I have a thousand of mega minis unpainted. flocks of sheep, cows, chickens etc. Royalty, commoners, etc. Reaper, ral partha, etc. All told I own roughly 2000 metal minis and only 100 or so are painted. I want my plastic crack

One used to be able to get tiny plastic animals with children's playsets, and some of them were more or less in scale. (A piglet might pass for a full-grown hog.) However, safety regulations concerning the size of toys for young children seem to have eliminated those. It's a pity, as they were relatively cheap and some of them were extremely high quality.

Maybe DDM could do a couple of "animal pens" with a large (sculpted) base and multiple animals. Like a fenced sty with a mud base and six or eight pigs, or a low stone wall around a grassy area with a bunch of sheep. Of course, that's not much for combat, so it's unlikely, but you never know...

Question for Stefan: What are the chance of DF ever doing a set of dungeon dressing items (bookshelfs, work tables, desks, armoires etc...) or a set of 20 or so commoners (butcher, baker, candlestick maker etc....)??? If there was enough interest is it a possibility? These things seem to be missing from the market in general (prepainted) but would be very useful to all us who don't strictly play combat minis games.

Shad, I painted up a sow and 8 piglets from Mega Minis, and two pigs from gosh-knows-where, that I've used for my farmstead assault adventure. I need to get back to painting - I miss licking the brushes!

Yeah, we have been begging for this kind of stuff for a long time. Various versions of the idea of "Themed" packs basically. In other words, sets not unlike the Tavern expansion for MBS. In this way many different ideas are possible, and, in my less than humble opinion, DF has a great excuse to add in the odd "Special" limited edition miniature!...*Woot*... Here's hoping anyway.

As to the DDM Objects... Oh, man... I have been really keen on that idea too... The trick has always been in making the items useful for both DDM and RPG applications. That is, because of the random element to their packaging. I would love to see some common dungeon dressings available in plastics! Not to mention other miscellaneous objects.

I keep hoping to hear a rumor about these sorts of sets in the "Non-random" packages that are allegedly on the way. Imagine the possibilities with something like a Caravan set, or a wilderness camp set. The former obviously having more DDM appeal than would the later, but still you get the idea. It was really sad to see WK stop producing their Dungeon and Modern accessory packs. That is the kind of thing I'd like to see WotC start doing.

Star Wars has been doing various vehicles and heavy weapons sorts of things for some time now, so maybe DDM will catch up. I get the idea that their pure DDM miniatures sales are slowly decreaseing, so perhaps they are legitimately trying to expand their clientle? I guess we'll see. Still, I would happily buy future sets like the Tavern expansion from DF, if and as Stefan makes them available. They will always be my first choice. But you can bet I'd buy the plastics too!

there is no mimic in the 4th ed. mm - maybe in the next. the rustmonster is also missing but there is a statement from wotc that it will be in one of the next sets. hope there will be a mimic then. there is also a rumor over at ddmspoilers.com that they are planing to do commoners for a long time and they are ready to do them now-there should be finished sculpts allready...?
the rumor with the non random minis is no rumor anymore but there is no clear statement what they will do.

They day that I buy a commoner miniature instead of a monster miniature is the day you can pry the dice bag out of my cold dead hands.

I fail to see the need for miniatures when buying a sword from a blacksmith or some company from a lady of the night.

I use common minis when the good guys are protecting the village. They sometimes do crazy things like run out in front of the bad guys making the good guys decide to protect them or not. mmmmwwwwhhhhaaaammmmmmwwwwhhhaaaaa

"Non-combatants" definately play a bigger role in games with a lot of RP in them. Which is something that I like personally. For Hack & Slash games, or those with a greater emphasis on delving the commoner is probably a bit superfluous and a token, extra D-6 or what have you works fine.

There is also a lot to be said for commonors in a primarily "Display" sort of game as well. An example being a mini/demo game at a FLGS or small convention where you want to draw curious folks in. Especially new gamers who tend to be all about the Oooohhh and Ahhhh factor.

Further, and I say this at the risk of bringing the wrath of hard-core female gamers down upon my shoulders--quick everyone duck--but I have often seen the Wife/Girlfriend contingent drawn into playing because of interesting miniatures and good terrain. I do not know why, but I have seen it on multiple occasions, when looking over a gaming table for the first time non-gamer females will often grab the odd-ball minis first, certainly the Inn-keeper, Elven minstrel, or even the Beer-maid mini gets man...er...woman handled before the the Conan look-a-like that we all painted in 8th grade... You know, the one with the giant 6-handed sword dripping with blood that we were all so proud of? Definately before they grab the Orc with the gore-drenched tunic...

But seriously, I dig the towns-folk minis a lot, especially if they have...hrmmm...pardon the pun, if they have some character. The black-smith, the town-crier, the bum, the fop, and so on. And, I have to say with great enthusiasm, that it can be fun to play characters that are not stereotypical looking Clerics, Mages, Barbarians, Thieves, or Paladins... Especially at lower levels it can be fun to bring an atypical mini to represent an unusual character. After all, it's rare to find a mini that has all of the gear that the character does anyway...

In a nutshell I think that there are a lot of different play styles, and that different people look for different things in their minis. Personally I will welcome commonors, objects, and other miscellaneous odds & ends if and when they are made available. Particularly in pre-paints that is. I know there are plenty of unpainted sculpts on the market, I just don't want to--or have time to--paint them and having them painted professionally is cost prohibitive. Got to save that kind of cash for DF man!...*Woot*...

Okay, rant over. Back to your'e regularly scheduled thread...

So Stefan, we've had a little bit of debate here, any chance for DF to produce these previously mentioned products in the future? Or do we have to populate our taverns and inns with otyughs???
