shipping rates. whenever I win one I see what other pieces the seller has before I pay, that way I can get the best rate.

I will also put in my 2 creds for Auggies like Harneloot, and Ebay like Shadbelly, as I use those the most to get my current "fantasy" miniatures (and extras's of my SW). I don't buy the D&D in bulk anymore, so I tend to buy "lots" of fiugres, Like a "common lot" ie a group of one each o of all common figures from DDM set X, and an "Uncommon lot and Common Lot" from Y. Then pick up multiples of things I like. Example being recently I liked the Kuther thingoes from the latest set, I bought a single auction that had 8 of those common ones in it, and got enough for my needs, and a Lot of the commons to flesh out my figures a bit more.

I am almost hesitant to direct you towards Reapers Legendary Encounters line. It is pre-painted and plastic, but there are two reasons i am hesitant to do it.
1) they just have a poor poor selection only 23 figures after two years on the market (they have 3 skeletons total in the line, an archer, a spear man and a sword guy, and 1 Zombie, and some Orcs like the Skeletons).
So they may get you a tad closer, to getting the 10-12 you need. ... I'd contemplate it, so you can have some variety in your figures (ie get 3 of the RE:LE then some others) to get "different" looking figures out there to better keep track of.
2) while not $4 for a figure they are $2-5 for the "human sized" figures. Not sure if this is in or over your price range. I don't think they are Outrageously expensive, but I won't buy more than 1 of each of any of them myself as i can't justify that price on them when I can grab a DDM for far less in some cases. And so far i have purchased only 2 of the 23 they make, as thye just don't make any figs i am interested in.

Thank you for all your help! Auggies was awesome. While I didn't use it for many of my specific needs this dungeon I took advantage of their supercheap pricing on more than a few minis and created some warbands for the future. I found tons of stuff on ebay after I spent some time and figured out the stores, etc :)

Things are looking up for less confusion in the future!

Anyone have any suggestions for prepainted beds in the meantime? (until the tavern set restocks) I feel like I've scoured the internet, but I can barely find any prepainted stuff to begin with ( www.miniaturebuildingauthority.com/ has tables, chairs and barrels! woo!) and I definitely can't find any beds :/

None that I know of. As you say, there is VERY little pre-painted scenery out there....

There is a plastic set you can get at most doll house stores that has a bed-frame covered by a checkered yellow (might be other colors too) blanket. It looks pretty lack luster next to the DF equivalent, but it'll serve the purpose for you, I'm sure.

I searched online and couldn't find the image, but the company makes a few sets that are perfect for 25mm scale. There is a set with a toilet and bathroom accessories for all you modern gamers out there too.

Check at the local doll house store. The set comes with an end table and dresser, as well as a water jug and maybe something else. Handy little set. If you can't find it I can take a photo of the pieces from the set.

I watch ebay for lots of unpainted minis. I'm generally able to pick unpainted minis up for a buck each, especially looking for ones that are painted poorly and stripping them of paint. You can also look for old Warhammer minis that go dirt cheap when they are replaced by newer sculpts. I have a ton of the old skeletons that are ok and some ratmen that are pretty decent.

I then prime everything black and drybrush them. The painting does take some time but you can get fairly good with some work. I have a lot of poor to average minis (that look about like pre-painted ones or worse) but quite a few that look fairly good. I've switched over to Vallejo paints and love how thick they are on black.

I am also looking at using a dip technique with something called magic wash. I think I could churn out whole armies in no time with priming, painting and then dipping them into a diluted wax dark wash and then a light drybrush on top.
