which games to use DF stuff in? 6 Years, 1 Month ago
Hi everybody, I'm fairly new here, I've lurked for a while and made a post or 2. I've been searching the forums trying to get an idea of what games people actually make use of the DF stuff in, but thats where things seem to hit a road block for me.

It seems like the only 2 games that I consistently hear about on these forums are D&D and Star Wars. I'm just curious if there is anything else out there that people seem to make use of the DF stuff with.

For instance, there are lots of tabletop skirmish games out right now, does anybody use the DF stuff to create random layouts for these types of games, or is it mostly just RPG style stuff?

Welcome!

I have occasionally set up a DF dungeon/cavern and played a modified DDM skirmish game with a friend. We even placed wandering monsters and DF treasure items around the dungeon that had effects when one of your creatures got to them and picked them up (+1 sword, scroll of fire, +1 shield etc).

However it is as you say: the majority of what I use my DF stuff for is playing D&D.

Cheers!

Hi Tang,

Welcome to the fray... As to DFs suitability for Skirmish games, well--and I am biased of course--but I think that DF is really an excellent option for skirmish, especially for building custom maps and here are a few reasons why:

1) Compact lay out in a larger field of battle... What I mean here is; many skirmish lay-outs rely on essentially "Open" playing fields where sporadic walls and corridor sections are used to break up the terrain, provide objective areas, and offer cover.

DF's relatively small individual pieces make for a good option here because you can assemble "Parts" of the playing field where these walls or other elements might be while still leaving the majority of the gaming space open. One way of doing this would be to build over 2D tiles, printed backgrounds, gaming mats, or other improvised 2D terrain.

This also means that a few sets can go a long way since one may not be trying to build an entire dungeon, but rather set up key locations on the battle field.

2) Fairly low walls... DF offers a relatively low profile on the table top which means two things; one, players can easily reach across walls and manipulate miniatures without knocking things around too much, and two, unlike traditional 2D terrain (which is still great and useful) DF walls provide a natural set of barriers for determining LoS (Line of sight). Running a pre-measured length of string from one base to another is a simple and elegant means for determining LoS, range, and so forth. With DF there is really very little question about where a wall starts or stops.

3) Flexibility... Over the years DF has built up a fairly impressive array of different "Themed" sets. This means that there are many different possible styles of layout, from traditional Dungeon Crawls, Caverns, Arenas, Fortresses, and Ruins, to Sci-Fi, and Medieval Towns... And with new products in development on a pretty regular basis that list will only grow. In a nut shell that means that a lot of different types of games can be played with the same sets.

4) Uber coolness factor... In short--and as subjective as this idea may be--DF looks really awesome on the gaming table. People always react well to an attractive and functional gaming environment and DF lends a lot of class to any situation. DF is also just generic enough to allow it to fit in nicely with other 3D terrain players may already have, and the built in quality means that you will never worry about DF being the weak-link in your collection.

------------------------------------------------

I dunno', I am sure that my perspective is only partially objective because I love DF. I have been collecting Stefans work pretty much from the beginning, and I find all kinds of ways to use it in my games. Naturally then, I assume that others will "See the light" and want to use it also. That said, I feel strongly that the quality, flexibility, and diversity of set types makes DF an excellent tool for any sort of miniatures gaming skirmish or otherwise.

It was pushing believability a little, but I've actually played BattleTech in Sci-Fi once. Picture Solaris Arena, such as the Montenegro Factory fights, and you have it.
It just takes a little extra willing suspension of disbelief.
Or, if you're REALLY into BT, Caverns are good for Thunder Rift. Especially now that we have the lake, chasm, and river sets!
Mind that first step!
And of course, keeping that same set-up in mind, Lord of the Rings takes on a WHOLE NEW DIMENSION with the Chasm setups, when Gandalf slams his staff down and tells the Balrog "You, Shall, Not, PASS!" - and the chasm bridge falls down.

Get the picture?

Im-mag-in-nation, man. It's the stock in trade of DF.

As one of the people who uses it a lot for RPG (both SW and D&D) i have to say I Want to use it for the Skirimsh gmaes in either or both, but it just isn't something i see happening anytime soon. And not for lack of me having DF or wanting to do it. It's more the fact for my typical skirmish play group, they only want to play in Official tournements with prize support, and rankings. So that means you can only use the official maps etc. I have seen (pictures mind you) of people using fully 3D terrain for both the DDM and SWM skirmish games and i even made up some slight rules mods to get a better interpritation to the rules with it for SWM, but i don't have anyone to game with that way...

I am willing but no one i know is.

Tonight ;) as the New sw Mini set releases today, i was going to wait till Thursday (when a new RPG supplement comes out), but after last night i need a pick me up so bugging out of work early to get it.... But as to a Skrimish game.... The "official" release Tourney is at the Grid on the 30th, so again people will be using the "real" maps and not 3D Terrain. And that will take a lot of time so don't think i could get any other gaming in before or after..

In Theory September 20 is the next thing at the TM, but since no one has shown up in a long time i admit i haven't been haning around long...

They have "open" gaming on Sundays, but afaik the downstairs isn't booked, but also don't know if the restoration is done yet....

I use mine for roleplaying (mainly D&D and Conan) and for skirmish wargaming (WHFB and WH40K).
The only down side is that I will not 'travel' with the DF - If people want to use it, they have to come to me.

Friends were joking that we should all pitch in to buy a mobile gaming RV !!

Off to buy a Lotto ticket ;-)

GS -
I hear the game room is back in business. Give me a call or e-m me and we can set something up.

And, to get this thread back on track ...
I've used my DF for the typical D&D (RPG and minis) and Mordheim ... it's ideally suited for skirmish games. I'm going to try using DF when we play Descent next.

Besides D&D, I used to use Master Maze for our Mordheim games. That was a great skirmish level game.

Skirmish level games, eh?

Cut Stone MM:
.45 Adventures
Warhammer Quest
Vor: The Maelstrom

Cavern MM:
.45 Adventures
BattleTech
BattleTroops
Crimson Skies
Vor: The Maelstrom

Sci-Fi MM:
BattleTech
BattleTroops
Space Hulk
Vor: The Maelstrom

If I thought just a bit longer, I could probably come up with some more games I have used Master Maze for.
I have owned most of my MM for quite some time.

To a large degree, what you are seeing discussed on the forum is a bias of the users, rather than a limitation of DF products. D&D and SW are what most of the frequent posters here play.....and nt surprisingly, probably the bigger of the RPG systems out there.

To be honest, I don't play either that much as my group hates the d20 mechancs. However on saying that, we are predominantly a RPG group , so we play other systems like Savage Worlds, Shadowrun, etc whih depending on the GM we may or may not use DF.

If you want a more skirmish wargaming slant to the boards, bring the players in :) They're all a very friendly bunch round here. And the more the merrier

EDIT: The more gamers into dF, the more the company can blossom and the more goodies we get :) Although, not sure my wallet coud tolerate more releases every year :P
