So I picked up the two dragons in the Fantasy line -- both of which are vaguely familiar to anyone who's been paying attention to the Dragons line, as these sorts of poses and designs we've essentially seen before. Still, while I wasn't initially impressed, I'm pretty happy with them.

Wingard, shown here:

The pose is a bit familiar, like I said, and some people aren't going to like the sort of "bone" highlights on this guy. But I like him. The paint job, both in terms of color choice and in terms of execution, is fantastic -- lots of detail, really organic, and a great combination of red, black, and bone. The blue tongue might turn some people off, but it's easy enough to paint if you really hate it. ;) Me, I kinda like it. This guy is comparatively small, maybe six inches from floor to the tip of his wings, probably only four or five to the tip of his snout. He's still a damn formidable foe, but not ludicrously oversized (as some McF dragons would be for DF use). In general, I think he's a good purchase for someone looking for a $12-14 dragon who doesn't want to paint. Now that the older dragons are kinda hard to find, and the more recent waves were somewhat disappointing, I think it's a good thing that this guy is out there.

Meanwhile, it looks like the reports of the death of Dragons were a little overstated. The line has recently announced a Wave Nine, and there are rumors of more after that. I don't know why McF changed their minds, especially since the new Fantasy line only JUST hit stores, so it's not like they can have a good sense of how it sells yet. But we'll see....

Thanks for the mini "review" L, I will have to pick him up. Personally, I think all the MCF Dragons are an incredible value, considering the size, sculpt and decent paint job. When you compare them to the GW, Rackham and similar sized (unpainted) Dragons, they are a STEAL!!! (Although maybe not quite as detailed...)
I wasn't too crazy about series 8, but I am definately looking forward to 9.
Oh, and do you have the Hydra? I couldn't resist...He's sooooooo......BIG!!!!

Yeah, I have the Hydra -- it's not perfect, but it is really, really nice. It's just so absurdly huge, it almost DOESN'T work for DF.

I also picked up the boxed set today from the Fantasy line, King Draco. He looked insanely stupid to me in the early pics, but the actual dragon seems kinda decent. The huge purple cape appears to be optional, but we'll see -- he's not wearing it in the box, but maybe if you leave it off there will be a big hole in his back or on his shoulders or something. Maybe they just changed their minds and he doesn't come with one at all. In any case, he looks like a decent enough colossal dragon of some kind. I think if someone wanted they could drybrush some silver over him and he'd be a neat Bahamut -- he's white, and gigantic, and he's got a crown. Some pearly highlights and I think he'd work as Bahamut.

EDIT: I put him together -- no stupid purple cape! He's actually really nice, and having him hold the egg is a pretty cool touch. I like the colors and details on him, and I think his wingspan is quite majestic. Very nice figure.

Well, the news keeps on a-changin'. The latest is that all fantasy lines are cancelled -- Dragons, Blade Hunters, and Zodiac. They probably aren't going to release the stuff that's been shown for Zodiac and Blade Hunters series 2.

As for Dragons, I don't know. The line has been cancelled, but that had already been the case when they went ahead and solicited for series 9 and indicated that more were on the way. Of course, nothing has been shown, and it was still early -- so it may be the case that we've simply gone back to where we were. "Dragons" is over.

Personally, I'm fine with that. They released tons of figures, something like 50 dragon figures, and while some were stinkers, a great many were pretty freaking cool. Almost all of them work as 25-30mm scale dragons, and the ones that don't are still pretty great fantasy items for a shelf somewhere. At this point, storing them is getting more and more tricky, so without some kind of hook to make new additions stand out, more would be superfluous anyway.

I WAS kinda curious to see what they had planned, since the whole "series 9 is coming after all" thing came from nowhere -- and I'm a little surprised that they're cancelling a line that they had just recently planned to bring back from the dead. If sales were so poor, why'd they ever THINK they were strong enough to bring it back? You know?

Ah well. Maybe if Reaper's prepainted line finally gets some steam and takes off, they'll do some of THEIR dragons in prepainted plastic. Not the really huge high-end ones, but some of the $24-30 ones...
