Maybe I'll try a 4e session at GenCon this year? I had the same kind of automatic "I don't like it" reaction to 3.5 edition when people tried to get me to switch from 1st edition as I am having to 4e.
I have tried it a few times (4th) and I am still don't like it, there are just some things I don't like about it, that i'm not really going to go into here. And for me it's not a knee jerk reaction to edition changes, had no problems in the past going from Basic, to Expert, to Advanced (1st) then to 2nd and 2nd revised, to finally to 3rd and to 3.5 even. There is just something I don't like about 4th, and that's saying a lot as when I started playing SAGA, and all the talk of it being 3.75, i was optomistic about, 4th. But After a conversation i walked into on my play group last night, i have a feeling an issue will come up at some point.
The Current GM said something like 3rd is now dead to him(he's not running a D&D game at all, and not 100% sure he even has the 4th books, I just know he never liked the loads and loads of splat from 3.5... Which at times makes me wonder what is going to happen with 4th, as 4th is almost based on the splat concept. It's just now they don't call them "complete X" it's PHBII etc. Designed to be a Core part of the rules, the creep will come that he so disliked before.... so If we go back to D&D don't know what will happen.

While i can see in Saga the direction of 4th and vise versa, 4th is just to far in some areas to the point I don't think "saga=3.75" is actually right. If yow want to call Saga 3.75 then 4th to me feels more like 4.5 to even higher, it just goes beyond the changes.

Played Savage Worlds, and passed on it, Like the last version of the system better (Playing the last edition of Deadlands, not the savaged version and we had a lot of fun with it).

Eh I hope this doens't turn this into an Edition War,

Well I had a significant investment in 3.0- 3.5 I really liked both versions. I was angry when the 4th edition announcement was made.I thought o great another way for WotC to separate me from my money. In fact I was certain I wouldn't buy it.
Then about 4 months before 4th editions release, I started reading the play test and spoilers about the new edition. I thought what the heck I will buy DMG, PHB, MM. i gave them a read with an open mind. I really thought wow what a great concepts. Exception based mechanics. All classes fall into a role (defender, striker, controller, leader, also hybrids now) which makes them easier to balance since now they are balanced agaist a role not per class.
We had a lot of fun that first game session. It was the first time, I could remember in a long time, the low levels having such built in team-play mechanics and lots of combat options. Terrain really made more of difference it seemed with all the pushing and pulling and sliding that player and monster powers could do.

Since then our group has really enjoyed 4th edition. Especially now with the PHB 2. Some of the more enjoyed classes like the Bard, Druid, and Sorcerer classes are available. Also, the updates (errata)are far fewer than 3.0 -3.5.
Most of the time its misprint of word or line versus complete mechanic change. The only mechanic change which really was just a clarification imho was on stealth. Also it seemed to me with 3.0-3.5 book releases they would break mechanics with each release. Where in 4th edition nothing seems to get broken with new releases but instead options.

Well not so much in defense of 3.X but to maybe context it, sure 3rd had loads of books and broke stuff, but over the course of the line, and you had to pick the combos from Book X and Y to truelly brake the game, all of the new products change old powers, which is where the problems happened, you have to make new products...
4th has been out for about a year now. It's had how many releases? the Base 3, Martial Power, the FR book, Draconomicon, Manual of the Planes, Open Grave, and now the PHBII, next month Arcane Power, they are already talking about MPII for 2010. Now add in the new "power cards" from the DDM line, and they will get to the point of breaking things, give them time, I bet a trip to the WotC Optimization boards will get some silly broken options as it is now. It's happened in just about every version of the game, it will happen in this one. It kind of has to happen, or else there are no new versions.
One of the reasons I'm not jumping on, seen it, done it, add in the changes I don't like and 4th has nothing for me.

Power cards from DDM? The power cards they release are just prints of the powers you get from the PHB1- no new powers or changes or anything. They make combat really quick- and it beats the hell out of printing hundreds of power cards out like I used to be doing.. Sorry, technical point :)

Well as I said, I was highly resistant to 4th edition when they announced it. Mostly because of my investment in 3/3.5 ed. I like 3/3.5 and still think its a great version of D&D. After playing 4th edition for a while now, I think the massive mechanic changes were a good thing. I think the combat system of 4e is a an improvement over the previous editions. As far as splat breaking things in 3.5 once they released the complete series broken things happened quick. 4th edition they have released over 12 books(not to mention the numerous dragon and dungeon magazine editions) with no real complete mechanic breakdown from the new additions. Will this last? Probably not, but I have to still state my belief that 4th edition is a really fine version of the game.
I think most people who say they do not like 4th edition have not played a few sessions. Those that have played a few sessions and still do not like it, well that is definitely their right, but truly a mystery to me.

What I think is also important to note about 4th edition, is this game has plenty of options with just the PHB, DMG, and MM. You could have those three books and really not need any other. It is so easy to make classes in this version. Make up your own powers, even base them off 3/3.5 edition. So simple to scale up or down monsters and Bid bad boss guys. I couldn't say that with the previous version.

Some people have referred 4e as the dumbed down version of D&D. I would say don't confuse dumb with simplicity.

Currently my friends and I are playing an old Avalon Hill game called "The Rise and Decline of the Third Reich". We used to play it a lot in the 80s, and I recently printed out a HUGE 4' x 6' vinyl map of it -- and then mounted it on a piece of steel. We use magnetic counters -- and we are having a blast! A game lasts about 100 hours, so we are taking months to play it.

We should get back to D&D this summer. Probably 4.0, but I really like 1st edition.

Jeff,

3R is a great game. Have you ever tried World in Flames? If not, check it out at Australian Design Group, although it isn't exactly cheap.

I like WIF because it adds in Japan, China, and the pacific action. It allows Germany to try the Rommel strategy and try and press on to India. Overall, a great WW2 strategic boardgame.

As a technical point there are new powers comming, I'm not refering to the ones in the packs that came out last week which are from the PHBI or in this case Martial Power, (like these Martial Power Fighter Power Cardsbut the ones comming in a month or so with the Miniatures Packs (like these Player's Handbook Heroes: Series 1 - Arcane Heroes 1.
Which Lists
The Player's Handbook Heroes: Series 1 expansion for the Dungeons & Dragons Roleplaying Game features high-quality miniatures representing iconic player character races and classes described in the Player's Handbook and Player's Handbook 2 core rulebooks. There are six booster packs in all: 2 packs of martial heroes, 2 packs of arcane heroes, 1 pack of divine heroes, and 1 pack of primal heroes.

Each booster pack contains 3 visible, high-quality, non-random plastic miniatures representing D&D player characters, plus an exclusive power card not available elsewhere! Each miniature comes beautifully painted and fully assembled.

So since all the ones that were released last week, are listed as comming from the PHB (or the book they are from)Each and every class power appearing in the Player's Handbook has its own card. Simply select the cards for your character's powers and you're ready to play!
www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=products/dndacc/9780786952236
and the text for the Minis says...plus an exclusive power card not available elsewhere!
they can't be from the books out, as they contain everything in book X, or they wouldn't be not available elsewhere So yes as a technical point they are making new powers comming out next month, 6 in fact, and then likely 6 more later in the year when they switch up mini distrubution.
So with 12 of those set to come out this year, that's 12 brand new powers that are designed to get people to buy the new product line, and there should be 12-18 new packs next year, the posibilitiy of having to create 18 brand new "spiffy" powers each year... yeah I don't think it will take long to break the game, not including all the books Like PHBIII, Martial Power II, Arcane PowerII, Divinr Power I and II,...

I like the approach the folks at Paizo are taking with Pathfinder. They are more focused on producing CONTENT than rules books. Give me a couple well written rules books and then spend the development time on adventures, cities, NPCs, traps, etc. etc.

I completely agree ...

Don't bog me down with more rules, revised rules, clarified rules, adjusted mechanics and endless books to buy. Give me a clear, concise core set and then keep the game world(s) content coming.

Also agree. Pathfinder is fantastic and that is where my funds are going instead of Wizards. Hopefully they maintain support!

Oh, a little update on the new powers comming with the Hero Packs, it's not 1 power card for the 3 minis in each pack (which is what I first thought it would be but 3 new powers per pack!) , so it's 3 new power cards per. So with 12 different Hero packs coming this year, that's 36 brand spanking new powers.
Here is the first preview of the new packs and some info on the powers Martial Heroes and today they put up the first of the Divine Heroes

They also release a lot of new powers every issue of dragon pretty much. Clutters up the character builder a lot unless you disable them.
