From Wizards:

We have received a tremendous amount of feedback from fans regarding the D&D Miniatures line, and have made some exciting changes for 2009. Here’s what’s coming to a shelf near you!
Dungeons & Dragons Miniatures -- Player’s Handbook Heroes

More than anything else, D&D players have been asking us for more PC (player character) minis. The D&D Heroes line features high-quality miniatures representing iconic player character races and classes described in the Player’s Handbook and Player’s Handbook 2 core rulebooks. Now players will be able to find the miniature that best represents their PC, and Dungeon Masters can use these figures to represent non-player characters in their adventures.

Launching in Spring 2009, the first D&D Heroes series features six different packs (18 figures total):

* Martial Heroes 1
* Martial Heroes 2
* Arcane Heroes 1
* Arcane Heroes 2
* Divine Heroes 1
* Primal Heroes 1

Each package contains 3 PC minis: 2 males and 1 female, and 3 unique power cards featuring brand new class powers. All three of the figures in the package will be visible so you’ll know exactly which pack to pick for your game.

The D&D Heroes will be refreshed regularly in order to continue to deliver new PC options to players. There are two series scheduled for 2009 and three scheduled for 2010. MSRP $10.99.
Dungeons & Dragons Miniatures -- Monster Manual

Also new to the 2009 lineup are Monster Manual themed releases. These sets are designed to be what every Dungeon Master (or D&D enthusiast) needs to create riveting adventures and exciting encounters at all levels of play.

Releasing in Spring 2009, the first D&D Monsters set is called Monster Manual: Dangerous Delves. This will be a 40-miniature set containing both medium and large sized figures. Each semi-randomized “booster” box contains 5 minis: 1 visible figure, 1 rare figure, 1 uncommon figure and 2 common figures, as well as full-color D&D Dungeon Delve stat cards for each miniature. MSRP $14.99.

Upon the release of D&D Monsters and D&D Heroes, we will no longer package the D&D Miniatures line in its current configuration (fully randomized booster packs and huge packs). This means that November’s set -- D&D Miniatures: Demonweb -- will be the final release sold in fully randomized booster packs.

Wow !!!!! Just ... WOW !!!!

I need to go back and read that again !!

I was sure that the next set, or rather, individual figures from the next set, would end my involvement with D&D Miniatures as I have way too much plasti-crack as it is and my interest has been waning.

Very interesting announcement and development in what had become a stale product for me. I'll be interested to see what their take is on "high quality" "iconic player characters" is.

I'm not excited by the price, however. "Monster Manual Boosters" are still $14.99 but come with 5 figures rather than 8. That's a lot less "bang for my buck" ...

Time will tell ...

And what about small/tiny monsters? Says the Monster Packs will feature medium and large....

Also - seems like they are selling new 4e powers for the game through this new miniature line?

What does this bode for Star Wars minis?

Well SW minis have already had a bit of a shake up, with the set releasing this month they move to two new things, no more Huge sets and 40 mini sets.
They are also (asfaik) releasing more sets like the Hoth Target Exclusive (Clone wars gets one Nov 21st)

So it may be a while before we see figure packs in SW like these (i could see them doing the "monster packs, and would be all over that, a box of Stormtroopers, Clone troopers, or Droids, we like, me buy).
honestly i don't see it working the same in SW, consdiering you have something like 60 playable species for PC's/NPC's and there are what less than 10 for 4th Ed?
There are just Too many variantes for SW. Thoguh if they make fun critters for D&D i will likely buy more as some of these work great for SW monsters.

for the roleplaying aspect the new hero-starters are a great idea and will be a hit...
When they didn't include skirmish rules thats bad for the overall usability.
One strength of DDM was for me that its a product you can use in two games.

For the monster boosters, if the quality increases and the visible minies are usable
and large, or sometimes even huge. That would be a great idea.

Think about this, if there are 8 minies if "visible-rarity" and they are from the following list,
them i think it woul dbe good:

Ogre,
Troll,
Hill Giant,
Orc Wolf Rider,
Drow Lizard Rider,
Skeletal Giant,
Zombie Giant,
Minotaur

all miniatures you can use more than one...

I doubt huge unless in like a scenerio pack, but they are getting designed for "two" games, they are starting this whol "delve" thing ( a book comming out in Feb) and the new Orginized play is D&D Delve Night. and they mention Delve Stats... so there will be "quick combat stats" the question is will there be "skirmish" as well or is the DDM game gone and replaced by "delve"

Nutshell
Skirmish done

There will be a huge set, and it will be the visible in the pack, smalls will be included in sets, but no word of tiny.

Many Feywild minis will come out just in some of the other lines.

Visible figure will be large, and "rare quality" so 2 "rare", 1 uncommon and 2 common.

Skirmish is done ?!?!!

This is pretty drastic after re-tooling it to v.2.0 just a few months ago ...
oh wait ... Mage Knight killed their game off going to v.2.0, too !!!!

Well, I enjoy the occassional skirmish game, but was never into tourneys and haven't even played the 2.0 so I'm not too broken-up by the news. Besides, they've given me the reason to stop collecting so fervently. Less money on figures, more on DF :)

I'm not going to re-start my collection based on the new format but we'll see what they have to offer when they come out. Too many unanwwered questions now like quality, distribution, etc. And the collectible character upgrades that links to their paid online content is suspect.

I do wonder what this will mean for the secondary (Ebay) market ... for the old skirmish figures and for the new format ones as well :/

I also wonder if we might see the Gargantuan Draco Liche and other Icons that were in production in this new format ... one can hope ...

Mike what questions do you have on quality and distribution?

They have said they will be "higher" quality, ie 50% more deco ops and better sculpting on Commons, brining the common to Uncommon looks (some of the nicer looking figs in my mind) and the same with Uncommons going to rares. The Set Hero packs will be of "rare quality" and the picture they showed of the Goliath Hero certianly looks like it would have been a rare in the old format (so that does stand up).

So they say quality will go up, and it looks like it from the two pics, and honestly i know they can do it, the SW minis have generally looked very good, and to me, my gripe was never paint jobs, but the new simpler "cartoony" CAD sculpting, some of that may lessen with the better paint, and less figures a set (ie they can work more on the 40 in the same time they did 60).

as to Distrubution Each Visible monster gets SKU, and there will be two case formats, a case of multiple SKU's (so there are 8 visible monsters in set and you buy a case one of each (or 2 that they didn say), and a case of a SKU.
So my guess, is this will be like similar to the new SW fig break down which is 12C/12U/8R/8VR but for Monsters 12C/10-12U/8-12R/8Visable

One of the complaints of nonblind is cherry picking, someone going in buying all of the Beholders and leaving behind unwanted figs (ie in SW WEG i only ever found 1 blister of stormtroopers in a game store as GM's always bought them out as there just 3-4 Stormies in a blister and you need like at least 6 so that was two packs there from the assortment and they just always sold out, same with Jedi from the Metal WotC line, but there were always gungans on the rack). So the store has to restock a case and they end up with even more peg warmers as the next beholder sells out, tying up space etc with "junk"... To combat they said you can also buy a case of a SKU so if your store has a run on Beholders and people ask for more, buy just a case of 8 (or what ever number it is 8 seems likely or 16, but 16 if anyone mini seems pretty extreme my bet is on 8) beholders.

(yeah i read like all 8 pages of the discussion thread and many of the ones that spawned from it)
Each pack will have it's own SKU # so you'll know you are buying the troll vs the giant.
Yes. There will be assortment cases with even dist of visbles and bricks cases with all the same visible so stores can restock.

8 visibles per set
