Owlcon is a small-to-medium gaming con I help run every year at Rice University in Houston. The con went off three weeks ago, and we were very happy with the results.

With a couple of other fellows, I run one of the higher-profile events, a D&D tournament focused on using Master Maze.

A set of pics is up at my Flickr page: Owlcon 2009 Master Maze Tournament pictures. Y'all may find them interesting, or not. It's all from my personal collection. Pieces are drawn from all three rivers & lakes sets, cavernous passages, caverns, room & passage, ogre's den, wicked additions (2-3 multiples of all sets) as well as quite a few individual pieces.

The turnout was actually not that bad--considering the recession and the direct hit of a hurricane four months earlier, the 10% drop we had was better than we were hoping for. Our pre-reg numbers, however, did not follow the usual pattern, so we'll keep an eye on that.

And really, we got nothing but good feedback from the attendees and guests, so apparently we're getting pretty good at this con stuff....

Thanks for the compliments. The premise of the event (at least the first round) was that there's a village that puts on "Fungeon Crawl", a fake dungeon crawl event with referees and villagers playing "monsters" and such. Sort of a Master Maze-scale True Dungeon!

The tavern at the center of the dungeon is called the Milestone in a joke at the new use of the term in 4E.

As far as the plot goes, the characters (in two teams racing against each other) start to go through the challenges of Fungeon Crawl, but in the encounter before the inn, it turns out that the referee is a doppelganger who uses the confusion of the battle (with fake "gnolls" and "ghouls") to start killing villagers. Now the characters want to investigate where the doppelganger come from and protect the villagers from whatever's going on. In the inn, they have to find more doppelgangers infiltrating the event (which is a sort of Host Your Own Mystery), and then go on to face the doppelgangers' master, a foulspawn seer leading a bunch more foulspawn and aberranty critters.

In the championship round, years later, the paragon-tier characters are summoned back when the foulspawn return, and they have to go into the abandoned caves to defeat the foulspawn's true masters--mind flayers and other tough aberrations. In this round, we used chasm pieces to break the tavern in half, removed the bridge pieces so there's not a path across the water, etc.
