I've seen the movie, I just don't see the connection.

The spiders were a vicious flesh-eating infestation that cannibalized their own wounded. Which party in this little tragicomedy answers that description? []]

When RabidFox(*) was Bear_Trap, he made a point that he was logging on from a different computer, so the IP address doesn't necessarily match.
I must've missed the Bear_Trap incarnation. When did that one go down?

I'm glad it wasn't just me who noticed the style similarities.

Actually, 'neko, jackattack is an okay guy, as is dudebird (thanks for the strokes, dude!); jack and I have talked back and forth here numerous times and always figure out what's shakin' no problem. He DOES have a better sense of the forum history than I do, though.

And you're right; I was getting a bit suspicious about Harbinger, there toward the end. Bug wars, indeed. Sad, because RF was okay until he got triggered by some flaming on different subjects that went back and forth. But like any ordnance, once you pulled the pin, Mr. Grenade was NOT your friend!

Off-forum, we swapped some good tales, though. But he seemed to have disappeared a few years ago. And this really isn't the right place to be discussing the topic anyway, to get really right down to it.

Sorry about the hijack, guys; just thought I'd clarify a couple of things.

Dang it this looked like a really good thread until the last page and a half. I'm alway looking for more games that can justify the use of my DF collection. Mainly I use it with HARP rpg now and have used it a lot with D20.

I've tried to setup a Descent board with it, but the need to have an alcove on every side of a room if there is no passage stopped me cold. Can't really do it without it because the Overlord needs those alcoves for out of player line of sight spawning.

Now a game I have setup for, but not played yet is Dungeonbowl. It seems to work well for this with the declaration that only whole squares are legal areas to move into.

Lets get back on topic or start a new thread or something! This is really useful stuff to help me convince myself to buy more DF! :)

Would a couple of spare corner pieces make a decent Descent alcove?
Can you simulate an alcove by putting a door up against the wall?

I tried the corner pieces, but you soon run out of corner pieces that are needed for rooms and they don't work very well. For example a room at the end of a hallway would take 4 corner pieces to make the room and 6 more to place alcoves in the three entry points not used for hallways. I have 34 ordinary corner pieces and they'd go quick for a standard Descent dungeon. A half floor piece would serve better, but with no walls wouldn't look very good.

I'm not sure what you mean by simulating an alcove with a door, but I don't think so. The characters being able to deny the overlord new spawns within their line of sight is really important to the game and therefore needs to stay as true to the floor plan as possible.

Just occurred to me though that the corners may work now with the Road to Legend Descent expansion. Along with providing a campaign system, it has multilevel dungeons with smaller levels. 34 corners may be enough in that case. :)

The spawning alcoves all need to be 40ft x 20ft? Narrow passage pieces wouldn't work? What about using some diagonal walls and straight walls together?

I've played Descent (and enjoyed it!) but only from the Player side and not for a year or more so I'm a bit foggy on exactly how the alcoves are shaped....

The alcoves are just one square deep and two wide. Every room piece has 4 access points. If no passage or another room piece is used, then it is made into an alcove. I've mostly played the overlord and these spots are heavily used. You could play without them but it would be a considerable handicap for the overlord.

I'm just trying to think what other peices you could put there to use as an alcove.....

Have you tried the excellent TileSystem DF mapping program to map them out in?

could the passage dead ends be used? I forget what set they were in but they are 1 deep by 2 wide.
