I'm just wondering what edition most people are playing. My group and I have been playing a sort of bastardized version of 3.5 with alot of house rules. Sometimes I really miss 2nd edition because I played it for so long but i'm not sure it would be an easy switch back because when we played it years ago we used no minis and the rules are not as set up for their use.

We play 3.5. We tried 4.0 but did not really get off the ground with it. It was not that we did not like it or hated it like others who will bash it, it was just not as enjoyable to us as 3.5. We used to play 2nd ed. but lost a lot of players due to some unbalances. (I guess all versions of rules have this) We tried 3.0, liked it but it was a little broken. 3.5 fixed most issues, introduced a few more but for the most part we enjoy it. We do not allow most option books. We play basic 4, (MM, DMG, PHB, Psionics) and arms and equipment and complete adventurers but not everything.

3.5

Good battle tactics AND RP options. (I like the skill systems as an elaboration of the old non-weapon proficiencies.) Plenty people around here play it, so no shortage of players. Lots of $$$ invested in 3.5 products. Fireballs aren't square and you can use your spells in situations other than just combat.

I'm playing mostly 4.0 these days. To me, it seems to capture some of the 1st edition spirit somehow. The rules are generalized nicely, so there isn't a specific rule for everything and it seems to flow better for me.

I also plan on playing Pathfinder as well. As a matter of fact, I'm going to run a Pathfinder game at ConQuest.

I played 3/3.5 from the day it came out till the day 4th ed came out. I was glad to make the switch, but I still like 3.5. I like 4th because it is basically a tactical combat roleplaying game. The strategies, the way abilities from different characters can interact, the way that each race is VERY unique but balanced, I dig it. And as DM, Mmmmm, so much easier to play the NPC's for me.

But, at the same time I'm running a "Basic" DnD game, and that's alot of fun too.

My favorite system is Rolemaster's little brother, MERP (Middle Earth Role Playing). Best character generation EVA! Someday I will run that game, when this Basic game runs it course....

Cheers

Well, I'll throw my 2 cents in here. We have a group of 5 people in our Ad&d campaign and we use good ole 1st and 2nd edition. Being the only major difference between 1st and 2nd editions are the Proficiencies and weapon specializations, although these we introduced in the 1st edition "unearthed arcana," anyways.
Being a collector of AD&D back in high school, most of us took about a decade off from playing and now that we're somewhat settled and have houses, we began gaming again. We saw no reason to dump a ton of money into 3.0,3.5,4.0 etc... Nothing beats the old AD&D tomes, modules and dragon magazines in my opinion, for what it's worth...
I would add the Df line has greatly brought our campaigns to life and definately put some life back in the old lead miniatures...

Dj - if I could find people willing to play it, I'd have to problem with some good old 1st edition! Still have all my old books and modules - (I'll never get rid of those!) and I've been borrowing some old dungeon crawls for my Ptolus game. Just used the caverns from A4!

Hey, have you ever seen the CD-ROM of the first 200 issues of Dragon?

3.5, cause we don't want to spend hundreds of bucks on new books.

Right now we are playing 3.5 Edition. The 4th edition wasn't tried out, but for my group there are too few roleplay options in it
(i.e. the skill system is poor).

We switched over from AD&D to 3.5. Edition cause of the skill and feats system. We have no problems with power-gaming
since my players mostly play characters cause they have a specific picture in mind and not by min/maxing classes and combinations.
Some classes that cause trouble are simply dislallowed by the GM (me) cause they are feelig too powerful or doesn't fit the campaign theme.

All in all we like 3.5 Edition.

Hey, have you ever seen the CD-ROM of the first 200 issues of Dragon?
I have it and I love it! I also made one of the first 150 issues of dungeon. It took me weeks to compile all the pdfs but it was well worth it. I also made a bunch with the old books on them. I have a dragonlance, forgotten realms, greyhawk, ravenloft, and non world specific module ones. What campaign setting is everyone playing?

Even though I started playing D&D in the 80's we aren't playing it anymore (and i have played every version there is). We ran a game of 3.5 D&D up through after the release of 4th, tried 4th, we didn't think it did anything substantially better than 3.5, and in fact did not enjoy many of the things it did do and didn't do that we liked or didn't like. I.e. while it fixed some things, they were fixes that you didn't really need to fix, and didn't fix some other things that were a "problem" in a way we did like. So we packed up all Fantasy haven't gone back. We played some Deadlands, and right now we are in a Pulp game using the Hero system (which reminds me I have two XP to spend, time to up my VPP).
When we were playing, if i was running tyipically we were in the Realms, if the other DM was running we were in his world.
