Check them out:

Pretty nice, me thinks....with several new Illithids, several new Ogres (one an uncommon!), new Cyclops, new Slaadi, a new Bearded Devil and three new large dragons!

So other than the one U Ogre that looks like it's all rares, and from the number (24!) likely all the rares in the set...
Rakshasa Assassin is my fav out of the lot, largely as it looks like it could go for a humanoid catman in some other games, the two slaads are interesting as well for funky monsters...

Wow... Yeah DDM with the new look are just not my cup of tea.

On the Plus side, I like these dragons none of them look like they are going... "D'uh why does that guy have a big pointy stick..." No Dork dragons in the set :) and i do like the first Dragonborn...

Well, we've only seen a few of the minis. The paint jobs overall are slap dash basic. I do like the Web Golem (a little dark wash and drybrush could perk him up) and the Cyclops Hewer. I think the Girallon could use a touch up on the face, but otherwise is workable.

The dragon sculpts are decent, but I note that the postures strike me as very feline.

I have to agree, this batch doesn't have me as excited as the last one. There does seem to be something off, I can't put my finger on it. I really like a few of them, like the exarch of Bahamut (the Paladin, on the other hand, looks like a glumpy, ill-formed mess), the new Bearded devil (a nice change of pace from the "new version is worse than the old" trend, this one looks far superior to the previous), the Solamith (a great DoE denizen if I ever saw one!), and the Yuan-ti incanter.

But others baffle me. For one thing, someone needs to kick down the doors and give the sculptors a nice shake while screaming "Stop making Illithids with tentacles reaching out, it looks stupid!" It's the kind of thing that could work with the fine details possible in a metal figure, say from Reaper. But these glumpy, overpainted, underdetailed globs of tentacles, the new mind flayers just look TERRIBLE. That shadow flayer is a total trainwreck.

The rest feel somewhat decent, but... I don't know, other than the five or six I mentioned up top, this is not a set I'm drooling over. And since these are undoubtedly the best of the bunch, I somehow don't predict that the commons will shake me up. On the other hand, people have pointed out that for several sets now, the uncommons have been some of the best in the set, while many rares have disappointed. So maybe I'll wait to see if the uncommons change my mind.

And, to be fair, I may be SLIGHTLY harsher on this set because I am currently all Star Wars obsessed thanks to my new Falcon. So right now, I have a higher bar for DDM to impress me, since I'm not thinking about it and hence not at the same level of fanaticism I was right before AtG came out....

I think it is interesting that on another page of the same site, the Fey preview, has only one preview for a non-combatant. Does this mean that the webmaster wants more unarmed NPC's? I would like more NPC-ish characters too. Here:

www.ddmspoilers.com/fey_stats2-0.php

In many recent posts on the DF forum, people have been discussing the current craftsmanship of the DDM lines, and I would like to point out a certain figure that is great for an NPC, and.....and is well crafted. It is "Elminster of Shadowdale" from the Underdark serires. This figure has about 10 different paint colors and looks great. Very different from the current DDM trend of two tone figures and such. If you guys don't have this one, then you should pick one up. This is my figure:

I love that figure. Some day I want to put together a set of pics showing off what strike me as the best 20 or 30 DDM figures. For me, personally, I think the bulk of the line is made up of "adequate" figures, whose appeal derives chiefly from the fact that they depict some funky thing that you wouldn't see otherwise. For basic mages and fighters, it's tough to beat Reaper. But for other things, DDM frequently does a good job.

There are, however, occasional figures which really zing, and Elminster there is definitely one of them. The paint, the sculpt, the pose, it all comes together. Definitely worth remembering what that line can do at its best...

I saw the noncombatant yesterday, and i really hope it's a nice fig (and i would like about 3-4 in the uncomon or common slots over time) just to get some figs out there that can be filler scenery/set dress that i don't have to paint. The Commoner and Farmer where ok attempts but 10 guys with pigs kills it and the Commoner is just so hard to get, and is a bit beefer than i like in my poor defenseless bystander...

While the Elminster of Shadowdale is a great Fig it's also a rare, and goes from $20-30, i don't want to shell out that kind of money for what might be an NPC. I wish Reaper would make some darn non combatants, scratch that i wish they would release some figures in a timely manner.

I mean what they just annonced P-65, another new line (+chronoscope) with out any more LE. Cronsope has 20 figs showing already and it's not even 6 months old and LE is about a year and while it has more shown only has abotu 18 out, with no news on the next batch. Yeah Reapers LE is dead in the water for me, and DDM are going down hill...

Yeah, I'm starting to believe that Reaper just isn't being honest with us about LE. It's something we should expect - they're a business, after all, not friends of ours -- but it's frustrating to begin to suspect that this is a line that didn't have their full support, possibly not even their confidence, and that it just is being allowed to die, slowly. They're clearly putting efforts into other areas.

I hope it's not due to sales on that first wave -- that was botched from square 1, with poor paint, poor choice of figures, late delivery -- sales there were not accurate gauges of how they'd do if they regularly got out product that matched the quality of what came later, both in terms of paint and in terms of figure selection....

Don't get me started on Reaper's "Legendary" Encounters again !!!! Perhaps "Legendary" in the sense of a monumentally botched opportunity...

Anyway, I completely agree that the DDM figure and paint quality have suffered lately. Like all sets before them, these most recent sets do have some decent ones but, conversely, I think there are many more poor ones and fewer adequate ones over all.

Also, and this is just a personal theory and how I feel about DDM, there have been so many figures released that the "spark" just isn't there for me anymore. I have more than enough minis to handle 95% of any possible encounter (from an RPG aspect). Sure, there were poor minis when the line came out, but, back then, "poor" was better than nothing. Now, with so many in my stable, poor or not, I need to be impressed ... and, of late, I'm not. That's why I'll only buy singles any more.
