I was at Michael's (the craft store) and found some new plastic animals I hadn't seen before. If this is old news, I apologize. Everything in this post is by Safari Ltd, a company that makes plastic toy animals.

In the Mythical Realms line, they have a Griffin ($9.99), a Phoenix ($9.99), a Pegasus, Poseidon, a Mermaid, and a Minotaur. All of these are way out of scale, but if you need a giant minotaur or the actual Poseidon then these will do nicely. The phoenix (4" tall, 5" across) might have some roc in its background, and the griffin (4" long) might be a giant breed created to fight dragons or something.

There is also a Dragon Collection. These are not as well done as (some of) the McFarlane Dragons, but they are certainly cheaper. They don't have the diorama elements that limit the game utility of the McFarlane line, and their smaller size makes them more compatible with DF. Safari Ltd's Dragon Collection consists of:

Red Dragon - this is not a great piece, so I can't recommend it.

Green Dragon - a very serviceable sculpt, about 7" long, reared up on hind legs with wings back, looking like it is going to pounce or possibly breath fire on something in front of it. The head has kind of a ceratopsian ribbed frill on it (less weird than it sounds). $5.99

Four-Headed Dragon - an orange hydra, about 8" long. Nicely done, each head individually sculpted in a different position and attitude. $14.99

Blue Chinese Dragon - blue with gold highlights, 7" long, doing that sinuous arching/coiling thing. The head is very well done. Modders could probably cut a few of these up and mount one tail, one head, and two or three midsections on bases to create an oriental sea serpent that is emerging from the water in multiple places. $9.99

Purple Chinese Dragon - same as the blue, but from the picture I'm guessing that some of the highlights are done in translucent blue.

Water Dragon - blue with gold belly, claws, spines, and teeth, about 6.5" long. It is webbed on the feet and between the dorsal spines, and the tail seems based on an eel's. The head is kind of looking back over its left shoulder. $14.99

(Lengths mentioned above are overall, and do not account for bends, curves, coils, etc. Prices are what the craft store was charging.)

All of the pieces above come fully painted, and none of them have (or need) bases. For a better look, here is a link.

I also found an Ancient Egypt Toob. The tallest piece is less than 3", which is a little big, but many might be useful (especially in pairs) as statues to dress up a tomb or palace or treasure chamber. Of the twelve items included, I consider the following to be useful:

Bastet - seated black cat with gold eyes and collar.

Tutankamen Burial Mask - sits upright, might make a nice altar accent.

Nefertiti - a bust on a square base, might go on a DF Pedestal.

Sarcophagus - stands upright. Too big to be a standard coffin, but it might hold a big mummy, or it might just be a statue.

Anubis Sarcophagus - stand upright. A little smaller than the sarcophagus above.

Great Sphinx - the one from Egypt, with erosion marks. Two of these might make for a nice temple entryway.

Toth - golden ibis-headed man. Good for a large statue.

Isis - human woman. Good for a large statue.

Of less use are:

Anubis - holding an Egyptian shield and sword, he is overbalanced and tends to tip.

Scarab - decent sculpt, but in dark green plastic. Touching up with paint should improve it vastly.

Re Falcon - same green plastic, with a loop on top of its head.

Giza Pyramids - three pyramids cast as one piece about 1" tall (if that). I just can't think of a use for it.

All of these pieces are done in a medium-density plastic, so some of the taller ones with slender legs may be warped. Also, the fairly small bases on some will leave them prone to tipping over. On the other hand, the tube costs $5.99 -- even if you only use half of them to dress up your dungeon, you can't beat a buck apiece. For a peak at them, the link is below.

I hope that if you are looking for decent prepainted dragons, etc. that some of these items will be useful to you.

I use Safari Ltd and another other companies, "(she Sech" something, sounds german) which is in that same idea, they have lots of Dino's and other animals, i use them all the time For D&D, and for Deadlands. Not so much for my Sci Fi gamming as many look a bit too "real world" and not as alien. But the Toobs and Maga Toobs they have can supply a lot of painted, nicely sculpted animals and things that are to scale or very close. I love these things and were some of my first "miniatures" back when we started using them with 3.0. I was working at a Toys R Us at the time and the similar line of Discovery Store animals were bought in bulk for scenery and critters, still greab some of the Toobs from Safari Ltd at Michael's if it has something i think i can use.

I purchased a Shark Toob from Mystic Aquarium. Hopefully now that WoTC has redesigned their mini line we'll get some aquatic critters! (and hopefully they'll be painted better than my Toob sharks!)

The Bob Evans restaurant where Sandy & I frequently do Saturday breakfast often has Toobs; I may have to hit them for some critters...
