made up my mind and so i like to know about the winners and losers of this new set.

my top 5 winners are:
1. Cavebear (a very good looking bear for a bargain)
2. Young Adamantine Dragon (very good looking Dragon)
3. Huge White Dragon (looks cool and is very much appreciated)
4. Fire Giant Raider (dynamic pose)
5. Xorn Ravager (like this variant mor ethan the old one)

my top 5 losers are:
1. Blackroot Treat (goofy pose and strange look)
2. Galeb Duhr (looks like a pokemon)
3. Plaguetouched Ghoul (don't like the "plaguetouched" thing on his belly)
4. Shocktroop Devil (also goofy looking, too few detail)
5. Enormous Carrion Crawler (not really needed, a bit small for Huge)

LOL a pokemon....Roc roc......Galeb dur I choose you............... The Carrion crawler is one of my favorite old school monsters and this is one of the goofiest one's they have done so far. I don't have one of these yet and can only go by the picture. Is it ANY better in person? Also I like the White Dragon and am curious if they are doing the huge mini's with more than one activation per round in the new rules like they were going with Gargantuan and Colassal????

Picked up two boosters -- some thoughts

Got the red dragon (!) -- What I object to in this figure are his large front legs, more than his head. Sure, the mouth is curled in an odd quasi-smile, and the tilt of the head is somewhat "Pete's Dragon"-y, but I really like the wings and basic cstyle, and in general I think he's equal to the prior huge red. Neither is really all that great, IMHO, but both are servicable. Given the insanely superior McFarlane dragons, I'm surprised anyone has any tolerance at all for DDM huge dragons. All rare, all smaller, all less detailed in sculpt and paint, all more expensive.

Yuan-ti anathema -- better than I expected. Paint job is a little more nuanced, it actually looks kinda neat. It's a giant snakeman made of snakes. It's funky. I may repaint it green and black and use it for DoE purposes as well....

Roper -- The paint job needs work, but the pose is, IMHO, far superior to the previous Roper. In that figure, the tentacles were sculpted to the body, so you could fail to notice that it even HAD tentacles. This feels more accurate to me.

Galeb duhr -- I don't see the Pokemon thing. Neverending Story, yes. But that's what Galeb duhr ARE, I'd think. They're a tad silly.

Lizardfolk raider -- a fantasic sculpt job RUINED by bad paint. It's so thick even a repaint might not help. But I love the pose, the style, and the shield. Great, great concept. Just poor execution.

Orc zombie -- one of the best zombies they've ever done, I think. Usually DDM zombies are flat purple or green or something, not mottled, not rotting, just bland and flat. This one is textured more appropriately.

Deathpriest of Orcus -- WOW. This guy is superb. For an uncommon, he's got paint details better than a lot of rare figures get.

Dwarf warsword -- I'm not crazy about dwarves, and DDM dwarves I regularly dislike. They're too big and they're too monotonous. But this guy is really well executed, nice sculpt and fantasic paint.

Lurking wraith -- So. Cool. Sometimes I feel like people select out the worst figures from one set to compare to the best figures from previous sets. Case in point: the grick. The original grick was stellar, true. But it was far from representative of commons from older sets. Most of them were pretty poor. Meanwhile, people will dismiss the newer sets entirely, even when they have a gem like this guy. Absolutely fantastic concept, pose, sculpt, and paint. Just a great figure, one of the best.

The only ones I pulled which are real disappointments are the hobgoblin guard (too familiar in design, and while his outfit is well done, his face is unidentifiable mush) and the lizardfolk (which I can't bring myself to hate, though I recognize it's poorly done)

I suppose I should add that, aside from regularly repainting these things, I also rarely get full cases anymore. For awhile now I've been getting singles and just a booster or two. That means that I'll rate commons as if I only had two or three of them, not fifteen. In fact, there have probably been only seven or eight common figures in the entire run that I've wanted more than five or six of, so that's really an unfair way to evaluate them. But in this set, so far I'm pretty happy with what I've seen.

Picked up another set --

The chain golem is quite nice, though of course I'm adding some more dimension to him with the Reaper spiked chain pack.

The elf arcane archer is a good pose, but A) he's wearing acid-washed jeans, and B) he's threatening a foe with wet toilet paper. What the !#@$# is he supposed to be wielding? I figured it would be a sorta magic energy bow, which they've done before. When I was eight, and saw this on the D&D cartoon, I STILL thought it was dumb. In this case, though, they went with regular white plastic. It looks insipid. I've clipped off his wrist and replaced it with a bow-wielding fist from a GW wood elf figure. And I'll be repainting those ghastly pale blue pants.

The red dragon, btw, does have a yellow belly, not shown on the official gallery. Sadly, it don't look that good. I may repaint it bone, which looks a LOT nicer, IMHO....

I've heard folks don't like the Deathjump spider but I think the pose is fine. Maybe I'll use some ink and try to shadow him up a bit. It works great in the game you know, really can get around. Once per game it can ignore an Opportunity Attack.

In one of our games it even was able to travel over to where Strad had showed up after being beaten down and rolled a 19 thus doing the few last damage points necessary to take him down before he ran off. I'll never let him live that one down. LOL.

Hey L, have you seen the promo Chain Golem re-paint by WoTC? Apparently, its rust colored, not simply silver.

I have two on order.

Here is a picture as posted on an E-bay Auction:

Wow, that's great! I was going to make mine rust colored, as well -- seems somehow far more appropriate than silver.

What I can't decide is whether the hanging chains should be obedient to the laws of gravity, in which case they'll mostly be swinging around behind him as his forward momentum would imply (except for one on his outstretched arm, which will be mostly swung up and slightly back, to suggest the forward motion of his arm), or whether they can simply be flailing wildly, suggesting magic and chaos. The latter image is consistent with how I picture chain DEVILS, but this is a different thing. Gravity feels more appropriate, despite the magical nature of the beast. (of course, thin metal chains can be moved, so I don't technically have to make this decision, but at the same time, move them too often and they'll snap, so I do feel as though I should settle on something)

I finished repainting my Roper, and I really dig it now. More nuanced stone colors on the body, and flesh-colored tentacles, and he really works. I also re-did the more recent otyugh, in predominantly green colors, a kind of rotting vegetative look, and I'm far happier with it.

Got my box of singles yesterday, had a very brief chance to look them over. I'm still missing one or two, but I have the rest. I won't waste time reviewing each mini, but I will point out a few things that struck me about several....

The blazing skeleton is VERY nice, very three-dimensional. He really is a skeleton encased in flames, you can see him in there from any angle, it's not like the flat, 2D blazing skeleton they issued before. Part of me wants a guy like this with traditional orange flames, but I like the black and purple. It's eerie, and would work VERY well in the DOE.

The cockatrice is disturbingly well done. Well sculpted, well painted -- one of the best technical achievements of DDM yet. Shame it's on a monster I don't really care about...

Cultist of Orcus and Doresain are both really poorly done. The Deathpriest is superb, but the others.. bleagh. Somehow the uncommon deathpriest got a far more elaborate paint job and cooler sculpt than the rare Doresain....

The two dragonborn are neat ideas, poorly executed. Both are so gloppily painted that much of the detail on the sculpt is lost. The silver armor glops onto the bronze/gold skin in too many places, there was no attention paid to keeping it clean. Plus, it's very lumpy and there are no sharp, crisp lines anywhere. It's messy. A really nice sculpt and good pose for both, somewhat ruined by terrible paint. Plus, the sword the defender carries is the same flat, ugly white material that the elf arcane archer has. At least it looks like a sword instead of wet tissue paper, but it's still an odd choice. It looks like he's got a cardboard weapon. NO idea what they were going for there....

The carrion crawler, I'll give you -- LAME. He's terribly painted, and his expression is unforgiveable. I can give him a new coat of paint, bring out SOME detail. But that mouth, and those eyes... .there's very little I can do.

The white dragon is how they should have been doing huge dragons all along. THIS is a dragon. The others all rank far, far, far below. Awkward poses, odd proportions... they've never really nailed it until now.

Fire titan RAWKS. I don't see how anyone could not love this guy. Flaming hair, flaming sword. The only thing that annoys me is that they painted his legs black, and there are spots on his thighs with sculpted flames CLEARLY meant to be left unpainted. Now it looks like he's got odd tumors or pimples or something on his legs. I have to see if I can scrape it off -- if all else fails, I'll paint it myself. It won't be translucent, but at least he won't look like he's got growths on his thighs. (now that I know, I see the same problem on the model in the official gallery -- so I guess this was just a concession to the beancounters...)

Golden Wyvern initiate is another stellar uncommon. Phenomenal paint job. Great mini.

Shadow hulk.... I don't know what to say. On the one hand, I feel like I should leave him alone. He's clearly meant to be this eerie silvery blue grey color. He's different, he's unique. On the other hand... A) Umber hulks are UMBER. What don't you get?!?! B) He's so lacking in variation, he's all one color. Belly, arms, head, back, whatever, it's all exactly the same color. It's bland. I suppose I could repaint a few spots and keep the silvery blue grey theme, just make him more interesting looking. But I don't know.... I also kinda feel like if I did him in traditional brown and copper and gold, he'd be a really cool, massive umber hulk, look neat in the caverns. Not sure what to do.

The thunderblast cyclone has eyes. Didn't see that coming.

The hellwasp is worse than I imagined in my worst nightmares. I figured the bad paint job could be forgiven if it were a small or, better, a tiny mini. Like some of the imps and so forth they've done, or the stirges -- lots of swarming little wasps could be neat. I could repaint a handful, it'd be cool. But this guy is massive! He's five times bigger than I expected. AND he's ugly. AND badly painted. Not sure WHAT they were thinking. Looks like a rubber toy from a cheap toy bin at a discount toy store, where you can get rubber dinosaurs and army guys for your grandkids. Maybe it's an ironic throwback to the original source material for the rust monster. But I doubt it.

Overall I really like the set -- there's a good mix of figures I like right out of the box, figures I like the sculpt for and can repaint, and variations on monsters I already own. There are probably only a handful of "so bad I don't even want it" figures, and no more than in the past four or five sets. I'm happy with it.

Now bring on Demonweb!!!!!! :D

Does the Hellwasp remind anyone else of the old Cooties plastic figures?
