Here are some replies from Chris Beukeveld, who responded to my queries about the Great Victory Dwarven Mine floor tiles:

Hi,

There is a company called dwarven forge that makes similar tiles. Great Victory are better because:
Each piece is hand painted.
Each piece is cast out of heavy stone not plastic.
Each floor tile is cast from a unique mold, whereas dwarven forge all the pieces are exactly the same (boring).
The kits are packaged in die cut soft foam, not cheap styrofoam.
Great Victory is crafted in Canada, not China.

Thanks for your question!

AND:

Hi,

Here's an additional photo showing a full set.
These are stone, not plastic. They are made in Canada and packaged in die cut soft foam, not cheap styrofoam.

Thanks for your questions!

They also sent me a picture of a full set of tiles that I'll post in the Pictures thread.....

In order:

DF is hand-painted, and always has been.

DF is not plastic, it is polystone. (Has this guy ever SEEN a DF product?)

Each tile may be unique, but they also lack a distinct theme -- a couple are scored stone, some show metal inclusions, some show mineral inclusions, they are all over the place. Consistency is not boring.

Other than ecological considerations, what's wrong with styrofoam? By the picture they put up, there isn't actually enough soft foam to protect the tiles from much of anything.

What (in this context) makes Canada better than China? Is the workforce better at casting and painting? Is it the lack of overseas shipping in their overhead? Unless this is done by somebody working from his own garage, there's a really good chance that the labor costs are eating the shipping savings. Without specifics, this just sounds like jingoism. (I'm not slamming Canada, I'm slamming this particular guy.)

It's also incredibly disingenuous to describe DF as "a company... that makes similar tiles". By referencing DF in their advertising, they are basically admitting that DF is the standard by which all other indoor terrain products must be judged. You can't cite someone as the state of the art, then try to dismiss them as just a (inferior) competitor.

Someday, somebody besides Dwarven Forge is going to make modular indoor terrain that is of similar production/artistic quality. I just hope that they have the class to stress their product's compatiblity with Dwarven Forge, rather than trying to compare it directly to DF.

Oh, sweet defecating <insert deity name of your choice>!

It's one thing to talk up your product, and it's quite another to make up lies about your competitor. Here's why this guy's going to fail:

1) His product doesn't work on it's own. You need Dwarven Forge pieces in order to make his pieces useful. Maybe he has plans to expand the line down the road, but he's not likely to get that far because...

2) He's alienating the people he needs to turn into customers. The quality of DF products is apparent to anyone who owns it. Sure, people nitpick and complain about various little things here and there, but I have never heard a single person question the artistry or quality of the pieces. Thus, anyone who sees that quality claim is going to question it, and anyone who reads the passage quoted above is going to call shenanigans.

The funny thing is, with a different approach, he could probably be really successful. After all, it's not like the 2"x2" tile is an industry standard; it's a Dwarven Forge standard. So, he obviously knows who's the shark and who's the remora. He could have just as easily set the hyperbole aside and offered the product as a way to supplement what DF users already have (because who among us doesn't want more and more options?), and I don't think anyone would have seen it as a problem.

Ugh.

The GV stuff looks like crap in my opinion, and their comparisons are bogus. It's one thing to make a product, but don't try to pump yourself up with false comparisons, and especially don't denigrate the very product you're trying to supplement.

I just want to see this clown cast stone - other than the way he's casting stones now, at DF!

Chump.

And he can come after ME with a lawyer if he want to try; I'LL make him prove EVERY CLAIM.

Excellent point. I would have been his target audience.

However, even if he bumbles his way to ever have something I want, I would never buy anything from this stooge.

I maintain that the DF standard IS the industry standard.

At the very least, 1"x1" is a very solid standard for the grid, and measurements divisible by 2 is a very solid standard for tile sizes. Adhering to that makes a product DF-compatible, which is probably going to be a major factor in the success or failure of any product that tries to enter this market.

YC and jackattack have it right; 1" grid and 2"x2" tile ARE the industry standard. Even GW, which has tried to fight anyone ELSE setting a standard, has jointly established the 1" base as a standard for 25-28mm miniatures! WotC adheres to the standard; Reaper and Ral Partha kept to it for that scale; EVERYBODY sticks to the 1" base for 25-28mm scale miniatures!
So WHERE does this guy come off, claiming (or inferring) that he is "the leader" in gaming terrain?
Dwarven Forge has taken what was - and is - the industry standard for the grid - the 1" grid - and established it on the TERRAIN standard, the 2" x 2" tile. EVERYTHING Stefan makes is based on the 2x2, or a multiple thereof. And THAT simplifies all the terrain management.

Only canadians know how to cast stone, it's a national secret. And the hand foam cutting industry receives a lot of handouts and pats on the back from the cultural affairs bureau, eh.

Wow, while i have no plans to buy those things, I have to say I am a little suprissed at how much hate is being tossed toward this guy. One of the things I have always liked about the DF fourms is they have always in the past felt like a friendly place where people share with each other, this and another similar thread really has me wondering at times just what it takes to get this group mean spirited.

We have mentioned all sorts of other items that can be used to complement our builds, I don't see this falling out side of that (another option), and while I don't like the product and won't buy it, this reminds me of the "catacomb" production set a few months back, and how hatefull that got.
