Some more GW stuff.. 6 Years, 6 Months ago
So as people here may know, I actually do kinda like some of what GW puts out -- in the past few years, the move to more and more plastic has meant regular releases of $22-25 sets of 10 figures, all of which can be assembled in a variety of ways, meaning it's been possible to get $2.50 minis from GW that look good and can be put together with a good degree of creativity and variety.

Some of the recent sets I've finally had time to paint include the new skeletons (I posted about them before) and some of the new Chaos beasties, Bloodletters and Daemonettes. I'm really happy with these guys. The skeletons are a BIT busy -- very hard to paint, with all those flapping belts and shredded cloth -- but they look awesome. The Bloodletters make great demons, though these guys break the streak GW has been on in terms of giving you options with assembly -- these guys can really only be assembled one way. They're also a bit similar in design, meaning that in a box of 10, if you aren't actually fielding an army, you probably run out of steam after 4-5 of these guys. How many nearly identical demons do you need?

The daemonettes are stellar, though. There's less room for creative rebuilding here, though you do get your choice of claws -- there aren't many ways to pose them. The sculpts are a sort of Hellraiser-meets-Lovecraft-meets-old-school-succubi design, with McFarlane-esque asymmetry, and they look mean and angry. Probably some of the best female demons I've seen done. I've done a couple in a bloody flesh look, four of them in shades of purple and blue, and the rest in red -- and they just look NARSTY. I'm definitely going to grab another set.

In the future, check out the Photos thread for shots of these guys in the DoE -- I also want to put together a skeleton comparison thread, showcasing some of the WOTC prepainted stuff, the Reaper stuff (prepainted and otherwise), the old GW skeletons, and the newbies. There's something to be said for each, but I'm really partial to these new guys.

Now I still have to paint the new Grave Guard, but I'm not sure when I'll have time....

I went to a GW Hobby center (here in Japan) last week, and I got: Bloodletters, Citadel Woods, The mines of Mornia, and two Space wolf HQ blisters. I love the Bloodletters! They are so wicked looking. The Mines of Mornia set comes with alot of good accessories for DF too. The Citadel woods plastic terrain set is so fun too. I am gluing mine together to look kinda dead and errie. I am not using the leaves pieces from the sprue.

It was great to hear your thoughts on the new GW stuff too L. Don't hesitate to write your reviews. Very interesting to get your GW feedback.

I feel like I should add, just so it's clear I'm not some GW apologist or something -- I looked over the previews for the new Dark Elves stuff, and I'm really unimpressed. I don't know if there will be more coming out eventually, but... meh.

There are new corsairs which do seem to have cool capes, but which on the whole don't look that impressive. Could be the clumsy paint job on the promo models, I suppose, or they haven't showcased what can be done with the plastic sprues, but from what I've seen, it doesn't really look like an improvement on the current corsairs, and REALLY doesn't blow me away with coolness the way the new skeletons did, or the Wood Elf dryads did, or the daemonettes did. They're okay, I suppose. And they're the best of them.

The new hydra doesn't look that great, the new assassins don't really impress me, just about everything they've got on the website as a preview for the new Dark Elves... just feels like the first reboot in a long time which doesn't pack much of a punch for me. When they re-did the lizardmen a few years ago, I was blown away. Loved the new Bretonnians that followed. Loved the wood elves. When they did the new Empire stuff, I was never crazy about the Empire to begin with, but those empire wizards are stellar (if overpriced, esp. considering what a good deal most of the plastic sets are). When they re-did orcs and dwarves, they didn't change all that much so it was hard to notice, but I did think the new dwarf miners were cool, especially with the little pony they came with and all the mining equipment -- neat stuff for use with DF caverns. The chaos beast that followed, and then now the latest daemons, and the cool armored skeletons, all fantastic. But there really isn't a single new Dark Elf model shown that has me excited.

Ah well. Come to think of it, they re-did the High Elves in there somewhere, and I was similarly unmoved (though the lion chariot was pretty cool, and I came CLOSE to buying it... but it just doesn't work with DF, unless that arena ever comes out...)

One thing to remember about plastic minis is that they're a breeze to convert. I love GW bits for converting minis - happiness is a large bitz box.

I'll have to pick up some of the new GW demons down the line. I've seen previews of the new Dark Elf stuff - the new Cold Ones look awesome.

I had a GW relapse. I have been playing 40k 500pt skirmishes every day, and building up a chaos army. I tripped out on the Forgeworld Ogryns. Those are great, as well as the Imperial Guard Death Korps of Krieg. Some fantastic sculpts there.
