Well, I will agree that the paint on some looks bad -- but I think I ignored that because I've gotten used to repainting or at least touching up these guys for some time now. I think some of my favorite DDM figs have been ones that I've long since forgotten what they looked like straight out of the package. (it seems that at least since War Drums even the best minis have been at least one or two paint applications shy of acceptable to me -- frequently belts and pouches are unpainted, or the same color as the underlying outfit, and things like teeth or horns are unpainted, etc)

So, for example, just like the chain golem will need "rusting up," so will the red dragon need proper bone colored chestplates (with proper inkwashes), and the roper and the carrion crawler will need some inkwashing and highlighting... sure. But I think the basic sculpt on the red dragon is WAY superior to the previous Huge red, and while the Crawler is a bit cartoonish in expression, I think some browns and darker green washes on him will really fix him up nice. (plus I'm a sucker for massive wormlike insecty monsters)

Honestly, I don't get the hostility to the set in some respects. Some minis are just fantastic, I think -- the dragonborn myrmidon looks cool, the xorn, the earth titan, the angel of retribution, the Eladrin pyromancer, golden wyvern initiate, blazing skeleton, tomebound arcanist, lurking wraith, ochre jelly, elf arcane archer -- I think these are some of the best minis DDM has ever produced. Maybe the blazing skeleton could be painted a more traditional bone, but given how "magical" it is I think it's kinda neat to have it in black, sorta charred.

I also like all three dragons a lot, in terms of sculpt. I'm somewhat forgiving of paint jobs on monsters, too, because they're usually easy to fix. Paint jobs on human (and elf, dwarf, halfling) characters is VERY hard to fix, because if they've simply glopped too much on the face (and they almost always do) it's much harder, and requires a lot more skill and experience, to fix. A monster who needs a quick highlight, or a figure whose backpack or shield needs some fixing, is not that tough to do. But when a rare human mini has a glop of pink paint for a head, there's very little I can do to turn him into anything worthwhile.

I also think those hellwasps, assuming they're either small or, better yet, tiny -- they could be KEWL for swarms....

L i tend to agree with you on these figures
Eladrin pyromancer, golden wyvern initiate, blazing skeleton, tomebound arcanist, lurking wraith, elf arcane archer " like i said, i like really only the uncommons. i like these figures, the arcanist is the only rare i like out of the set, and the commons are just Bleh, add in there are 8 or 9 in a set of 48, yeah i guess they pulled mostly commons for the huges, but they (and they may have done this awhile ago as i don't really follow the D&DM) they are down to 7 and a huge from the 8 + huge. The "uncommon" Huges are really going to be Commons... i just really don't like they way they have been scewing the sets to more and more to the rares, 16 of these are Rares in the non huge, then throw in 5 of the 11/12 Huges are Rare... They are killing the product line for me.

I wonder about the size of those wasps as well

I think you are comming from the mindset of someone who "I've gotten used to repainting or at least touching up these guys for some time now, i think makes you far more forgiving. I still hate to paint, and to me it's not even the paint really that is getting me on some of these, i think arms length, table top paint jobs are all you ever need. What getting me is the lack of detail on the plastic in some of the cases cases, it just seems to be decreaseing, some are great, but it looks like if you are a common, you not only get a poor paint job, but no detial as well. Since Commons have been the bulk of any purchase (of you buy random or singles), as the Commons are the largest number of figs from a set, the lack of quality in them is very evident.

Look at the Voracious Ice Devil and the old ice devil and this one looks far less "real" and more like a cartoon, it's edges are mutted, and it just seems to lack the detail the old one had.

And i just really don't like the new Angels look at all. i Traded the ones i got from DoD2 for Commons, even trade fig for fig, they just look bad to me in general concept, i don't like the Forces of energy.

I like many of the Poses of the dragons, and they are great till you get to that face and then they go "Duh im a Dwagon" which kills it for me.

I'l lstill be getting some, maybe 1-2 boosters to get a few of the commons and a Huge or two, (and with my luck i'll get Rares UGH!) but WotC is just loosing me as a D&D customer.

Yeah, I understand complaints about the commons, but to be honest, IMHO I think the DDM line has been remarkably consistent for some time. The commons have almost always been pretty blah to me. Occasionally they've done good work there, but when I look back at the sets I've been enthusiastic for, it's nearly ALWAYS been the uncommons and rares that have had me excited. (strangely, the SW line did a great job, for a while, of producing great commons) A disappointing rare or two happens, and sometimes there have been a handful of poor uncommons. But to hear people say that a given set is bad because of all the bad commons (or to say that people are only excited for rares or uncommons, which amounts to the same thing) -- I don't feel that this is a new thing for me.

Cases in point -- and this is just the more recent sets, and just the lame commons, not the uncommons or horribly disappointing rares (which are, er, rare):

Dungeon of Dread:
deathjump spider, giant centipede, gnoll marauder, goblin picador, orc raider (UGH), trog bonecrusher (UGH),

Desert of Desolation:
black woods dryad, blood of Vol fanatic (UGH!), demonweb swarm, rot scarab swarm

Night Below:
delver sergeant, deep legionnaire, hobgoblin marshall, Greyhawk militia sergeant, guard of Mithral hall (UGH!), prisoner (UGH!)

Unhallowed - and this was one of the better sets, I thought:
duergar slayer (badly needed repainting), gravetouched ghoul (badly needed repainting), devotee of the silver flame (too thin and two-dimensional), dark talon champion (badly needed repainting). And for rares -- large astral construct is one of the worst figures the line ever produced, and I hated the ogre executioner.

So while I agree that this set has some stinkers, I don't think that makes it unique.

Of course, for people who hate the rares, the "duh" dragon expressions and so on -- well, yeah, while I don't feel that way, I can see how that'd make you not want the set. ;)

Plop down some figures from the first 5 sets right next to their counterparts (similar rarity, size & monster if possible) from the last 5 sets and what you'll see IMHO is a serious drop in quality - both paint-steps and sculpts.

I hear ya, but the Star Wars minis seem to be quite consistant over the years. Kinda strange. I think the SW sculpts and paint jobs are acceptable.

I admit it might be colored by a kind of lack of (and this is not really based on actually Playing 4th, just reading the books) intrest in 4th. I had no problem with the "new" look/feel of 3.X, but for some reason 4th is bugging me. To me it seems they have taken a step backward. I'll still be picking some of these up, but my level of purchases in DDM is going down. And it's not becuase i'm not DMing, i haven't run the past two DD games i have been in finally getting a chance to be a player, and i still bought like 5 boosters of the last set, and many singles, this one will get like 1-2 booster's and likely a set of Uncommons. It's really i think the big departure from what i know, i liked the way 3rd went, i don't like the way 4th went. 3rd's got issues but... it does seem really different from 3rd to 4th while 2nd to 3rd didn't seem that big a change.

The sad thing is i Want to like the dragons the faces are just killing them for me... I grabbed the Green and just cut the nose horn off, but many of the others can't be fixed like that for me.

SWM i think are more consistant, but there is a reason for irt, Uncle George and LFL May have a big role in that, i know from past statments of the SWM people by contract they had to have figures look a certain way. If it was a repro of something on screen it had to come up to certain minimum standards in Deco Ops (ie number of different paints) etc, why some figures got made into VR's or R's that people wondered about, it was the production that went into the figures not the stats that made it move up a rariety level.
DDM don't have an overseer like LFL, so they can do what ever they want, and i think some times it shows in the Commons.

After seeing the crappy (not good quality of pictures) pictures of the KotOR i am REALLY jazzed about the set, Some Critters, Lots of Jedi, Lots of Mando, Lots of Sith Troopers, Some Good Droids, and GUNGANS! We need some More Naboo to go with them, but Wow we might be able to do the Battle of Naboo now in Mini. (well it might have to wait till the Clone Wars to beef up the Droids some again but Woooo hoooooo Gungans!)

Ah after talking with some one, i also figured out the big reason i haven't liked any of the new DDM2.0.
The Critter monsters are lacking, While 1.0 didn't have loads of critters, they just seemed to have a few more, in in the Uncommon slots.
What do i mean by Critters, either something that is not "humanoid" in form, like a Bullete, or if it is a Humanoid in form Say owlbear or Gnoll. If it does not use tools, crafted weapons, or cloths it is a critter.

Most of the minis i have liked recently are those type, "critters"... just not stuff i am intersted in.

L,

In my case it isn't hostility to the set, but rather not much I can use is contained in it.

I have no use (ever) for dragonborn myrmidon, have a nicely painted xorn, several nice Reaper angels, no use (ever) for the Eladrin pyromancer, not sure about the golden wyvern initiate, or the tomebound arcanist, elf arcane archer.

About the only pieces in the set I'm likely to snag up are the blazing skeleton, Ice Devil and that flame bird thingy.

Maybe it's just me, but I'm not overly impressed with this set, as a whole.

I would like to get an Angel of Retribution and 2 of those Ropers. I also wouldn't mind having a nice sized swarm of those Fire-Bats, as well.

That Thunderblast Cyclone might look cool as a waterspout to be used with DF's Whirlpool Tile. I'll have to check that one out.
